*Dedicated to the memory of Federico Fellini (January 20, 1920-October 31, 1993)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I mean to say if you photograph the sea in black and white, the spectator attributes the blue of his sea to that sea that is photographed in black and white, so for him it is really the sea, because the spectator puts into it the sea of his memory. But if you photograph in color a blue sea, you may give that sea a blue that is not accepted by the spectator ... he does not recognize it as his.

(...)

So I want to say that it is difficult on a technical level to re-create a chromatic reality that is all subjective, because the camera's eye is not the human eye, it does not have memory, it does not have nostalgic sensations, it does not have sentiments, it does not intervene with feelings. If the camera captures a reality that to you is in red tones because it's your feeling that is red, but instead the camera says that it is green, therefore it is a most difficult operation on an artistic, magic, and subtle level."

Dedicated to modernist Dublin writer Samuel Beckett, this contemporary stunner opened to the public in 2009.

Samuel Beckett Bridge is a cable-stayed swingbridge in Dublin, Ireland that joins Sir John Rogerson's Quay on the south side of the River Liffey to Guild Street and North Wall Quay in the Docklands area.

Architect Santiago Calatrava was the lead designer of the bridge.

Constructed by a "Graham Hollandia Joint Venture", the main span of the Samuel Beckett Bridge is supported by 31 cable stays from a doubly back-stayed single forward arc tubular tapered spar, with decking provided for four traffic and two pedestrian lanes. It is also capable of opening through an angle of 90 degrees allowing ships to pass through.

The harp being the national symbol for Ireland from as early as the thirteenth century, the shape of the spar and its cables is said to evoke an image of a harp lying on its edge.

Consolidated B-24-H Liberator 41-29418 was originally named as ‘Turnip Termite.’ Its original nose art was painted by Clayton Hutsell at the 486th. Bomb Group at USAAF Station 174 Sudbury in Suffolk, but the aircraft was transferred to USAAF Station 115 Shipdham in Norfolk before he could put the name of 'Turnip Termite' on it. It was renamed 'Pappy’s Chillun' at the 44th. Bomb Group.

41-29418, coded QK -?, crashed on the 21st. April 1944 with the loss of all crew except the pilot and co-pilot. The main body of the wreckage still lies in the lake at Taverham Mills.

The aircraft was on its way on a bombing mission to the German town of Zwickau. During assembly, five miles northwest of Norwich, and one mile northeast of Ringland Hills, the aircraft was climbing into formation, traveling at 155 to 160 mph through overcast, in severe icing conditions. When it reached 14,000 feet, the aircraft lurched violently and started swerving to the right. The pilots had no control over the aircraft as it swerved back to the left, and then started to spin tightly toward the ground. The plane then turned onto its back and the right-wing and tail were torn off by the violent manoeuvres. The two pilots were thrown into the top of the cockpit, and when the cabin ripped apart, they were thrown clear of the wreckage.

No definite statement can be made as to the cause of the accident, but it was the opinion of the investigating board that the airplane picked up too much ice, was forced into a stall, and from there into a spin when it fell apart. The aircraft was heavily loaded with eight 1,000 lb. bombs and 2,700 gallons of fuel. Another aircraft, flown by Lt. Dine of 506th. Bomb Squadron, experienced the same icing conditions. It went into a spin, but the pilots finally managed to recover control at 4,000 feet.

The two survivors from this accident, 2nd. Lieutenant's Havens and Del Grande were taken to the hospital immediately. Havens suffered severe injuries when he landed in a tree, fractured his left ankle, and his spine. He spent some time at the 231st. Hospital. He did not return to the 44th. Bomb Group. Del Grande seriously injured his ankle when he landed. He flew no more missions for the 44th. Bomb Group and was transferred to the 70th. RCD on 10th. December 1944, for transfer back to the United States. However, it appears that Del Grande recovered and was transferred to the 93rd. Bomb Group, where he completed his tour with them.

On 21st. April 2001, 57 years after the crash, this memorial was dedicated at Taverham Mill.

Well because you dedicated one for me x]

The Basilica dedicated to S. Chiara in Assisi (Italy) was built after the death of Chiara, between 1255 and 1265 around the old church dedicated to S. Giorgio, which kept S. Francesco’s body until 1230.

The architectonic style is the gotic one, and the church looks like very similar to the one dedicated to S. Francesco located in Assisi too.

The outside is characterized by three colossal arches (dated back to end of XIV cent.) which support the left side of the church.

The present sanctuary was dedicated in 1887 after being located in four other locations around downtown Macon. The Sanctuary contains many interested Christian symbols to enhance our worship. Among them: the presence of the trefoil (a symbol of the Trinity); the presence of the quatrefoil (a traditional Christian symbol of 4 overlapping circles); a beautiful stained-glass rose window; and 12 beautiful stained-glass windows depicting the life of Jesus. Also of architectural note, the inside of the sanctuary roof is shaped like an upside-down ship’s hull, using the traditional Christian symbol of a boat to reflect that safety and sanctuary can be found in this holy space.

Beneath the sanctuary is the Great Room, a smaller gathering place and home to the Faithful Followers Sunday School Department. It was christened “The Great Room” in 2004, after a renovation, in appreciation of “The Greatest Generation,” the older members of FBCX who given their time, resources, and talents through the years to make First Baptist a place of worship, discipleship, missions and fellowship.

This image is dedicated to Jan Boer, one of my Flickr contacts. The first time I ever saw an aracari was on his website.

I found the aracari in a tree in front of the lodge. The bird kept flying from branch to branch making it hard to photograph it. I did not even know for sure if I had a decent image of the bird until I reviewed the image later.

The Chestnut-eared Aracari (Pteroglossus castanotis) is an Aracari that is native to central and south-eastern South America, where this lowland species inhabits western Brazil north to eastern Colombia and south through eastern Peru, northern and eastern Bolivia and northern Argentina.

Aracaris generally roost socially throughout the year. Up to five adults and their fledged offspring sleep in the same hole with their long tails folded over their backs.

It has the widest distribution of any aracari species and is one of the most common toucan species.

They typically nest in trees with appropriate hollows, most of which are previously made by woodpeckers. Other hollows are the result of a branch break and ensuing rotting of the heart wood from rain over a period of time.

Both the male and female share the incubation and chick rearing duties.

The Katyń Memorial is dedicated to the victims of the Katyn massacre in 1940. Created by Polish-American sculptor Andrzej Pitynski, the memorial stands at Exchange Place in Jersey City, New Jersey, USA near the mouth of the Hudson River along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.

Unveiled in June 1991 a 34 feet tall bronze statue of a soldier, gagged and bound, impaled in the back by a bayoneted rifle, stands atop a granite base containing Katyn soil. It commemorates the massacre of thousands of Polish prisoners by order of Joseph Stalin in April and May 1940 after Soviet Union troops had invaded eastern Poland. The event came after the partition of Poland and the occupation of the nation during World War II. The eastside of the pediment has a bronze relief depicting the starvation of Poles sent to Siberia.

This chapel, dedicated to St. Sixtus, is one of my favorite motifs, which I visit again and again. It is located in Hartham, an isolated settlement in the municipality of Riekofen in the district of Regensburg in the Upper Palatinate. The nave of the Gothic chapel has a three-sided end in the east and is covered with a hipped saddle roof. The church tower in the west, covered with a gabled roof, was built in 1868.

The interior is covered with a flat ceiling framed with stucco. The church furnishings include a small baroque altar and a crucifix.
