Οι κάδοι απορριμάτων είναι μαζί με τα φανάρια που ρυθμίζουν την κυκλοφορία τα δύο ίσως πιο κοινότοπα και ταυτόχρονα λειτουργικά αντικείμενα της εξωτερικής καθημερινότητας μιας πόλης. Κινητό στοιχείο του Δημόσιου Χώρου, ο κάδος, λειτουργεί αθόρυβα και σταθερά ως το φαγοκύτταρο που τελικά απορροφά την πυρετική δραστηριότητα της μητρόπολης.
Καθώς τα απορρίμματα της δραστηριότητας αυτής συσσωρεύονται διαρκώς βαθειά στα σωθικά του, ο κάδος δείχνει κάθε δεδομένη στιγμή τον χαρακτήρα της γειτονιάς όπου βρίσκεται. Η εικόνα που παρουσιάζει βέβαια δεν είναι πια αρραγής, αστραφτερή, θελκτική αλλά κομματιασμένη, μουτζουρωμένη, μιαρή. Και όμως, οτιδήποτε καταλήγει σ΄έναν κάδο ήταν μόλις πριν από λίγες στιγμές πολύτιμο για κείνον που τώρα το απορρίπτει. Αναμφίβολα, οι κάδοι είναι γεμάτοι από πολύτιμα σκουπίδια.
Εδώ, η καλλιτεχική διαδικασία έχει μεταβάλλει ένα κοινό, καθημερινό αντικείμενο σε έργο τέχνης κρατώντας ωστόσο πολλά στοιχεία από την ίδια την φύση του αντικειμένου. Ένα από αυτά είναι η ιδιότητα της συσσώρευσης. Αντί για σκουπίδια ατάκτως εριμμένα η καλλιτέχνιδα συγκέντρωσε και συνάρμοσε αργά και προσεκτικά χιλιάδες, μικρές, ροζ πούλιες, αυτήν την φορά όχι στο εσωτερικό του κάδου αλλα στην εξωτερική του επιφάνεια που πια λειτουργεί ως ένα είδος καθρέφτη. Έτσι, ο κάθε θεατής πλησιάζοντας τον κάδο έρχεται αντιμέτωπος με μια εικόνα παραισθητική και τεμαχισμένη ακριβώς σαν αυτή που αφήνουν τα σκουπίδια του σ΄έναν πραγματικό κάδο έξω στο δρόμο.
Ακόμα κι αν δεν διαβάσει κανείς την υπογραφή εύκολα νιώθει πως το έργο έχει γίνει από γυναίκα. Είναι επειδή πραγματική του υπογραφή είναι το χρώμα του. Συνώνυμο της τεχνητής λάμψης και της ρηχής αθωώτητας, το ροζ, -ένα κατά τεκμήριο ''γυναικείο'' χρώμα χρησιμοποιείται εδώ για να δηλώσει το μόνο πράγμα που θεωρείται πως δεν μπορεί: το βάθος. Αυτό που επιδιώκει η καλλιτέχνιδα να φτιάξει είναι ένα ''βαθύ ροζ'' έργο (deep pink). Και το καταφέρνει. Το ροζ παύει πια να είναι “γλυκό” και “συμπαθητικό” γίνεται δυσάρεστα εκτυφλωτικό και βαθειά κυνικό. Αν η χάρη και η κοσμιότητα θεωρούνται αρετές -και υποχρεώσεις- των γυναικών, η Μαρίνα Γκενάντιεβα μας προσφέρει εδώ μία άλλου τύπου εκλεπτυσμένη οπτική μ΄ένα έργο του οποίου η ειρωνική κομψότητα είναι ίσως η κυρίαρχη αισθητική ποιότητα.

I think this must be another lillie, in a deep shade of pink, also seen in a neighbourhood garden. All of the flowers were hanging downwards and had these amazingly long stamen protruding out of the trumpet shaped flowers.
After a volunteer shift on 23 July 2014, I wasn't too far away from the Erlton/Roxboro Natural Area, where I was finally going to go on a botany walk. Having been to this location several times before, I knew it was a short, easy, flat trail, and that I could go as far as I wanted and then turn back early, which is what I did. I've missed pretty well all the botany and birding walks the last few months, which is quite depressing. The main thing I wanted to see were the Nodding / Musk Thistles, as these are my favourite species of Thistle. They are called a "weed", but I love to see them. The sun was unfortunately in the wrong direction, so I was only able to get a handful of shots, but better than nothing.
With a couple of hours to "kill", I spent them at the Reader Rock Garden, which was just a few minutes' drive away from the evening botany walk location. This beautiful, vibrant pink Peony was the only one still in reasonable condition that day. It's a gloomy, overcast day today, so it feels good to see a bright splash of colour. It's only 15°C this morning, which feels good after some recent hot weather.
There are only six new photos from My Contacts and it's already 10:30 a.m... Hmm, I wonder if there is problem with Flickr, or if people are just too busy to post photos at the moment.

Tillandsia cyanea is one of 374 species of the genus Tillandsia. Pink Quill is an epiphyte from Ecuador.
Blooming Time: Winter; Inflorescence is a flattened plume of deep pink or red bracts from which violet blue flowers emerge, 1 or 2 at a time, for long periods.
Culture: Tillandsia cyanea do best in bright indirect sunlight. They need medium temperatures of 50 to 65 degrees at night and day temperatures of 68 degrees or higher. Pink Quills need a loose, fast draining soil [...].
This photo was taken at the Reader Rock Garden in Calgary on 24 June 2015, after a volunteer shift. Each year, I think what a beautiful colour these Peonies are.
Today, 10 November 2015, the sun is shining, which feels so good after a dreary, snowy day yesterday. The temperature as I type is -3C (windchill -6C), so it's definitely feeling like winter.

This photo was taken at the Reader Rock Garden on 27 April 2016, when I called in after a volunteer shift. These Hellebore flowers are so beautiful and I was happy to see that a couple of the flowers were growing so that I could just see the inside of the flower. Usually, the flower heads are hanging down more. I didn't realize, or had forgotten, that this plant bloomed so early in the year.
"Commonly known as hellebores /ˈhɛlᵻbɔərz/, the Eurasian genus Helleborus comprises approximately 20 species of herbaceous or evergreen perennial flowering plants in the family Ranunculaceae, within which it gave its name to the tribe of Helleboreae. The scientific name Helleborus derives from the Greek name for H. orientalis, ἑλλέβορος helléboros, from elein "to injure" and βορά borá "food". Many species are poisonous. Despite names such as "winter rose", "Christmas rose" and "Lenten rose", hellebores are not closely related to the rose family (Rosaceae).

Update on the massive wildfire in the Fort McMurray area:
"On May 1, 2016, a wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. On May 3, it swept through the community, destroying approximately 2,400 homes and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history. As of May 17, it continues to spread across northern Alberta, consuming forested areas and impacting Athabasca oil sands operations. It may become the costliest disaster in Canadian history.

Yesterday, 18 May 2016, I went to what was most likely my last volunteer shift. I have been volunteering there for about 18 years and it has been a wonderful experience. However, as the number of clients constantly rises, even more so with the poor state of the economy, the problem of parking has become a real issue. Though we have to park on the nearby street, usually at the very far end of it, I now find that each time I go, I have to park further and further away. There is no sidewalk on which to walk and there are many huge trucks coming and going all the time. Makes for a dangerous walk. In winter, it will be even worse. I always walk in pain and yesterday was, I think, the final straw, when I had to park even further away. I have been volunteering at several places for the last 36 or so years, so I know I will miss it, but I was just not enjoying the long walk and always wondering if I was even going to be able to find a parking spot. I know I will miss good friends there, terribly.
Anyway, after my shift, I thought I had better call in at the Reader Rock Garden, in case I don't get over there for a long time. I wasn't sure about the weather and I did feel the odd raindrop, plus it was rather windy. However, the scent around the garden was wonderful - I could have stayed there for hours, just breathing it in. Plenty of flowers to enjoy. The few workers do such a great job of keeping this place looking beautiful. If you visit and you happen to see one of the staff or volunteers, do let them know how much you appreciate all their hard work and care. I know they would appreciate it.

A Rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses. The name rose comes from French, itself from Latin rosa, which was perhaps borrowed from Oscan, from Greek ρόδον rhódon (Aeolic βρόδον wródon), itself borrowed from Old Persian wrd- (wurdi), related to Avestan varəδa, Sogdian ward, Parthian wâr. The leaves are borne alternately on the stem. In most species they are 5 to 15 centimetres (2.0 to 5.9 in) long, pinnate, with (3–) 5–9 (–13) leaflets and basal stipules; the leaflets usually have a serrated margin, and often a few small prickles on the underside of the stem. Most roses are deciduous but a few (particularly from South east Asia) are evergreen or nearly so. The hybrid garden rose "Amber Flush" The flowers of most species have five petals, with the exception of Rosa sericea, which usually has only four. Each petal is divided into two distinct lobes and is usually white or pink, though in a few species yellow or red. Beneath the petals are five sepals (or in the case of some Rosa sericea, four). These may be long enough to be visible when viewed from above and appear as green points alternating with the rounded petals. There are multiple superior ovaries that develop into achenes. Roses are insect-pollinated in nature. The aggregate fruit of the rose is a berry-like structure called a rose hip. Many of the domestic cultivars do not produce hips, as the flowers are so tightly petalled that they do not provide access for pollination. The hips of most species are red, but a few (e.g. Rosa pimpinellifolia) have dark purple to black hips. Each hip comprises an outer fleshy layer, the hypanthium, which contains 5–160 "seeds" (technically dry single-seeded fruits called achenes) embedded in a matrix of fine, but stiff, hairs. Rose hips of some species, especially the dog rose (Rosa canina) and rugosa rose (Rosa rugosa), are very rich in vitamin C, among the richest sources of any plant. The hips are eaten by fruit-eating birds such as thrushes and waxwings, which then disperse the seeds in their droppings. Some birds, particularly finches, also eat the seeds. Rose thorns are actually prickles – outgrowths of the epidermis. While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called "thorns", they are technically prickles — outgrowths of the epidermis (the outer layer of tissue of the stem). (True thorns, as produced by e.g. Citrus or Pyracantha, are modified stems, which always originate at a node and which have nodes and internodes along the length of the thorn itself.) Rose prickles are typically sickle-shaped hooks, which aid the rose in hanging onto other vegetation when growing over it. Some species such as Rosa rugosa and Rosa pimpinellifolia have densely packed straight prickles, probably an adaptation to reduce browsing by animals, but also possibly an adaptation to trap wind-blown sand and so reduce erosion and protect their roots (both of these species grow naturally on coastal sand dunes). Despite the presence of prickles, roses are frequently browsed by deer. A few species of roses have only vestigial prickles that have no points.

On my way back from the dentist (having had more teeth extracted), I decided to visit the home-made food shop to see what I could get for dinner tonight (so I didn't have to cook!!) and saw this guy standing outside the shop. I wondered why there was a man, dressed in pink, barefoot and looking decidedly pregnant, standing by the shop. Lol! Well of course I had to ask, didn't I? I was told that because the shop is called Phat Boyz, the guy was supposed to look fat (not pregnant!) and that it is Ken (of Barbie & her boyfriend fame!) and since he has stood outside the shop sales have increased because everyone is curious about what he is doing there! We suggested that Barbie in a bikini might work even better, Hehehe.
Is this allowable Crow? I will keep looking and hoping for a replacement. But this was just so funny - I had to try!!
