Ophrys apifera, known in Europe as the bee orchid, is a perennial herbaceous plant of the family Orchidaceae. It serves as an example of sexually deceptive pollination and floral mimicry, as well as of a highly selective and highly evolved plant–pollinator relationship.
Dames Rocket were in full bloom in my local park, Richfield County Park, a part of the Genesee County Parks. They were everywhere, for sure. My thanks to Jim Hill for setting me straight as to how this deceptive beauty differs from Phlox. This one is an invasive species that is not so nice.
These are the final three photographs of my series on the Lake St Clair region. The World Heritage listed area is a breathtaking natural environment that still retains that largely untamed sense of wilderness. No matter the weather conditions it is always a pleasure to feel the presence of the natural world.
Here we see the Hugel Ridge that lies between the summit and the range that ends with the pyramid-like peak of Little Hugel. (I'll show you the full range with Little Hugel in the link below). Mt Hugel is not a difficult mountain to climb if you don't mind exposed climbing, but appearances can be deceptive. Lack of preparation or respect for the weather up there can kill you. I think this photograph shows that.
… with the bright autumnal colours. But I found this as I was looking through folders of shots I took during Covid lockdown. Needless to say this was taken in our garden - as that was as far as our world extended! And the shot was taken in the Spring - to further confuse me! But I thought it compensated for the sunless grey that has been our autumn here!
Happy Bokeh Wednesday! 😊

15–16 coloured and monochrome photographs that capture the quiet resilience of fringe fishing communities in India. The choice of black and white is deliberate: it mirrors the sombre skies, the muted tones of the riverbanks, and the subdued rhythm of lives tethered to survival. The colored ones are a tad less serious but hopefully still convey the story line of the coracel fishing.
Each frame is a meditation on endurance, portraying men and women who must wrest their daily meal from uncertain waters.
At the heart of this story is the coracle—a humble yet ingenious craft. Circular in shape, it is woven from bamboo strips, sealed with tar, and lined with a plastic sheet. Its design is deceptively simple: light enough to be carried with one hand, yet strong enough to withstand the currents. With just a single paddle, the fisherman can maneuver it with surprising agility, gliding across the water like a leaf carried by the wind.
This photograph lingers on the moment of launch. The fisherman, weathered by sun and rain, lowers the coracle into the river. His movements are practiced, almost ritualistic, honed by years of necessity.
The water lies steady and deceptiely calm, reflecting the stark contrast of sky and boat, man and livelihood.
The scene becomes timeless—an echo of generations who have lived and labored by these waters.
Together, these images hopefuolly speak of dignity in hardship, of lives lived on the margins yet rich in tradition and skill. The sombre weather is not just backdrop—it is metaphor, underscoring the precariousness of existence and the strength required to carry on.

Fairy slipper orchids (aka Calypso orchids) spotlighted by a light fleck shining through a subalpine aspen forest. Every year I make a pilgrimage to this site in the early summer to catch these elusive beauties. Their abundance and date of appearance vary from year to year. The flowers only last a few days before wilting. This year we were fortunate to catch a large number in full bloom.
Fairy slipper orchids lure pollinators by producing a scent that mimics nectar producing flowers, although the orchid itself lacks nectar. Their scientific name commemorates Calypso, a Greek nymph who lured Odysseus to her Island so he could be her husband.

I swear by God that today I could not get up from the hunger. There is no food. Even if someone has money, there is nothing in the market to even purchase.”
Meanwhile, Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif broke down in tears during a live broadcast outside Al-Shifa Hospital as a woman nearby collapsed from hunger. “People are collapsing in the streets from hunger—just falling right there from extreme starvation,” he said. In response, an Israeli military spokesperson jeered at Al-Sharif on social media, saying it was “nothing but crocodile tears that comes as part of a deceptive and staged Hamas performance.”
A total of 86 Palestinians, including 76 children, have died of hunger and malnutrition since the war began in what the health ministry on Sunday called “a silent massacre.”
We stayed a few days in the hotel just to the right. I made it a habit of getting up well before dawn and prowling the streets for photographic opportunities.
This scene is a bit deceptive because I was actually not alone. No motorized traffic is permitted but between about 5:30 and 6:00 trash is being collected by a swarm of golf carts who ride like kamikazes down these narrow lanes. Here, I patiently waited for a safe moment to record this memory.
The paste in the centre of this button may look red, but if you turn it a little in the light it appears blue. The button is made from brass and dates back to the 1890s.
You can probably tell that I'm lacking inspiration at the moment because I've reverted to my vintage buttons. I'm missing flowers and can't wait for Spring to bring my garden back to life. :)
The impression is deceptive. At first sight it seems that this flamingo is asleep, but he has everything under control every single minute.
For such large, almost ungainly-looking creatures, bison are surprisingly nimble and deceptively fast. In Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
This location is amazing. I timed my trip to arrive at low tide. Checking the tidal charts before I left home, I established that this is as low as the tide ever gets.
The ocean was flat and calm. Seemingly out of nowhere, a series of large waves would pick-up and crash against this and the other "shelves" in the area. There were times when I looked on in amazement and waves only a meter high would crash into the rocks, sending water, 6, 7, 8 meters into the air, such was the force. The mind boggled what it would be like in a storm! Even with an extremely low tide and flat seas, you can see the water constantly flowing across the shelf. It's definitely a place to take photos with a friend watching the conditions around you. I always do photography on my own, but this time I insisted that a family member came along for the ride.
The Ministry of Peace, paradoxically responsible for war, illustrates 1984's theme of deceptive government control.
Despite its benign name, the Ministry focuses on developing methods and weapons for ongoing war, reflecting the Party's manipulation of truth.
Its role in disseminating war news underscores the Party's strategy of using perpetual conflict to unify and control Oceania's populace.

Kinda lame for this week's MM theme, but I couldn't come up with anything more creative. But I saw the shining grass in the morning and thought water and light were creating an extremely pretty deception.

Ahhh, my dear friend Mike (Kap’n’Kaos) defined this photograph perfectly when he said it was "Deceptively Warm". He was indeed correct. This was taken on a cold, frosty morning! Please visit Mike's photostream. You will be more than pleased with his talent as a photographer.
NOTE:THANK YOU FRIENDS for your continual support of my photography, your lovely comments and encouragement and most of all for your enduring friendship.
Deceptive
You’d really think he’d be nicer
Than his fire breathing cousin
in America
He can really burn you up, though.
With his poutine breath
And he doesn’t care about your high rent
Or how hungry you are
He just wants to breathe
But every exhalation means
Danger for nearby humans
Just trying to get home.
There is one way to defeat him.
Bring him some Aero Bars and
a Double Double
Sing him your favorite song by The Sadies
And he’ll be calm and lovable
Just like everyone else on the streets
Trying to make their way
Through this weary urban abyss.
Besides, we’re all a little looney.

The Cloister
The Cloisters at Salisbury surround the largest garth, or green space, in Britain, measuring 80 acres in size. The cloister architecture is deceptively clean, almost spare, with beautifully restrained Gothic vaulting. Visitors are allowed to walk into the garth, and enjoy the views up to the glorious spire above.
....... I had posted an initial shot of this odonata earlier and then never got back to posting the rest of the series. Looking back at it now, I am not so sure my ID as a green darner was correct. The more I look at it
the more I am wondering if it might be an Eastern pondhawk. With a new emergent the colors can sometimes be deceptive. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Meerkats.
Suricata suricatta.
Don’t be fooled by their innocent lovable looks because looks can be deceptive.
Unless you belong to their pack then you will always be treated with great suspicion.
Belonging to the mongoose family meerkats are a hardy creature that has a diet consisting of fruit and vegetables, grubs, insects, small rodents, eggs, lizards and poisonous scorpions and snakes.
Amazingly the meerkat when confronted by a scorpion will bite the tail off the scorpion stinger thus rendering it safe.
The scorpion has lost its ability to deliver venom to the meerkat.
However venom still exists in the exoskeleton and the meerkat avoids this venom by rubbing the scorpion in the sand which removes and remaining venom.
Large dark patches around their eyes reduce the amount of glare from the sun which enables the creatures to see birds miles way. Sight is the meerkats most developed sense.
A burrowing creature that is constantly digging the eyes are protected by a membrane that offers protection to the eyes.
Without water a human would have a life expectancy of 3-5 days. So being a desert dweller (native to Africa) it would be assumed that meerkats would not survive without water.
This is not the case as meerkats gain all the moisture they require to survive from the insects and grubs that they consume.
Meerkats are range in length of between 25-cm and have an average weight of 731grams.
A social animal meerkats live in large groups called a gang or a mob and each gang or mob can contain up to 40 individuals and whilst they spend a lot of time playing and grooming one another they can sleep in their burrows for 10-12 hours per day.

I come here every day, for the coffee of course… but not only. In this well-known place, I know exactly what to expect: a burning hot coffee, and a barista naked under his apron, even hotter than the coffee itself, fully aware of the effect he has. I smile, play with my posture, take my time. I play with my look: fitted skirt, soft knit, a deceptively innocent attitude. Here, the coffee is strong, the atmosphere even stronger… and that’s exactly why I keep coming back. ☕🔥😏

For Sale at Amerhidl (Skoura oasis) ! (needs some work)
The oasis of Skoura's claim to fame is its long line of kasbahs along two seasonal rivers. Its appearance may be deceptive to many, being so long, it may recall images of a forest more than a huge oasis. Still it is even larger, most of the oasis runs north from the road.
The most impressive among the many attractive kasbahs is the Amerhidl, dating back to the 17th century. Its design and grand size made it fit to illustrate the back of the Moroccan 50 dirham note.

A calm looking long exposure of Trwyn Du Lighthouse at Penmon Point. The image is quite deceptive as the weather that morning was very aggressive with high winds and crashing waves.
The first lighthouse was errected in 1838 shortly after a ship ran aground causing 130 people to loose their lives. The ship that sank was called the Rothsay Castle
and sank in 1831.
The present lighthouse is 29 metres tall & was designed by James Walker & built in 1835-1838.
The lamp was converted to solarpower in 1996.At present the Lighthouse has a 15,000 candela light that can be seen 12 nautical miles away & a 178 kilogram fog bell that sounds once every 30 seconds.
Thank you for taking the time to view my work and as always I appreciate all your feedback and any faves you are kind enough to leave. Have a great week :)
Blocked and ready for a new lease on life, the Holly Depot is ready for the short distance move away from the tracks. Originally built in 1885 to replace the wooden one that had burned, the depot had been on CN (GTW) property and was unoccupied and starting to fall on hard times, and after some back and forth with the railroad and the Vilage of Holly (and some deceptive moves by one party), the depot was sold to the village, and will be restored to its original glory. Just a couple days prior to the move, CN L508 heads south past the unusually precarious high flying depot. A couple days after this photo was taken, the depot was safely moved and was set into it's new permanent home, ending a chapter in the building's history, and starting a new one.
The Sun begins to crest above the last layer of cloud cover. The tide continues to deceptively creep up the coastline to reclaim it's Domain for the day.
While it looks deceptively pleasant, it was actually quite brisk and windy. A complicated focus stack was required to get the flowers to be sharp with them blowing all about. This year it seems the flowers will get a break from the annual crowds.
