A focus-stacked image of the D train coming into subway station Lafayette on Broadway, NYC.

My original intention with the stack of images I took as the train passed by, was to create to a synthetic long exposure, but the result was not what I expected and not engaging. To produce the image here, I reprocessed the stack slices as a focus stack, a procedure that depends on the subject being static. The movement of the train between stack slices has resulted in strong artefacts which I find quite engaging. There's scope in this technique to explore what emerges as focus stacking software is used on other moving subjects.

Shade of grey is meaningful for the Photoshop 'Distort' tool. darker grey translates to more displacment by the 'Distort' tool and vice versa.

this depthmap has been generated by several selections i made on my 2D picture around my picture elements.

this depthmap has been used for creating my Alien conversion.

One of the interactive demos at the International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 2013. The laptop has an infrared time-of-fligh depth camera, and is using a greyscale image of the scene to refine the depth image in real time. Cool.

I've been learning how to make 3D from 2D pictures.

This is an anaglyph of the cone - when viewed you should see the cone receding behind the white background.

Playing with Depth Maps

When we shopped at our local Kroger today, they had Sparkling Ice (flavored sparkling water drinks ) on sale for $0.88 each. So we each got one flavor to try. I got an Orange Mango and my wife got a Cherry Limeade. They're refreshing and delicious. We'll try some other flavors next time.

I love anaglyphs, so I decided to make the spiral tunnel into one. (Required red/cyan glasses)

This year I switched phone carriers. I moved from AT&T wireless to mint mobile (they ran an offer of 3 months of unlimited service for $45). Well, I get the mail today and I received a Holiday card and mock-tail recipe from Ryan Reynolds & mint mobile! What a swell guy and phone carrier. 😊

Ryan Reynolds here with my annual holiday card for Mint Mobile. Hope you're ready for a little refreshMINT this holiday season, because we are officially tuning the Mint Mojito Mocktail into this year's must-have holiday beverage. Because no reasonable person likes eggnog.

Start by dropping some Mint in a glass, give 'em a light mash-

Think gentle but firm, like mashing a stress ball during your family's holiday gathering

Add lime juice, a pinch of sugar, your club soda of choice, stir it up, loss in ice, and top off with more soda. Garnish with Mint and cranberries, sip, and impress your in-laws with your refreshment skills.

So this guy rides out to the point for everyone to get their photos. So everyone thinks "Aw isn't that cool". So the guy rides back and requests a tip. Enterprising!

[Update] Did some research on Unicorns and decided to change the caption

"The unicorn, through its intemperance and not knowing how to control itself,

for the love it bears to fair maidens forgets its ferocity and wildness;

and laying aside all fear it will go up to a seated damsel and

go to sleep in her lap, and thus the hunters take it." - Leonardo Da Vinci

An investigation into depth maps

As requested, here is the depth map for the golf ball.

Unlike the sneaker picture, where I used 0 to 128 gray values, this picture I used all 256.

-- The golf ball was cut out and placed on a separate layer, and the radial gradient goes well over the ball ~ I do this because several 2D to 3D enthusiasts explained how each main item in the photo's depth area must extend past the object to ensure proper displacement.
