I had a tough decision to make this morning - whether to work, or take the morning off and have a play with my new toy...

I haven't given up on Canon, nor will I be selling off my 'big stuff', but I had come to realise that at last there was a bridge camera which might not frustrate the %^&* out of me. And the advantages of a (relatively) small and light all-in-one are obvious. Actually I've been a bit slow on the uptake, as the Sony RX10 MkIV has been available for a year but I didn't realise until recently just how good it was.

It arrived yesterday, and this morning the sun shone as if to say "Come on Steve, get up to Greylake and give it a try."

This was a sacred moment that I was lucky to capture - snow covered mt.st.helens illuminated by the moon light with cloud inversion in the valley.

This year in 2022, we've seen a very weird spring season because snow extended well into May here in Washington. The long winter inspired me to capture some unique landscape to feature the snow and St.Helens was on top of my list. This volcano erupted in 1980 and part of its rim collapsed from that eruption, which makes it the most unique volcano in Washington. I've hiked up to its rim before, but from a photography point of view, I think the best view is to capture its entirety from the ridge north of it.

To plan this shot, I was basically following the weather forecast and waiting for the ideal conditions to align: 1. A lot of fresh snow 2. Ideal moon phase and weather 3. Cloud Inversion. #1 and #2 are relatively easy to get because I can basically watch webcam and weather forecast and decide when to go. #3 is the hardest because I have to predict when cloud inversion will happen. I learned about the theory behind this natural phenomena, and closely monitored all the related parameters, including wind speed, pressure, humidity, dew point etc and finally I found a short window that all these conditions might align. I decided to take my chance and drove 4.5 hours from home to this spot. It was rainy and foggy on the night when I arrived and I started to doubt about my decision.I spent an hour digging a flat platform from dense snow to set up my tent, and went to bed hoping tomorrow morning magic would happen. Indeed, at around 4:30am when I woke up, I saw clear sky and then I rushed to this ridge and witnessed this moment. It made me speechless.

Decisions, decisions,

Like so many decisions we each make everyday, many minor, and a few crucial, with available facts and intuition, picking a course and moving ahead with faith and a sense of adventure into a future that is not always clear. Choose wisely!

The title?

I'm currently looking to move to another camera system. My Olympus gear has served me well but I'm now looking to Nikon as it should help me in low light where I've struggled a lot in the past.

Trying to choose between two cameras is rather hard and I've spent the last few days mulling and mulling. I'll come to a decision soon enough but it's a very hard choice to make.

The title is also apt for this picture too. Two girls in a bar but I've gone through different crops, colours and tones. All have worked quite well but trying to get 'the' image has been a long time coming. No doubt I'll change my mind again - doh.

Where to next in the historic central district of Florence, Italy.

We have reached an area called Tunusua that we need to cross to get to the next valley. Tunusua translates to 'the backside' or 'the east side'. It was reassuring to see a sign, the first one on our hike. I think it directs us to the left skirting a wide basin in front of us. The basin was filled with turquoise meltwater lakes. www.flickr.com/photos/michaelandanita/4226334061/in/album... To get to this point we had experienced post-holing, an unpredictable event that happened with increasing frequency. Sometimes our legs plunged so deeply into the slushy snow that it was hard to pull a foot back out. www.flickr.com/photos/michaelandanita/4227105016/in/album... The heavy snow felt like setting concrete encasing our legs. With worsening conditions ahead we realised that it was not our time to tempt fate. We decided to retrace our steps to terra firma. The view looks east from Disko Island across Disko Bay to the Greenland mainland. On Google satellite view this area is snow-free containing just two smallish lakes in the basin ahead. It had been an unusual year with heavy spring snowfalls just a month before our arrival.

THIS IS THE MASK I LIKE.

The new Covid rules have been activated since May 1st: it is practically a goodbye to the green pass, while indoor masks are still mandatory in some places.

Green certification is almost nowhere to be used anymore and the obligation to wear a mask indoors has been significantly reduced. In short, there are still some rules, but it is the first real attempt to return to normalcy in forced coexistence with the virus. Right or wrong, in fact, the government - aligned with what has been done by other countries - has decided to remove practically all restrictions despite the fact that the number of cases is still very high. Of course, we know that - especially thanks to vaccines - those who fall ill are much less likely to end up in intensive care or die, but many experts continue to have doubts about the decision to eliminate all the rules.

This is an example of miniature drama playing out in millions of flowers this time of year. This Goldenrod Crab Spider is making a dietary decision that could be life-altering. "To eat, or not to eat this plaster bee family member?"

In a decision that was reminiscent of Season One, Maxine decided to bring Dannika back for a second chance. And while some drama waves rippled in the BFF mansion over Maxine’s decision, it was nothing compared to what went down during the TTYN ceremony. Leah and Alia got into it over Alia’s attitude during the Q&A. All the while Dannika and La'Raesa were at each others throats when asked to critique each other's work. Ultimately La'Raesa's laissez-faire demeanor and lackluster photo got her sent home. 13 girls still remain, who will be eliminated next?
