Graphic shows the cathode ray tube set-up of J.J. Thomson’s experiment in which he showed that the unit that carried charge could be deflected by electric and magnetic fields, providing a measure of its mass.

In 1897, J.J. Thomson subjected cathode rays (produced in a cathode ray tube) to electric and magnetic fields. By analyzing the response to those fields, Thomson showed that whatever carried the charge had a specific mass, no matter the element used in the tube. He deduced that cathode rays consisted of small electrically charged particles that he called corpuscles, now known as electrons.

ALL INDIA STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION (AISA) .

01 .08.2002 .

Prevent SFI-ABVP from derailing the genuine social concerns and issues 1 .

. After the winter semester hibernati'on by SFI-ABVP, they have got on to their annual orchestra -so predictable you can hear the elections ringing. .

f7ven a~ this hi.gh pitched drama is being enacted there is a systematic attempt by ABVP-SFI to deflect and deratl genume soc1al concerns and real campus issues of students. Let us look at them one by one. . The hue and cry. abou! dress-c?de i~ Ravindra Bharti University and its support by the local SFI umt there needs some dissection espec1ally w1th ABVP's farcical opposition to it, here in JNU. .

The repo~s are clear, the VC of Ravindra Bharti University (RBU) Shubankar Chakraborty has imposed dress codes on g1rl students wherever he has gone. Earlier, as Principal of Ashutosh College he prescribed saree for.girls. a~d.after assumpti.?n of VCship of RBU, he gave statements against "girls and boys interacting and sharmg t1ffms followed by saree for pottery classes". However the dress code imposition is not the aberrant working of a conservative individual. In Ashutosh College, when a radical left student organisation. (AIDSO) had raised the matter SFI goons had beaten them up. And now SFI unit in RBU has flexed its muscle again to impose dress code on girls. It is also to be noted that Shbuankar Chakraborty has CPM patronage and has been their political mascot-he was fielded as their candidate against Mamta Bane~ee in the elections. .

ABVP's pamphlet (31 .7.2002) asking for rejection of dress code in Bengal is farcical. ABVP, the agents .

of Hindutva Taliban , in the country have imposed dress codes for women in Lucknow, Kanpur, Baroda, Bareily and even in Aurobindo College of Delhi University and it is part of their politics of controlling women. In JNU for fear of student anger they may not dare impose a dress code but where students are less mobilized they would assume the Taliban's role. Students however need note that SFI's dubious role in RBU has only gone on to consolidate the rightist mind set within society and placed it on par with the anti-women ABVP. And this surrender of left legacy has become the rule rather than an exception for SF I. .

Coming to the issues of the campus things have turned from bad to worse and the high drama between SFI-ABVP is trying to derail these issues. .

Seat Cuts : It was evident from last semester that there would be massive seat cuts. The admission result have amply proved that a large number of students have not got into research because of this cut down. Seat cut is an underhand method of privatization as student intake is reduced instead of increasing the faculty members. This gradually leads to the marginalisation of students from deprived and socially oppressed backgrounds. The SFI led JNUSU instead of taking up the matter through mobilizations went off .

to sleep after a sketchy notice. .

Mahi-Mandavi's tales of woe : The residents of Mahi-Mandavi have borne the callousness of the administration. Water shortage, stale food, private mess and no basic amenities-classical symptoms of neglect-that first step which paves the path to privatization. Yet it goes to the credit of its residents that they fought back each time -even the JNUSU had to concede to this struggling spirit not because of any appreciation but because of its own incompetence in handling each of these issues. .

+ No Buses therefore no bus pass counte.r : Students are waiting endlessly at bus stops for the last 2 months. Route No. 621 has stopped plying within the campus and since the beginning of July the Bus Pass Counter has also shut shop. The SFI led JNUSU has responded to this with a stony silence. If should be noted that the X-Pian for JNU had spoken of private transport services within campus. The union probably is helping in bringing this about. The agitation against X-Pian has been scuttled after the s~.ameful and suspicious withdrawal of the sit-in demonstration at VC's office by SFI. They are probably wa1tmg to throw .

in a symbolic protest a few weeks before elections I . . .

Are Reservations and Deprivation quotas being fulfilled? This is the review year of the Adm1ss1on .

Policy and it is still not clear if JNU is allowing in people from the ~eprived ~n_d traditionally oppres~ed backgrounds. In 1999 when the last review had to done, ABVP true to ~t~ Brahm1mcal outlook stood agamst a just and progressive admission policy while SFI manipulated and pohttcked shamelessly and scuttled any review from taking place. The students have to watch out against both these organisations and ensure that JNU provides justice and educational opportunities for the marginalized sections of society. .

AISA demands that JNUSU -1) Bring out a complete break-up of admissions (with reservations and deprivation points mentioned) as the first step towards a Review of the Admission Policy. 2) Presents a systematic solution for the problems of Mahi-Mandavi. .

3) Pr~sents the struggle plan against JNU's X-Pian. . . .

4) Immediately pursues action for reopening the bus pass counter w1thm the campus. .
