It isn't until you come to a spiritual understanding of who you are - not necessarily a religious feeling, but deep down, the spirit within - that you can begin to take control.

A recent trip to the Shire and Hobbiton. These are photos from within one of the two hobbit holes you can go inside.
I normally only hear them doing their thing way up in the old trees around here, but yesterday -- while sitting in a yogic breathwork sequence :) -- I saw this foraging woodpecker hopping all over the Linden tree in front of my balcony.
I managed a few shots through the window pane and wind-blown foliage -- and off he was. It's not a high-quality photo, but I just love these birdies and want to share my joy with you. <3

I decided to look at my digital archives, to recover and reprocess some old straight-out-of the point and shoot camera jpgs.
I'll post one picture every thursday, with the motto "Great places, bad cameras"

Looking back at 2017, one of my favorite chases besides shooting the Pickens in South Carolina was our trip to Quebec to follow the Central Maine & Quebec. It was really neat to see the Bangor & Aroostook "Heritage" SD40-2F 9017 barn leading train number one across former CP Sherbrooke Sub. Hidden deep in the woods CMQ number 1 is making track speed passing through the town of Milan, Quebec on Saturday July 22, 2017. Photo by Zachary Carlson

One of my still lives at candle's light to celebrate the cherries harvest.
Cherries are the fruit I prefer and also the true protagonists, the most precious fruits of my area.
I like to display cherries in a rustic way, on wooden trays or bowls but in this new Still Life shooting, I have been willing to lend what cherries represent in my area, pure jewels, more than the best chocolate pralines... An unforgettable gourmet delicacy for both taste and eyes. An experience that only lasts 2/3 weeks in the year, the time they are mature and picked up. Something unmissable...

Especially for this shooting:
Wrapping and display is important if the content is.
So, this time, I have been using as display tools only silversmith handmade author's jewellery.
Here to the right, a mini sterling silver bowl for the whipped cream, to the left a mini sterling silver fondue holder to melt chocolate and then deep inside a cherry. I made it for real, so in this photo chocolate is melting, well, maybe boiling and the candle blown up very quickly. I could not replace it as it's not a regular tealight, it's a customized mini tealight made especially to adapt to this miniature sculpture.
I built some candle's stands using some old camera tripods and fixing the candle holders on top of them. Apart this, well, I have an appointed personally conceived "technique" to display further candles in the angles where I need this particular natural light.
The ice cubes or the dry ice gas would eventually complete the special sweet fondue.
The cherries had just been picked up from the tree, I hurried up to shoot them in all their splendor of freshness.
This vision and this flavour are never possible when buying cherries from the groceries.
Zero km food is in most cases the very best food.

A macro view of the business end of a 16-inch chain saw blade. The frame represents a span of 3-inches across.
I recently bought this chain saw to remove some dead trees on the property, which of course means that it first gets hoisted onto the photography table.
Strobist/technical info:
The scene is a 15-image focus stack composite. It was illuminated by two Nikon SB900 and one SB700 speedlights. The SB900s were placed at 9- and 3-o'clock, one-foot above and two-feet away from the blade. They were fired in Manual mode @ ¼ +0.7EV - power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. The SB700 was placed at one-o'clock for backlight. It also was one-foot above and two-feet away from the blade. It was fired in Manual mode @ ¼ - power through a gridded snoot.
The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers. The SB700 was placed in SU-4 mode and triggered by the other flashes.
