This year my Oregon Grape cultivar 'Charity' gave me a wonderful surprise. It produced grapes, after several years with none. I had assumed that I would enjoy it for its awesome yellow candelabra flowers alone, which cheered me up each year in the depths of winter. Surprise! This year it produced beautiful but sour grapes in abundance. :)

Anilao is a quiet barangay on the northern coast of Mabini, a peninsula-municipality that separates Balayan Bay from Batangas Bay. Yep, it’s just a barangay. But Anilao’s popularity as a good place to be prompted resorts in neighboring villages to market themselves as also part of Anilao. These days, as far as tourism is concerned, Anilao is almost synonymous to the whole Mabini municipality.
Thanks to its proximity to Manila (only 3 hours away), it has become an ideal destination for divers, especially to beginners who may be a bit hesitant to travel to the far corners of the country for a first dip. The hidden wonders it keeps in its depths are no longer secret, but they continue to amaze curious souls.

La sagesse du Chef Joseph n’a pas suffit à éviter le tragique destin de son peuple, à l’instar de bien d’autres qui connurent un sort similaire. Des blessures qui résonnent pendant des générations, tapies dans les sombres profondeurs de l’histoire humaine.
Le ciel humain n’est jamais complètement dégagé. Les clivages identitaires, nationaux, ethniques, culturels et sociaux persistent et se renouvellent sans cesse.
En plongeant mon regard dans les profondeurs fractales du Canyon, il m’a semblé que l’Histoire s’écrivait avec beaucoup de douleur, laissant de temps à autres, un peu d’espoir… sous ce ciel que nous partageons tous.

A SKY FOR ALL

The wisdom of Chief Joseph was not enough to avoid the tragic fate of his people, like many others who suffered a similar fate. Wounds that resonate for generations, lurking in the dark depths of human history.
The human sky is never completely clear. The divides of identity, nationality, ethnic, cultural and social cleavages persist and are constantly renewed.
As I gazed into the fractal depths of the Canyon, it seemed to me that History was being written with great pain, leaving every now and then a little hope ... under this sky that we all share.

When I decided to make this series of pictures I thought a lot about it. We all carry a lot of good and bad in us
and it is often the fights with yourself that make life difficult. With this series I also want to represent the duality that slumbers in each of us. Alfonso II, the last Duke of the Este family, dies and the territories of the Duchy of Ferrara pass to the Papal State. In the meantime, the Po Delta advanced northwards with branches of Tramontana, Levante and Scirocco.
The Po di Tramontana, in particular, began with its sediments to raise the depths of the lagoon towards Chioggia.

For fear that the north-eastern expansion of the Delta would bury the Venice lagoon, in the early 1600s the Po was diverted south towards the Sacca di Goro with an artificial canal which is its current bed. This intervention called "Taglio di Porto Viro", determined the beginning of the formation of the modern Delta.
The old bed became a navigable canal, the Canal Bianco-Po di Levante. If before 1600 the Delta expanded by about 53 hectares a year, from 1604 to 1840 it increased to 135 hectares a year.

A new bundle of evil bursting into life; 'twas the season!
It's part of a very noxious¹, perennial climbing weed (white bryony) which has a tuber root looking very much like a long turnip; hence its endearing French pseudonym: "Navet du diable" (Devil's turnip). How absolutely shocking! ( ツ)
¹ All parts of the plant, including the root, are highly poisonous and
as few as twelve of its berries, would be enough to kill a child.
This puts it almost on a par with the deadly nightshade where only
two to four of its berries would achieve the same result.

Die Shoshone Falls nahe der Ortschaft Twin Falls gehören zu den größten Wasserfällen im Nordwesten der Vereinigten Staaten. The Shoshone Falls near the town of Twin Falls are among the largest waterfalls in the northwestern United States. They are located on the Snake River, which rises in Yellowstone National Park and flows through Wyoming to Idaho. The water rushes over a nearly 300 m wide rock edge and falls about 65 m into the depths. The falls are sometimes referred to as the "Niagara of the West". They are about 14 m higher than this. In the autumn of 1869, gold was discovered for the first time below the Shoshone Falls. This led to a short but significant gold rush.

Guillemot /Murre - Uria aalge
The common murre or common guillemot (Uria aalge) is a large auk. It is also known as the thin-billed murre in North America. It has a circumpolar distribution, occurring in low-Arctic and boreal waters in the North Atlantic and North Pacific. It spends most of its time at sea, only coming to land to breed on rocky cliff shores or islands.
Common murres have fast direct flight but are not very agile. They are more manoeuvrable underwater, typically diving to depths of 30–60 m (98–197 ft). Depths of up to 180 m (590 ft) have been recorded.
Common murres breed in colonies at high densities. Nesting pairs may be in bodily contact with their neighbours. They make no nest; their single egg is incubated on a bare rock ledge on a cliff face. Eggs hatch after ~30 days incubation. The chick is born downy and can regulate its body temperature after 10 days. Some 20 days after hatching the chick leaves its nesting ledge and heads for the sea, unable to fly, but gliding for some distance with fluttering wings, accompanied by its male parent. Chicks are capable of diving as soon as they hit the water. The female stays at the nest site for some 14 days after the chick has left.
Both male and female common murres moult after breeding and become flightless for 1–2 months. In southern populations they occasionally return to the nest site throughout the winter. Northern populations spend the winter farther from their colonies.
Some individuals in the North Atlantic, known as "bridled guillemots", have a white ring around the eye extending back as a white line. This is not a distinct subspecies, but a polymorphism that becomes more common the farther north the birds breed.
The common murre nests in densely packed colonies (known as "loomeries"), with up to twenty pairs occupying one square metre at peak season.[citation needed] Common murres do not make nests and lay their eggs on bare rock ledges, under rocks, or the ground. They first breed at four to nine years old, but most individuals recruit into the breeding population at ages six or seven, although birds may disperse (permanently depart their natal colony) if space is limited. Annual survival probability for birds aged 6–15 is 0.895, and average lifespan is about 20 years. Breeding success increases with age up to age 9-10 to 0.7 fledglings per pair, then declines in the oldest age birds, perhaps indicating reproductive senesence.
High densities mean that birds are close contact with neighbouring breeders. Common murres perform appeasement displays more often at high densities and more often than razorbills.
Allopreening is common both between mates and between neighbours. Allopreening helps to reduce parasites, and it may also have important social functions. Frequency of allopreening a neighbour correlates well with current breeding success.
Allopreening may function as a stress-reducer; ledges with low levels of allopreening show increased levels of fighting and reduced breeding success.
Alloparenting behaviour is frequently observed. Non-breeding and failed breeders show great interest in other chicks, and will attempt to brood or feed them. This activity is more common as the chicks get older and begin to explore their ledge. There has also been a record of a pair managing to raise two chicks. Adults that have lost chicks or eggs will sometimes bring fish to the nest site and try to feed their imaginary chick.
At time of extreme food stress, the social activity of the breeding ledge can break down.
On the Isle of May colony in 2007, food availability was low. Adults spent more of their time-budget foraging for their chicks and had to leave them unattended at times. Unattended chicks were attacked by breeding neighbour which often led to their deaths. Non-breeding and failed breeders continued to show alloparental care.
In areas such as Newfoundland, the birds, along with the related thick-billed murre, are referred to as 'turrs' or 'tuirs', and are consumed. The meat is dark and quite oily, due to the birds' diet of fish. Eggs have also been harvested.
Eggers from San Francisco took almost half a million eggs a year from the Farallon Islands in the mid-19th century to feed the growing city.

This huge bowl was carved by man in the array of marble formation, born at the bottom of an ancient sea nearly two billion years ago. Its gently sloping and steep marble cliffs reach a height of 25 meters.
This is an old quarry of stone mining, which had been developed almost for three centuries. Today, it is a favorite place for lovers of historical heritage and “collectors” of natural phenomena.
The sides of the canyon are penetrated surface and underwater adits, drifts and mines. In one of the walls of the quarry there is a marble grotto – an important landmark of Ruskeala. It is possible to get to the grotto but only by water, using a boat.
The crystal clear lake is surrounded by green spruces and pines in summer, and in winter – the sparkling white snow gently covers marble, shimmering in the rays of winter sun.
The “Underground Lake”: this dip over the underground horizon was formed in 1928. It includes a set of adits, unique acoustics, a possibility to look into the depths of the marble designs.
