Illumacanth, by: Rebecca Anders

From the Burning Man website: The Illumacanth is a massive fishy monster surging up from the ground, with mouth agape and brain alight. Its dark, deeply textured exterior surrounds a bright, reflective interior, into which one may venture through its toothy jaws. Elevated over its open head is a halo of silver bird-fish which dance and spin. Flame effects and undulating lights enliven this mysterious beast, and invite the participant to rest on its fins, gather inside, and sneak through its gills. The Illumacanth is a free-standing, interactive sculptural installation made primarily of metal. It provides seating and gathering space, and features flame and light effects as well as kinetic elements.

Shifter and M&C both suggested Minke Whale for the species of this large mammal. According to wikipedia this whale is around 7m in length, and at least 4000kg. They remain fairly numerous because they are smaller than some of the more sought after whales, and thus avoided being hunted until the populations of the bigger whales had crashed.

The splashes they made were very impressive, but I won't post a picture of a splash. :)

This was the first time I'd ever seen a whale (I'm not counting in captivity or dolphins). I was very happy about our luck of seeing this. There were a number of them, and they were just having a blast jumping all over.

Fishing

Oregon is known for its coast, so it’s not a surprise that fishing is one of the things you can do in Depoe Bay. This is the best fishing spot for any angler wishing for a laidback, less crowded trip.

The common sea creatures occupying the bay are crab, halibut, lingcod, rainbow trout, Chinook salmon, Coho salmon, sturgeon, and rockfish. For best results, it’s wise to hire a fishing charter to assist in your fishing adventure.

With apologies to Ernest Hemingway. My Dad on the deep sea fishing boat at the end of the trip. We didn't catch much, but we had a great time.

Back before I had my 60D in Hawaii fishing, watching the sun rise!

The dolphin falls behind as the captain keeps the boat at full throttle. Ah, well, his job is to find fish to catch, not pictures to take.

This has taken me a while...

Hulls long abandoned St Andrews Dock, once home to Hulls deep water fishing fleet stands silent.

What you see now as wildflowers, trees & marsh grasses used to be water & full of deep sea fishing trawlers unloading fish for market, those days have passed.

Coelacanths were thought to have become extinct around 66 million years ago, but were rediscovered in 1938 off the coast of South Africa.

The coelacanth's continued survival is threatened by commercial deep-sea trawling, in which coelacanths are caught as bycatch.

Here is The Sylph as a a party fishing boat based in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY.

Some time ago, I researched The Sylph. I remember her when she carried my Aunt from the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan, NYC. to Sea Gate, Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City. Sea Gate was a gated community on Coney Island, at the western tip of Long Island, in Brooklyn. I remember, every weekday evening, the disembarked passengers walking by our house which was just a block from the pier where she docked in Sea Gate.

Patrol Yacht: PY-5 - U.S.S. Sylph

Built by John Roach and Co., Chester, PA

Acquired by the Navy in June 1898

Commissioned USS Sylph 18 August 1989 at the Norfolk Navy Yard for use as a Presidential Yacht

Designated a Patrol Yacht, PY-5, 17 July 1921

Decommissioned, 27 April 1929 at the Norfolk Navy Yard

Struck from the Navy list, 29 April 1929

Sold, 26 November 1929 to Mr. Frank B. Clair of Brooklyn, NY (Mr. Clair was reportedly an ex-bootlegger). Mr. Clair and his partner Captain John Nugent converted her into a party fishing boat and operated her from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY.

The Sylph fished from Sheepshead Bay until April 1939, when she changed her business and ran a ferry service from Sea Gate, Brooklyn to the Battery in Manhattan.

In 1941, her owners defaulted on the mortgage held by the Worthington Diesel Company and they took possession of the vessel.

Fate unknown.

Specifications:

Displacement 152 t. [I assume t stands for tons or tonnes as the British say]

Length 123' 8"

Draft 7' 6"

Speed 15 kts.

Complement: 1905 - 31

Armament: 1905 - One 6-pounder

1935 - Replaced by a 400hp Worthington diesel engine.

"The "SYLPH" was the official United States Presidential Yacht for President Theodore Roosevelt. The US Navy originally purchased the "SYLPH" in June 1898 from her builder, John Roach & Co., Chester, PA, and they commissioned the vessel as a Presidential Yacht on August 18, 1898 at the Norfolk Navy Yard. The "SYLPH" served in this capacity for Presidents McKinley (1898-1901), Roosevelt (1901-1909), Taft (1909-1913) and Wilson (1913-1921).

In 1921, the Navy re-designated her as Patrol Yacht "PY-5" and she sailed on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. In 1925, she was permanently moored at the Washington Navy Yard, where she remained until her decommissioning in April 1929.

Frank B. Clair of Brooklyn, New York purchased her in November 1929 (Mr. Clair was reportedly an ex-bootlegger.) Mr. Clair and his partner Captain John Nugent converted her into a party fishing boat and operated her from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY.

In 1935, her boiler failed and she was re-powered with a 400 HP Worthington diesel engine. Also during 1935, Jeremiah 'Jerry' Driscoll purchased Mr. Clair's share of the business. She continued fishing from Sheepshead Bay until April 1939, when she changed her business and ran a ferry service from Sea Gate, Brooklyn to the Battery in Manhattan.

Alas, in 1941, her owners defaulted on the mortgage held by the Worthington Diesel Company and they took possession of the vessel. The "SYLPH" is the only vessel in history to go from presidents to porgies."

Fate unknown.
