This sustainable dining space for West Sussex County Council was completed in June 2012. Fordingbridge were comissioned to design and build this building as part of a government initiative to provide hot meals to primary school children accross the country. The building includes a kitchen space, toilet facilities and a large dining hall which can be split into two independant teaching spaces.

Features include:

• A sustainably sourced FSC accredited glu-laminated timber-frame.

• low maintanance highly insulated composite panel walls and roof. Joints are sealed for airtightness to reduce heat loss from the building.

• A natural ventilation system creates a pleasant environment with no energy demand.

• An underfloor heating system supplied by an air source heat pump. this system provides a comfortable even heat with exceptionally low energy demand.

• Argon filled triple glazed window units with low emission coating.

We understand that fast and efficient construction is paramount to a project. Our canopies and buildings are constructed using a tried and tested building system of pre engineered elements assembled on site. This minimises construction time and limits disruption to you and your project.

Fordingbridge provide a full design and build service for school buildings from classrooms to dining spaces. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Continuing this week’s Nomad theme of the ‘80s.

In 1986 I left Hackney’s employ with my health shattered. I worked with two brothers as part of three man design and build company. I was general labourer and chief designer. We worked long hours and I got physically fit again. From this period I see in my portfolio Jim Collyer’s studio. It’s a dangerous thing to work for a friend, but Jim is still my friend. Then in my portfolio I see stuff from my first spell at Haringey then drawings of proposals for St.Mary’s Hospital Laboratories (Haringey froze me out but Llewelyn Davies Weeks were happy to have me back), then Haringey head-hunted me back and sent me to work on Broadwater Farm (I don’t have any pictures, photography was not encouraged on Broadwater Farm, but I do have strong memories) and when I’d picked up some of the pieces there (Kenly window replacements, that’s another story) I was sent to sort out a troubled site in Wood Green (the building got built and now its called Sylvia Lawless House). I was made redundant in the cuts of ’91.

I think that Jim’s studio is my happiest memory from this period; the picture gives a glimpse inside.
