Weekend visit to the site to check progress.

Most of the sheet piles were by now driven into place.

Work now involved reinforcing the base of the sheet wall.

Throughout the days, it's been a constant 2-way stream of Volvo trucks -- some bringing varying grades of hardcore down to the riverside to build up the rear of the steel wall - other times it was to remove previously laid boulders, as part of temporary access shelf on the outside of the steel wall.

Checked out the condition of site on the opposite Slang/Rehill side of the river.

Round 6 of the CHNL saw a depleted Hepburn take on Creswick. For the 2nd week in a row the Burra’s were forced to line up with 2 players out injured. Confident in their squad, the competition leaders tried various line ups throughout the game until they quickly settled. Captain Libby Purtell at Goal Attack was instrumental in providing Hepburn with plenty of options in attack. Purtell maintained her 100% accuracy throughout the first half and was supported brilliantly by sharp shooter Jane Lienhop at Goal Shooter.

Creswick managed to keep the mid-court battle alive by providing sharp drives to the circle; however the Burra’s defensive pressure in the circle from Ebony Place saw the ball turned over time and time again. The junior of Hepburn’s team,18 year old Tara Ford clocked up her 150th game for the club in great style at Goal Defence. Ford seems to be taking every opportunity in seniors to develop her game with the help of Place at Goal Keeper. However it was wing attack Brydie Taig that stood up to the challenge and lifted the Burra’s confidence. Taig was named Hepburn’s best on court thanks to her speed and sharp feeding into the circle. Hepburn ran out winners 53 to 17.

The Mo Shepherd award went to Hannah Cameron-Taylor and Libby Purtell for outstanding work.

Hepburn’s reserves were also focussed on keeping their unbeaten run to the finals alive. The Burras got off to a shaky start as they tried to adjust to Creswick’s style. Moving Janee Brown into Centre in the second quarter was all it took to lift the Burras confidence and provide a 24 to 9 lead at half time.

Courtney Wetzel at Goal Defence, Kristi Pedretti at Goal Keeper and Caitlan Ryan at Wing Defence stepped up in the second half and kept Creswick scoreless until the final minutes of the game. Wetzel provided one of her best games of netball this year getting her hands on ever pass that came her way. Final scores Hepburn 53 to 13.

Two OK shots from tonight - went down with high hopes for a nice sunset, which more or less came right, but the sea was very far out, so didnt get the water movement I had hoped for. Directionally the sunset isnt ideal at the moment for getting full lighting conditions and the defences, so have kind of got half a sunset in each picture.

Lower Dodder Flood Defence Works

Ringsend Bridge to New Bridge

All flood alleviation works are complete downstream of New Bridge. This work has entailed the placement of 665m of sheetpiles, the building of 1130m of reinforced concrete floodwalls and the construction of 130m of flood retaining earth embankment. The sheetpiles have mainly been placed to prevent a flow path for flood waters under the flood retaining structures to low lying estates such as Derrynane Gardens and O’Connell Gardens. Works at the Aviva Stadium were carried out in conjunction with the Lansdowne Stadium Development Company. These works now afford protection to the National Standard of a combined 1:200 year coastal and fluvial event for inter-tidal areas, and makes allowance for global warming to the year 2100.

Utility services, such as the 500mm County Sewer main have been re-laid to facilitate this work. This scheme also facilitated the upgrading of the footpaths along the banks of the river and the associated public lighting. Viewing platforms and benches have been placed by Lansdowne Lawn Tennis Club to enhance the river way for residents. Environmental mitigation measures such as the provision of fish holes in the river bed (on consultation with Inland Fisheries Ireland), the elimination of invasive plant species, the provision of an artificial otter holt and replanting of riverine habitat have also taken place.

Lansdowne Railway Bridge to New Bridge

Flood alleviation works are now substantially complete along this section of the river. 335m of floodwall have been constructed as part of this work as well as 25m of flood retaining earth embankment. As in the previous section of works, improvements for pedestrians have been made to the river footpath by Marian College and the public lighting upgraded. Invasive species have been eliminated and replanting with native species is taking place. An area of land downstream of 79 Lansdowne Road will be left for wildlife.

There is a noticeable drop-off in the level of activity on this site now.

There's still some finishing touches to the river bed itself, cosmetic work along the riverbank sides, and a jig-saw pattern of large boulders placed in mid-stream.

The main (final) focus will be on completing the profiles to the sheet-steel wall, securing the structure with poured concrete, and then the completion with the pre-fabricated stone capping.

The majority of operatives who attended through the summer months have since moved on to other sites/tasks.

And we can see a slow repatriation of heavy-duty equipment back to base.

The guys are attached steel frames to the recess of the sheet-steel uprights, prior to filling with concrete.

There's still a surprising amount of intricate manual work involved in completing tasks -- machines can only do so much!

Said it before, and I'll say it again . . . . .

The trucks have (again) departed. No red convoys removing soil. For now.

I call it the 'Biggest Sandpit/Playarea' in Wicklow, in Leinster, in Ireland.

The place is a mess. Aesthetically, the uneven flow to the ridges and terraces annoys me.

Israeli Troops Conduct Anti-Terror Training Exercise

Israeli soldiers from a Counter terrorism unit take part in a drill simulating a terrorists attack on a school in the early morning of October 5, 2011 in Kiryat Uno, Israel. The Israel Navy have recently introduced anti-terror technology including simulator called the ''Bridge'' which comprises of 20 plasma screens and will commandos, navel and marines to counter terror threats more easily.

Ahmed is a lawyer from Aleppo in Syria. Before the conflict began, he had hoped to hand over his practice to his son so that he could retire. ‘I had a legal office,’ [in Syria] he told us. ‘When the fighting started in 2011, we stopped working. I arrived in Iraq in March. Now I feel like a refugee - like any other refugee. It's a feeling of loss and pain.’

Sunday 9th perfect day - Essaouira

Last day, and an arranged one. Bus picked us up at 6.45 for a 3 hr. drive to Essaouira!

3 stops on the way. Comfort stop, we walked up the road to take photos, stop to see goats climbing Argan trees, and an Argan oil women's co-op. We bought some expensive oil to work on my wrinkles and get rid some excess dirhams.

Passed through some lovely countryside as we climbed the hills from the coast and down valleys to the other side.

Essaouira is an attractive town with a defensive wall and a CLEAN fish port using mostly Small open fishing boats. Some huge waves were breaking over rocks and small islands just off the seafront.

Guided by our annoying Arab guide, we visited the fish port, walked along ancient streets by the wall and up to the ramparts. Looked inside a typical small Riad and stopped at a restaurant for lunch.

Roger ordered steak; Our meal took nearly 1 hr. to come; time that would have been much better spent looking round on our own.

A lovely town to come back to and have more of our own time.

Returned for dinner and enough time to pack

Hard to believe - but I've been recording this project now for 5 years.

Most of the main civil engineering works have ceased along the Slang/Rehills section of the river bank.

However, the soil-shifters are at it again.

Smaller operation than before, but a steady process of removing soil, shifting soil and reshaping the banks.

You don't have to be a certified civil engineer to figure out that there are quicker and more efficient ways to move the soil.

Using one excavator, a few dumper-trucks and a single bulldozer is a process not driven by time/cost.

If you 'really' had to complete this work quickly, you'd line up a few 'bigboy' bulldozers . . . . . and shift the soil in days, rather than weeks-months.

This 'hurdler on the ditch' simply comments on the piecemeal nature of this planning!

Maybe they're eavesdropping . . . but, suddenly, man-mountains disappear, and level expanses appear.

IDF Desert Reconnaissance Battalion at the Urban Warfare Center

Last week, the Desert Reconnaissance Battalion conducted a drill in the Urban Warfare Training Center, simulating fighting in populated cities. The drill was conducted to assure maximum efficiency while fighting in urban centers by focusing solely on hostile targets.

The Desert Reconnaissance Battalion, also known as "the natural detectives" is comprised almost entirely of Bedouins whom, though exempt from service, volunteered to serve in the IDF. These soldiers use their unique abilities to track down infiltrators and other threats in the vast Israeli desert. April 2, 2012

The guys were now working to reinforce the riverside of the sheetpiling, buttressing with large boulders, and an overlay of smaller gravel. Most of the sheet piles were driven into place. Work now involved re-inforcing the base of the sheet wall. On this side of the river, that work required the placement of steel-rod reinforced concrete pouring. Weekend stroll along the riverbank to get a closer look at the structures. Wanted to monitor the effects of the overnight deluge of rain.

Took the opportunity also to fully explore The Slang (Rehill) area on the other side of the bank. Hadn't been there before. Spectacularly bright and sunny day, interestingly different view of the buildings we work in. Apart from occasional soft surface, there was little evidence of flooding.

That would occur a few days later!

After many hard hours of marching, the soldiers get closer to their destination – Jerusalem. They will finish the last kilometers of their march in urban terrain.

At the end of the gruesome eight month training that recruits of the IDF’s Paratroopers Brigade have to complete their final challenge. Before the recruits will be fully fledged soldiers of the Paratrooper’s Brigade they have to finish their ‘Masa Kumta’, which translates to ‘Beret March’. This is an all night 90km march in full gear, through any kind of weather, at the end of which young Paratroopers receive their red berets. This signifies the end of their training and full admission to the active forces of the Paratrooper’s Brigade.
