The Type 95 Radar is a good example of a small transportable Radar. It is a development of the American AN/UPS1 Radar which was first developed in the late 1960's and was introduced into RAF service following trials in 1967. Due to reliability with the AN/UPS1 Radar, Marconi produced an upgraded version, the S259 which entered service with the RAF as the Type 95 Radar in the early 1970's.

Designed as a fully transportable modular Radar, the Type 95 was a significant advance on radars such as the Type 14 Radar, it was designed to replace as a mobile unit. Very soon the new Type 95 Radars, along with the older AN/UPS1 Radars, were being used by 1 ACC (No. 1 Air Control Centre) then based at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk. 1 ACC are the organisation in the RAF responsible for deployed mobile Radar units where ever they are operated in the world.

In addition to the Radars being used in exercises, both in the UK and abroad, numerous operational deployments took place. Type 95 Radars were routinely put to good use as gap-fillers, standing in for main Radars at permanent Air Defence Radar sites along the East Coast of Britain, also Malta and Cyprus when their Radars are undergoing maintenance. RAF Saxa Vord, in the Shetland Islands has one on ''permanent loan'' as it was simply not cost affective to keep on moving it between the UK mainland and the Shetland Islands given the location of that particular base.

Just as they were reaching the end of their useful lives, the Type 95 Radars were to see a new lease of life due to the Falklands crisis in 1982. The outbreak of hostilities saw the Radars rapidly being made available for shipping to the Falkland Islands as part of the preparation to re-establish the British Air Defence network once the Islands were recaptured from the Argentinean forces. By the summer of 1983, a Type 95 was at Ajax Bay, overlooking San Carlos Water with further Radars located at locations such as Byron Heights and Mount Alice. The Type 95's were finally replaced by AR3D Radars though several remained on the Islands as reserves until the early 1990's.

The Type 95 Radar at the RAF Defence Radar Museum illustrates the compact nature of such mobile Radar systems which were meant to be self contained. In practice, such Radars form part of quite a complex site as a lot of other equipment is needed to enable to enable the site to operate. Many of those who served in the Falklands in the 1980's recall sprawling bases with generator, store, messes, accommodation etc - all being subjected to wind, rain, mud and snow. Life at the deployed Radar stations was far from pleasant and most RAF personnel were glad to leave them after their 4 month tour of duty !

The Ferry Inn at Wilford, has, for years been consistently, the "Worst Pub in The World in the Nicest Spot". The management should be dragged to Market Square through the Meadows and then force fed their "food" (which never turn up because their wouldn't be enough staff) whilst sitting under their heated umbrellas. Wish their was another pub nearby.
