The other columbine was originally pink and white. Both have been transformed by DDG [Google's Deep Dream Generator].

 

Friends have noted that this looks like fun. It is a powerful mix of fun, frustration, excitement and satisfaction. I recommend it to anyone who wants to spend hours and hours fooling around with it. Beware - I think it is addictive.

Deep East Texas.

 

This mature hardwood stream bottom looked to be ablaze, with fall color from the forest floor to the canopy. Most prominent in this photo are the yellow leaves of Florida Maple. Also present was American Elm, Black Gum, and a variety of oaks and hickories.

Deep Water Bend which can be seen in the distance is a popular and peaceful fishing spot on the Pine River on the north side of Brisbane. Mainly out of view on the left is the Tinchi Tamba Wetlands with its pleasant walks, bird hide and large mob of Kangaroos.

This flamingo got into really deep water, so much so that its long legs are hidden from view. You can even see some fishes swimming under its belly

Deep Blue was an chess-playing computer made by IBM. Its name its a play of words combining IBM`s logo color (Blue) with its deep analyzing capabilities.

 

The computer used an artificial inteligence algorithm from the Minimax family. The playing power of these automathic game programs grows in a direct ratio to the deepness of play (number of probable future movements). Therefore the nme of the machine, Deep Blue, relates the comany´s color with its huge exploration deepness, thanks to the blend of hardware and software.

 

Deep Blue was the first computer to win a chess match with the current world champion at the time, Garry Kasparov. This happened on February 10th 1996. However the overall meet was won by Kasparov by 4-2. The two players met again in 1997, and on this ocassion the computer won the overall match. The software was written on C and ran under the AIX operating system. The computer was capable of calculating 200 million positions per second of game.

Deep Blue fue una computadora de IBM que jugaba al ajedrez. Su nombre se podría traducir al español como "Azul Oscuro" o "Azul Profundo".

 

La segunda de las traducciones es más acertada, ya que se emplea un algoritmo de inteligencia artificial de la familia Minimax. La fuerza de juego de estos programas de juego automático es mayor cuanto mayor sea la profundidad (número de movimientos futuros) hasta la que llega la exploración, y por tanto mayor el número de nodos. De este modo, el nombre Deep Blue es un juego de palabras que relaciona el azul (color corporativo de IBM) con la gran profundidad de exploración gracias a la potencia de su hardware.

 

Deep Blue fue la primera computadora que venció a un Campeón del Mundo vigente, Garry Kasparov, con un ritmo de juego lento. Esto ocurrió el 10 de febrero de 1996, en una memorable partida. Sin embargo, Kasparov ganó 3 y empató 2 de las siguientes partidas, derrotando a Deep Blue por 4-2. El encuentro concluyó el 17 de febrero de 1996.

 

Deep Blue fue mejorando y jugó de nuevo contra Kasparov en mayo de 1997, ganando el encuentro a 6 partidas por 3'5-2'5, lo que lo convirtió en la primera computadora en derrotar a un campeón del mundo vigente, en un encuentro con ritmo de juego de torneo estándar. El encuentro concluyó el 11 de mayo. El sistema saca su fuerza de juego principalmente en la fuerza bruta que calcula el sistema central. Su programa de juego de ajedrez fue escrito en C y corrió bajo el sistema operativo AIX. Era capaz de calcular 200 millones de posiciones por segundo, dos veces más rápido que la versión de 1996. En junio de 1997, Deep Blue era el 259 superordenador más poderoso, capaz de calcular 11.38 gigaflops, aunque toda esta potencia no estaba pensada en realidad para jugar al ajedrez.

While I seldom take photos of sparrows, this one caught my attention with its dramatic markings. The gray crown, the deep rust colored feathering and the dark mottled breast were of particular note.

Oneonta Gorge near Columbia River Gorge, Oregon is a popular day hike near Portland. The gorge is not very accessible in the Spring, as water is typically rushing down the sides, filling up the canyon to depths of up to 20 feet.

Few photos from our trip to Knights Inlet Lodge, 150 miles northwest of Vancouver. The Lodge lies in the southern reaches of one of the last intact temperate rainforests on earth, the Great Bear Rainforest – home to Indigenous peoples, ancient forests, and wild bears since time immemorial.

 

The remote location is accessible only by sea or by air. The West coast-style floating lodge is tucked deep in the sheltered waters of Knight Inlet, it is a short floatplane ride from Campbell River, on Vancouver Island.

 

We arrived at Knight Inlet on a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter, single-engined, high-wing, propeller-driven, short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft built in 1958. Flying on a 64 year old Havilland seaplane was legendary. Ceiling 18,800. Takeoff distance (50′) 1,155. Landing distance (50′) 1,500.

Out of the blue Talia contacted me for a shoot. Very surprising since I hadn't shot with her since 2015 or so. During that gap she went through a number of personal issues but she survived and is doing well. She has a great personality and a lot of energy - she is definitely fun to shoot with.

 

I took these photos on another hot July evening at the Caldwell Train Depot.

Taming Light #14

Another experiment with deep colours - pushing the limits of the film.

 

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. Coloured dyes were added to the clear plastic as it hardened adding further distortions to the shapes. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. The film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

This image has been rather tricky both in its making and post processing.

 

First, the location. Well it’s as about as photogenic and evocative a scene as you can find. Not only is it hard to get to and after miles of twisty single track roads, it feels like major achievement to actually get there. It has wonderfully smooth, sand polished slate outcrops (conveniently graphical), but not just a few, hundreds of them! The incoming tides protrude towards you at different speeds (I assume due to the width and particular geology creating drag on the water), which offers richness to the photographic opportunities when it comes to movement, (incoming and receding water creates different forms and textures). It also has the advantage of being west facing, and here comes its one aberration, it’s exceeding tricky to work with the setting sun at this time of year to create a balanced composition. Yes I could go towards the end of September, when the sun would be at the end of the beach, but then again it would probably be too easy and predictable (I can’t anyway).anyway, the graphic angles take your eye in the wrong direction and it feels like your making two separate images every time you direct your attention towards the drama.

 

You should have seen me in this 5 minute period before the sun popped out beneath the cloud bank, knowing that it would illuminate the scene perfectly, knowing that I was going to have only one shot at this location, literally (30 seconds of illumination to be accurate) and knowing that I had to find a composition that would balance every element and that I would have the opportunity like this again. As you can imagining I hurdled the outcrops faster than a world champion and by the time I found this interesting, moderately graphic foreground rock I was totally soaked, breathless and almost ready to make the best of the elements before me. Anyway I made this image and walked back to the car dripping wet but happy.

 

Now the second part to this image is the processing, well as you can see, it’s a thorny customer. The dynamic range is massive and processing a balance believable single image was (and is) fiddly. Well as you can see it’s a high contrast movement image. The medium length of exposure has taken just a tad too much movement out of the water than I’m happy with, but the imbalance in the centre of the image needed most of the attention. Anyway, even considering the technical post processing challenges, for me this image works. Yes if you’re a pixel pushing, 100% viewing photographer, then you’re going to point out that I’ve lost detail in the shadows and the dynamic range isn’t working, but if it makes you happy to tell me then cool, bring it on! And I see this may should like an excuse, But for me photography is fundamentally about how the images stimulate our primitive deep brain not the frontal hemisphere.

The crab was deep in a coral head and there was just enough surge to push me back and forth but I was lucky and clicked the shutter at the right time.
