El 3 de Mayo de 1589,una poderosa armada inglesa,con 20.000 soldados a bordo y al mando de Sir Francis Drake, corsario de la marina británica, asedió A Coruña como castigo por su apoyo a la Armada Invencible, enviada un año antes por el Rey español contra Inglaterra.
Tras largos días de lucha feroz y fuego intenso, la población se refugia y ofrece resistencia tras los muros de la Ciudad Vieja. Mujeres y niños colaboran tanto como hombres, utilizando cualquier objeto para cerrar los boquetes y resistir, pero el enemigo consigue finalmente abrir una gran brecha de acceso en la muralla.
Es entonces cuando María Pita derriba y mata al alférez inglés arrebatándole su bandera. Se dice que este hecho se llevó a cabo al grito de "quien tenga honra, que me siga", lo que desmoralizó a la tropa inglesa y provocó la retirada, de, nada más y nada menos, 20.000 ingleses. Una vez acabada la batalla, ayudó a recoger los cadáveres y a cuidar a los heridos. Junto con María Pita, otras mujeres de A Coruña ayudaron a defender la ciudad; una de ellas fue Inés de Ben, que fue herida por dos balas inglesas en la batalla.
A la vista de esta heroicidad, los ánimos abatidos de los coruñeses se transforman, lanzándose sobre los enemigos que emprenden precipitadamente la huida,circunstancia que no fué muy bien recibida por la Reina de Inglaterra que,a partir de ese momento,empezó a distanciarse de uno de sus corsarios preferidos.
Estuvo casada tres veces y al enviudar de su último marido,el Rey Felipe II le concedió una pensión que equivalía al sueldo de un alférez más cinco escudos mensuales y le concedió un permiso para la exportación de mulas de España a Portugal.
En este monumento a su recuerdo,instalado delante del Concello coruñés y en la plaza que lleva su mismo nombre,el autor quiso reflejar su gesta poniendo a sus pies al alférez inglés a quien Maria Pita le arrebató la bandera que portaba.

Stow Maries Aerodrome was established in 1916 two years after the Great War began as the base for No 37 (Home Defence) Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. The Squadron’s role was to defend the nation against Zeppelin raids. This Timeline Sunset and Night Shoot Event took place on 22nd April 2017 and included a Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a replica F235, BE2e, Sopwith Snipe and the recently arrived Nieuport 17.
I look at my mission on the hologram that I have in my helmet, "Move your way through the wreckage and try to round up as many survivors as you can."
What survivors? The bombs were supposed to be non-lethal, apparently they were not.
The most I can find of a survivor is a slowly cooling skeleton.

In this particular shot, a muscovy duck tries to defend her ducklings from from an attacking red shouldered hawk. (In the spirit of the season, I will not divulge how this ended)

M49 JRY : Land Rover Defender 110-inch Armoured Police Hard Top.
As part of Government policy in the early 1990s, each Police Force was required to have at least one armoured vehicle in case of riots.
This Land Rover was the vehicle chosen by the Leicestershire Police Force - acquired new and not a 'hand-me-down' from somewhere else.
Having had virtually no use for many years - usually only being moved for its annual service - it has been 'adopted' by their Rural Policing Team to give them an off-road capability.

HMS Defender (D36) Launched in December 2009, HMS Defender is the fifth of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 destroyers. Together with her sister vessels, Defender is one of the most advanced warships ever constructed.
Last week Ed Diment and I built this Land Rover Defender, for an exhibition at the National Railway museum. The vehicle is based on my own series II Land Rover. Because it is part of a series of emergency vehicles, it wears the markings of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
Coincidentally, it's also a nice match for #10 in this month's LUGNuts challenge, 'order by numbers', a vehicle to handle any extreme terrain. After all, Land Rovers are 'the best four-by-four by far.
