Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933, it was officially renamed Hoover Dam, for President Herbert Hoover, by a joint resolution of Congress in 1947. Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume (when it is full). The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened. As the United States developed the Southwest, the Colorado River was seen as a potential source of irrigation water. An initial attempt at diverting the river for irrigation purposes occurred in the late 1890s, when land speculator William Beatty built the Alamo Canal just north of the Mexican border; the canal dipped into Mexico before running to a desolate area Beatty named the Imperial Valley. Though water from the Imperial Canal allowed for the widespread settlement of the valley, the canal proved expensive to maintain. After a catastrophic breach that caused the Colorado River to fill the Salton Sea, the Southern Pacific Railroad spent $3 million in 1906–07 to stabilize the waterway, an amount it hoped in vain would be reimbursed by the Federal Government. Even after the waterway was stabilized, it proved unsatisfactory because of constant disputes with landowners on the Mexican side of the border. As the technology of electric power transmission improved, the Lower Colorado was considered for its hydroelectric-power potential. In 1902, the Edison Electric Company of Los Angeles surveyed the river in the hope of building a 40-foot (12 m) rock dam which could generate 10,000 horsepower (7,500 kW). However, at the time, the limit of transmission of electric power was 80 miles (130 km), and there were few customers (mostly mines) within that limit. Edison allowed land options it held on the river to lapse—including an option for what became the site of Hoover Dam. In the following years, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR), known as the Reclamation Service at the time, also considered the Lower Colorado as the site for a dam. Service chief Arthur Powell Davis proposed using dynamite to collapse the walls of Boulder Canyon, 20 miles (32 km) north of the eventual dam site, into the river. The river would carry off the smaller pieces of debris, and a dam would be built incorporating the remaining rubble. In 1922, after considering it for several years, the Reclamation Service finally rejected the proposal, citing doubts about the unproven technique and questions as to whether it would in fact save money.

I've wanted to take the "TumbleWorld" project into Black & White or heavily Monochrome for some time now. This is my first shot at it. Because of the fine detail and the very Baroque lighting I thought that this image was a good candidate for a monochromatic treatment. The first of 3.
Again, exploring themes of identity and identification, linear and non-linear mentation through metaphoric imagery.

Music Link: "Broken Head" - Eno, Moebius, Roedelius. From their album "After The Heat". Brian Eno spent a brief period earlier in his long career in Germany, exploring the then burgeoning and developing German electronic music scene. A lot of what later became more electronic British pop, such as Depeche Mode, Soft Cell and Ultravox, came out of that exploration. Here Eno combines his wonderful 'non-linear' approach to lyric writing with the spare minimalism of Moebius & Roedelius' sonic palette. "Broken Head"'s imagery is a striking look at a de-centred mind grasping on to elements it randomly perceives to cobble together some kind of 'self' or 'world picture'. But it's efforts are skewed.
I've added a second link to a remix ( "Automat Rework" ) for it's incredible punch that still keeps to the feeling of the original. Eno's lyrics are even clearer in the newer version.

There are a grand total of 29 cities in the United States that begin with the letter Q. So he decided to go with a fun sounding name and located Quartzsite, Arizona with a population of 2400.
Quartzsite's current location was the site of a waterhole from 1863 to the 1880s and was later a stage station, called Tyson's Wells, along the La Paz - Wikenburg Road on Tyson Wash, in what was then Yuma County, in the newly created Arizona Territory. It was about 20 miles from the Colorado River steamboat landing of La Paz and 25 miles from the landing of Erhenburg from 1866. The next stop was 25 miles to the east at Desert Station.
On the flipside of Internation Falls being the Icebox of the Nation, Quartzsite is one of the hottest places in the United States and has recorded temperatures as high as 122 °F or 50.0 °C on July 28, 1995. Rainfall is under 5 inches per year!
Quartzsite is a popular recreational vehicle camping area for winter visitors. The Rubber Tramp Rendezvous, an annual gathering of vandwellers, takes place in January. Gem and mineral shows, swap meet shows are very popular tourist attractions, attracting about 1.5 million people annually.
Joanne's Gum Gallery in Quartzsite is a quirky and unique museum dedicated to gum wrappers collected since the 1940s. The collection, started by Joanne Brunet, features over 4,000 packs of gum displayed in 100 cases inside a small pink building behind her home. The museum operates by appointment only, so visitors should call ahead to ensure access.

Consolidated B-24-H Liberator 41-29418 was originally named as ‘Turnip Termite.’ Its original nose art was painted by Clayton Hutsell at the 486th. Bomb Group at USAAF Station 174 Sudbury in Suffolk, but the aircraft was transferred to USAAF Station 115 Shipdham in Norfolk before he could put the name of 'Turnip Termite' on it. It was renamed 'Pappy’s Chillun' at the 44th. Bomb Group.
41-29418, coded QK -?, crashed on the 21st. April 1944 with the loss of all crew except the pilot and co-pilot. The main body of the wreckage still lies in the lake at Taverham Mills.
The aircraft was on its way on a bombing mission to the German town of Zwickau. During assembly, five miles northwest of Norwich, and one mile northeast of Ringland Hills, the aircraft was climbing into formation, traveling at 155 to 160 mph through overcast, in severe icing conditions. When it reached 14,000 feet, the aircraft lurched violently and started swerving to the right. The pilots had no control over the aircraft as it swerved back to the left, and then started to spin tightly toward the ground. The plane then turned onto its back and the right-wing and tail were torn off by the violent manoeuvres. The two pilots were thrown into the top of the cockpit, and when the cabin ripped apart, they were thrown clear of the wreckage.
No definite statement can be made as to the cause of the accident, but it was the opinion of the investigating board that the airplane picked up too much ice, was forced into a stall, and from there into a spin when it fell apart. The aircraft was heavily loaded with eight 1,000 lb. bombs and 2,700 gallons of fuel. Another aircraft, flown by Lt. Dine of 506th. Bomb Squadron, experienced the same icing conditions. It went into a spin, but the pilots finally managed to recover control at 4,000 feet.
The two survivors from this accident, 2nd. Lieutenant's Havens and Del Grande were taken to the hospital immediately. Havens suffered severe injuries when he landed in a tree, fractured his left ankle, and his spine. He spent some time at the 231st. Hospital. He did not return to the 44th. Bomb Group. Del Grande seriously injured his ankle when he landed. He flew no more missions for the 44th. Bomb Group and was transferred to the 70th. RCD on 10th. December 1944, for transfer back to the United States. However, it appears that Del Grande recovered and was transferred to the 93rd. Bomb Group, where he completed his tour with them.
On 21st. April 2001, 57 years after the crash, this memorial was dedicated at Taverham Mill.
