Private in-home O gauge (1:48 scale) train layout built in the style of late 1940s – early 1950s Americana. Project created as part of the team at Scale Models, Arts, & Technologies (SMARTT, Inc.) www.smarttinc.com

My girlfriend had several ideas on what she wanted for her invite. Something naturesque, possibly include her favorite color – celery green, and she wanted to do something with sunflowers. In addition, she was having a baby boy, but didn't want it to scream "baby blue" everywhere. And this is where I ended up for the invite and colors. There are three dominant colors: baby blue, sunny yellow and celery green.

As always, I had to add my own personal twist to the invite by adding some fun, cute verbiage to tie all the elements together. And this is how it goes, "Once upon a time, we were told a story about the Birds and the Bees, but this October eighteenth, we get to celebrate one of nature's acts come to life for Mira and Kapil."

Essentially everything has been completed for Yellow Duck PR in terms of logo development and corporate identity, and the initial beginnings of a Brand + Graphics Standards guideline. But it didn't stop there... a customized brochure was integrated into the bigger picture, too. Clients tend to move on from designers once they get their logo files and initial graphics started, but they forget what they have access to when working with a designer specializing in graphics.

For instance, in the Yellow Duck PR brochure below, we didn't buy any photographic images. I created all custom infographics to visually tell the story, define the inner workings of the Yellow Duck PR process, and to reflect the overall nature of the brand. In addition, I was able to work with the client's copy and restructured the verbiage so it would better be effective in each spread. Light copywriting is just one of the many services that I offer as I design any project. I am about making the whole picture and content cohesive down to the very last period in a sentence.

The coffee table wedding book was divided between two 12x12-inch books, because there was so much to visually tell. In total, there was 200+ pages, 5 chapters documenting the Indian wedding process that took place over 3 days, and a custom cover design that nods to Indian culture, but still being contemporary for our young couple.

With a little manipulation in Photoshop, sensitivity for typography, an eye for layout structure, and a few words of dedication written by me, I must say these books are another great addition to the Design With Chon portfolio of custom books.

As you look at all the other wedding decor items, the bride + groom chair signage, escort cards, favor boxes, menu, table numbers and program, etc, each of the designs have been uniquely crafted to suit their purpose, but they all work together and fit under the visual concept stemming from the original inspirational moodboard. No detail has been overlooked, and everything has a purpose.

Inspired by the Fall season. This moodboard is also influenced by Indian textiles, details and color. The two subjects just visually meshed so well together that I wanted to entwine them.

The main dominant colors are the reds & violets, and they are nicely accented by hints of purple, green, turquoise & orange. For the table details, I love the hodgepodge feel of different sized vases and materials. It gives it a more casual, family-style table setting and not so perfect & rigid. There is an overall warmth that exudes from these boards even though there is so much visually going on. Have fun with all the little details from the table numbers to other little accessories to adorn. It's all in the details!

A June wedding, I knew I wanted a sunny, intense yellow, and the blue hue of the sky to be the visual focus for my special day. Also, I wanted the day to visually summarize into these words: Classic, Rustic and simply Fun.

The traditional white, lace, and the bronze/gold hues represents Classiness. The Rustic appeal comes through with natural, outdoor elements – the twig branch, bird and grey tones. And what makes it Fun is the untraditional use of these intense, summer colors of yellow and cyan together. No pink hues here.

Macias Imports Inc is a family-owned business of Mexican dried spices and goods, and they came to me about a year ago to develop their new identity, business card and other collateral material. And recently, they came back to me to develop the face of their very first website. I was honored and excited to expand the look of their brand to the world wide web. I have only been working on the website for a month now, and it's still in concept phase as I build out and design the rest of the subpages, but at least you can get a glimpse of the progress that I have made thus far.

Like their logo and for the website, I wanted to embrace the warmth, textures and the Mexican culture while still keeping it clean and contemporary in design so the visual brand lasts over time.

On the Homepage, the main image rotates between three images so it's not so static. Between the motion of the images and the visually colorful graphics, it's simple but artfully done. The website is going to be all html, no flash, so it's easy for the user to view the website from a hand held smartphone or iPad.

The Product page is definitely the most interactive but easily maneuverable for the user. When you rollover any of the products in the main image, on the righthand side, the product information pops up.

There is still a ton more work to do to finesse all the fine details of this website project, but at least the visual concept is done and approved by the client so I can begin talking to the programmer to get this website live and active! Stay tuned on the progress of this client project.

This birthday invite design is obviously dedicated to my niece, Alina, who is turning one this June. Her mom wanted the invite to be centered around a cupcake with the #1 on top of it along with a few other elements – 2 main colors (magenta & green turquoise), polka dots, and somehow to incorporate the outdoors since the event is at a park.

This is a lot of elements for a 1-sided invite, but I think I accomplished all the necessities while still keeping a cute, girlie theme. As you can see, I went all out with the polka dots all in various sizes from the #1 candle to the bold patterned background. The main focus is on the cupcake and polka dots, and I didn't want to add too much more without over designing, or cluttering the space with another huge element to represent the outdoors. Instead, I added a cute little pink ladybug flying around the space to suggest the outdoor environment. I think that was the extra little icing on the cupcake. :)

Quite a few individuals see White space as a negative, emptiness, basically a blank canvas that needs to be filled with stuff. A creative person, on the other hand, sees and uses it as a tool to balance and enhance details. White space, when used right, is the perfect backdrop to showcase + accent good design.

White can represent a lot of things, and the qualities that I love most is its sense of purity, freshness, timelessness, and it brings about a chic factor that you can't get with any other hue.

A good trick with white is, embrace it in abundance. Say about 95% of your visual playing field is white, and in the other 5%, use one or two colors strategically in an environment, and it will make a simple, but bold visual statement.

Remember White Space can be your friend, and it can be friendly on your budget, too. For Wedding/Private Events, most reception venues always have white linens in-stock for table covers/ napkins, and it's available to you as part of your booking. Use it to your advantage, save a buck on the linens, and invest in gorgeous florals for your table that will pop off of the White backdrop of the linens. If you're looking for a dramatic mood shift for the reception, cheat the space with colored environmental lighting. And coincidentally, "White" fabric is the go-to backdrop to bounce the full spectrum of light rays.

The original design for the Fontainebleua Las Vegas Sales Center was to create small vignettes of key amenities within the hotel. Shown here is a 1:48th scale sketch model of the design.

Museum project for the cultural center involving creative direction of a student team from the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale. After the students roughed in the designs I finalized them and led a team of professionals and students to complete the project.

16' long model ship created as a buffet centerpiece for an Old World Quest themed event.

The main centerpieces for the reception tables truly reflect the theme and design of our wedding invites. I custom spray painted Manzanita branches bright yellow and accented each branch with "blue" birds that I was able to find at Michaels.

Photoshop concept rendering of a Little Havana vignette for a corporate event.
