Eleanor's Baby Dedication, 13 December 2009

The Dedication Stone built into the outside of the west face of the tower is the most remarkable monument from the Roman Lincol with Angolo Saxon additions.

Eirtig had taken a Roman Rombstone, leaving the Latin inscription intact, then added his own Old English message into the pointed gale, writing from the bottom to top - inviting readers to continue gazing up to heaven itself.

Inscription …

“Eirtig had me built and endowed to the glory of Christ and Saint Mary XP.”

The Church was built by the wealthy merchant, Eirtig, on his own land and was under the control of his heirs until 1163. It was then acquired by the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln Cathedral. In 1263 two other ‘family’ churches were acquired to form one large parish. Much of Lincoln was then being rebuilt in stone, and churches were being updated.

A larger, fine Early English nave and chancel were added to the sturdy Saxon tower, with thin buttressed walls, high-pointed arches, slender pillars, lofty roof and fine lancet windows.

A Roman Gravestone is set into the base of the tower at St. Mary le Wigford. The Gravestone inscription reads: "Dis Manibus / nomini Sacri / Brusci fili(i) civis / Senoni et Carsso / unae coniugis / eius et Quinti f(ilii)" [To the gods of the dead/departed/underworld. For the name (family of) of Sacer, son of Bruscus, citizen of the Senones et Caessouna his wife and Quintus his son].

In the top section, this Saxon inscription has been added: "Eirtig me let wircean and fios godian Criste to lofe and sancte Marie XP" [Eirtig had me built and endowed to the glory of Christ and Saint Mary, XP]. Eirtig was benefactor who raised the funds to erect the Church.

Everyone enjoyed the reception given by the Blue Grass Army Depot after the dedication of the Battle of Richmond signage.
