It's amazing how birds can look different in size or age, depending on the pose...I'd consider this one as looking more like a 'kittenbird' than a catbird....LOL

I don’t exactly remember the circumstances that led to this happening, but alas, another rare daylight run of the FEC rock-runners documented for the books. Such moves are hard to plan for on a whim, let alone predict, but are massively appealing to photograph when given the opportunity. Finding FEC SD40’s in service on the mainline in daylight is difficult to accomplish. Even with the complexities of shooting unplanned train moves, Little River is one of the ‘safe’ plays for me, a location I’d fall back on for this occasion—and it certainly won’t be the last time.
Led by sister ‘40’s #FEC720 [SD40-2] and #FEC711 [SD40-2], a late-running FEC 193-08 heads south through the cluttered mess that Little River on the morning of December 8th, 2023, rounding the curve past the neighborhood’s namesake body of water towards the Little River wye. The two Champion units have 121 cars on the drawbar, 119 of them being empty limestone gondolas/hoppers, and two articulated TOFC spine cars for the railroads’ then-new Waste Management service on the bottom [said WM traffic now has its own dedicated train at the time of posting].
Typically operating under the cover of night, Train 193 handles empty limestone traffic out of Fort Pierce to Medley Monday through Friday as the southbound counterpart to Train 292, which handles the northbound loads out of Medley. Motive power for the service cycles every week, and greatly varies depending on what’s available.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. In this case they are for a friend, who like me, elects blue as her favourite colour.
Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the butterflies which are 10mm, and the central butterfly which is 12mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flowers and stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.
These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.
It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

I headed out to the Wellington South Coast in New Zealand late last week hoping to capture probably my last image of the galactic centre of the Milky Way for this year. After this week the moon will begin to get brighter and the galactic centre will disappear below the horizon until February 2016. It quite an amazing sight to see this time of year as about an hour after sunset, you can see the Milky Way sitting parallel to the horizon. It position does vary quite a lot depending on where you are in the world, but in New Zealand at the moment, we have front row seats to one of the best shows in the universe.

When a butterfly hovers in the air, its wings typically beat at a rate of about 5 to 20 beats per second (Hz), depending on the species. Smaller butterflies tend to have faster wingbeats, while larger species have slower wingbeats.

The castle or fortress is linked to the Mendoza family, from which the town became dependent in the fourteenth century. The construction that has survived to this day dates from that century or the next, when it became the residence of the Marquis of Santillana and his family, future dukes of the Infantado. It was the home of Queen Juana of Portugal and her daughter Juana la Beltraneja, who aspired to the throne of Castilla-León (on which the dramatized visits are, by the way). It has also welcomed kings invited by the Mendoza, as John II or Philip III.

Landing in San Diego is difficult. SAN is listed as one of the worlds 10 most extreme / difficult airports to land at (depending on which list you find).
You have to fly over this hill (Balboa Park), then get the plane down before you run into the next hill (Point Loma).or before you run off the end of the short runway. So the runway is in this sort of valley, and it can be VERY difficult for pilots at times. It is a very difficult approach because of the steep angle required over the hill. There are no jumbo jets regularly flying in here like at other major airports ie LAX, JFK, DFW.
I love flying aircraft, I love aviation, so therefore, I posted this video. It is really amazing and incredible to get this kind of footage of a plane landing in San Diego.
I previously wrote about how exactly I got this video including some of the difficulty involved. But I decided to be more discreet, to edit out that part, to leave you guessing.
You can imagine the 'powers that be' discourage a lot of looky-loo's from hanging around the approach end of runways.
I suppose a fascination with the machines of transportation has long been a human thing. I remember when I was a kid, I would take my younger brothers by bicycle to the local Hicksville train station to see the mighty train engines up close. That was a regular part of our Sunday routine. First stop was church, then afterwards to the train station, last stop was Baskin-Robins for ice cream.
Church and ice cream make sense. But the train station? Why did we go there? I remember so vividly for some reason the elevated platforms of the Hicksville train station. For some reason it was just an interesting place to hang around for a kid.
I'd say it's about fascination with the machines of transportation.
Trains and Planes. Big fancy machines that move people from point A to point B. But fascinating for some reason in how they do it.
So fascinating I suppose, that I even managed to make a career out of the business. And what form of human transport could be more fascinating that a flight in a hot air balloon? Going only where the wind carries you? No steering, just riding with the wind! What a concept.
So to tie it all together, landing a balloon is difficult, extreme, and fascinating. And it all started out because my father made me take my brothers to church, and for entertainment afterwards we would go check out the trains. Go figure. Like this could really all be tied together, but perhaps.
I did not really have a key point to make with all this. It is just a sort essay on my thoughts as to why I got this video of the plane landing. I hope someone reads this and enjoys it. Maybe I'll get my brothers / sister / mom to read this since they come here sometimes, they might appreciate the references to life growing up and the Hicksville train station
Buds are forming now, this one will bloom early May. I love to watch the Rhododendron buds in Fall and Winter, they are so promising of color and seem example of vigor.
When I first came to Portland, Oregon it was end of December, early January and I was seeing so many Rhododendrons everywhere, I was amazed especially watching the buds, and they did not fail to enchant once they started blooming.
This one is red and beautiful, got some damage during hot Summers the last several years but coming back beautifully.
I have Four different ones, one has never done very well where tt is planted, and I have a really large pink one, and a semi large lavender one. Depending on the type, like Camellias they can be blooming all through the year.
So, I have photo number one and photo number two, I could not decide which one I like more, which one do you like more :)
please see large :)

Depending upon the lighting - especially in very bright sun which really does make out the yellows, yellow, normally the Rock Wren is going to be gray or gray-brown or gray. Then, the trick is composition or color of the entrance to the nest. I Went through all archives, and found one gray, but none with rock formation entrances.
That leaves three remarkable features. First, the Rock Wren is not known to drink water, but instead gets all the water it needs from its food. That means that there is little competition between the Cactus and Rock Wren during droughts which comes in very handy considering its habitat, and it's competition. (Btw, the cactus Wren is almost identical in color, the latter being almost all gray except for a little brown on the tail.)
The African leopard exhibits great variation in coat color, depending on location and habitat. Coat colour varies from pale yellow to deep gold or tawny, and sometimes black, and is patterned with black rosettes while the head, lower limbs and belly are spotted with solid black. Male leopards are larger, averaging 60 kg (130 lb) with 91 kg (201 lb) being the maximum weight attained by a male. Females weigh about 35 to 40 kg (77 to 88 lb) on average.[citation needed]
The African leopard is sexually dimorphic; males are larger and heavier than females. Between 1996 and 2000, 11 adult leopards were radio-collared on Namibian farmlands. Males weighed 37.5 to 52.3 kg (83 to 115 lb) only, and females 24 to 33.5 kg (53 to 74 lb).The heaviest known leopard weighed about 96 kg (212 lb), and was recorded in South West Africa.
According to Alfred Edward Pease, black leopards in North Africa were similar in size to lions. An Algerian leopard killed in 1913 was reported to have measured approximately 8 ft 10 in (2.69 m), before being skinned.
Leopards inhabiting the mountains of the Cape Provinces appear smaller and less heavy than leopards further north. Leopards in Somalia and Ethiopia are also said to be smaller.
The skull of a West African leopard specimen measured 28.6 cm (11.25 in) in basal length, and 18.10 cm (7.125 in) in breadth, and weighed 790 g (1 lb 12 oz). To compare, that of an Indian leopard measured 28 cm (11.2 in) in basal length, and 20 cm (7.9 in) in breadth, and weighed 1,000 g (2 lb 4 oz)
Some love it. Some hate it. Los Angeles, or more poetically called the City of Angels, is the largest city in the state of California, and the second largest city in the USA. The city has population of nearly 4 million while the greater Los Angeles, depending on the source, is home to 12 - 18 million people. LA is a very diverse city with large population of Hispanics/Latinos, African Americans, Whites, Asians, and other communities including American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and other Pacific Islanders. The city is also known for its freeway network with horrendous traffic jams and smog, Hollywood, and the beaches. In LA, you don’t ask “how far it is” but rather “how long it will take you” to get there.
Depending on your definitions, I was either walking or hiking down a steep slope on South Sunset Bench Road when I decided to take a short break to take this photo, and a couple of sister photos pretty much just like it.
The capture shows, in almost 3-D form, the foreground, with a few snow remnants scattered amongst some ponderosa pines, a good deal of sagebrush, the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana, and the iconic Bitterroot Mountains in the distance. Throw in a fairly fabulous post-sunset sky and you have the makings of a delightfully handsome scene.
Mother Nature produced it. I took a short break from my exercise to record it, and then continued on my merry way back down "the bench", Montana's name for an elevated plateau that is located before foothills or mountains are encountered, or the mountains themselves.
This view is one very sweet one among many that are near my home, higher up on Sunset Bench Road, and walking or hiking this rural road in either direction is a great pleasure, something I do multiple times a week. Up. Down. Both. Never uphill both ways.
Every day and every season offers up a totally new sky and a vibrant new scene, different and unique, each one. The same as the favorite view-field in your neighborhood. And therein lies the magic.
So. The difference between a walk and a hike? The length.
The degree of exertion. The use of a hiking pole. The path or the surface. The location or the local environment. Whether or not one sweats during the activity. But the pleasure and the benefit is the same, no matter the name. Especially in delightfully beautiful places.
. . . or Styx (depending on what you see). After having spent all day working on some banner graphics I was only too glad to get out this evening with my camera. The light was fading fast, which was handy for a longer exposure. It's maybe a bit chocolate-boxy but I quite like the serenity.
SN/NC: Mussaenda Erythrophylla Var. Hybrid C, M. Philippica, Rubiaceae Family
Mussaendas belong to the Rubiacea family which also includes the Gardenia, Ixora, Pentas and coffee plants (Coffea arabica). This red one is not the most common, usually they are coral or pale rose. This shrub is sometimes referred to as "Bangkok Rose". It produces a showy display in shades of white, pink, salmon to red, depending on the variety. While the the bushes are not so attractive in winter (when they can lose their leaves if cold enough) they are a valuable addition to a tropical or subtropical garden for their showy display over an extended period in the warm months.
Ela pertence à mesma família do café, a rubiácea.

Given the recent dependance on LDP Class, it was unusual to see 7MB7 QRNational Melbourne to Brisbane freight passing Glenlee with the combination of G534, G516, X54 and LDP001. X54 has recently been seen in Sydney working the Yennora to Glenlee trip trains.
Due to recent restrictions on the use of modern LDP and SCT class with older locomotives, RailCorp restricts the use of LDP class to operating only with other LDP Class, hence why it was dead attached. X54 would have been on the train to assist with the load, as it was the longest QRNational train I've seen in a while.
