A heavy coastal fog has rolled into the redwood forest this morning.
Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah
A tough little Utah juniper is perched on the sandstone edge of Dead Horse Point.
Part of their success is due to their root system. About two thirds of the tree's mass is in its roots. A tap root can go straight down 25 feet (8 meters) searching for water; lateral roots can go horizontally over 100 feet (30 meters).
I saw this Hermit Thrush kicking up leaves and foraging deep in the woods at about 5pm today. There was still enough light to provide backlighting to the surrounding foliage and when it hopped onto an old stump the setting was just right for a portrait shot.

Same morning as yesterday's shot of the valley and hills, but earlier, as the first light was building on the southeast horizon. I was shooting directly into the light, so a lot of adjustments were needed in processing. The Ecotour Road runs across a high upland plateau, with deep coulees on either side and the valley unfolding ahead - consequently there are a lot of excellent backgrounds for wildlife photography from the road itself. I'm not adverse to hiking, but in this case I was able to shoot from the rolling red Toyota blind.
And bison always look better with frost on 'em...

Working uphill out of the mile -or so- long cut between milepost 23 and 24 of the Cane Creek Branch, the once-a-week Union Pacific Potash Local on this day had 23 loads on the drawbar for the trip back to Grand junction.
The crew will outlaw in a few miles, swapping for a fresh one from Grand Junction at Seven Mile.
A lifespan could be pass along this 36-mile long branch in order to get all the possible angle and point of view it had to offer.

Sant Martí del Corb is a hidden jewel in La Garrotxa, Catalonia. Located in a deep forest, this place is magical, even in a sunny spring day (imagine in a foggy autumn afternoon).

The Fade Out Line - Phoebe Killdeer and The Short Straws
This is Middle Falls on Mt Airy Creek. I made this single from the trail about 100 feet above the creek below on river-right. This is probably the best vantage point for a view on the length of the waterfall, as it is practically a slide. There is no way to reach the base of this waterfall from this view, or for that matter, any section of the creek except for the upper and lower extremities. The ridgeline trail is a straight vertical drop to the bottom with no hand-holds. This photo accommodates and portrays the length of the waterfall but how extremely steep it is viewed from this point. I did find a possible entry point about 100 yads downstream off the trail possibly leading down to the creek side, but I wouldn't even think of it without a 100-foot rope. Even if I were able to make it to the creek below, I'm not sure how visible the waterfall would be given the geometry of it's upper height and rhododendron overgrowth. I'm still going to plan an excursion to make it down though.
Looking back at 2017, one of my favorite chases besides shooting the Pickens in South Carolina was our trip to Quebec to follow the Central Maine & Quebec. It was really neat to see the Bangor & Aroostook "Heritage" SD40-2F 9017 barn leading train number one across former CP Sherbrooke Sub. Hidden deep in the woods CMQ number 1 is making track speed passing through the town of Milan, Quebec on Saturday July 22, 2017. Photo by Zachary Carlson
