The Fort is built between 1859 and 1865 to defence the city of antwerpen. During the first world war the fort is used to store over a milion gas masks for the civilian in Belgium. Now a day's a part of the masks are still there.

A lot of the buildings are destroyed by fires.

There are various WW2 defence structures on the eastern and south-eastern faces of Mersea Island, on the Essex coast to the south of Clacton-on-Sea.

In addition to three pretty much intact pillboxes, there are also a further four structures - what's left of them! - along the beach, which consisted of gun emplacements and searchlight mountings.

This is the third one you come to, going westwards, and is the only one to still have stairs that would have once led down to it: there's so little left of it that there are few clues as to its former role

There is no rock anthem (or Shingle Jingle) accompaniment to the slow descent of the large dark rocks down to the sea. Rolling on loose shingle and propelled by the force of the tides the defensive structure is lump by lump then buried in the wet sand. You can see the tops of some partially buried rocks in the upper LH side of the image.
