What look like white paving stones are very deceptive. As soon as you step on the white pieces of ice the begin to slide and shatter. underneath is a very hard sheet of ice. Even my ice grippers on my shoes did no good. Once you begin to stumble you are going to go down. As you try to regain your footing on the top ice you break through to the super slippery layer below. I would imagine I looked pretty comical. Like a character from a Saturday morning cartoon. Fortunately my camera did not suffer my fate.

The name of this panorama is deceptive, the road turns to gravel not far from where this shot was taken. Well, at least it's not all gravel, so I guess it really is the road less gravelled. Apart from that, the rural scenery is easy on the eye and quite close to where I live..

Looking south along Seamens Beach, the longest of the three beaches at Hyams Beach, Australia. Taken just before a rain shower. The waves look small but it is deceptive as some were about 4m high. The naval training college, HMAS Creswell is just out of view.

Thank you for visiting. I appreciate the faves and kind comments very much.

"The steel and glass-dominated building ensemble includes the oval forum, which sees itself as part of the public urban space and is therefore not separated from the surrounding streets. The roof is meant to symbolise one of Japan's landmarks, the sacred Mount Fujisan. According to Japanese belief, the kami live in the mountains; due to the lack of mountains in Berlin, an artificial residence was built for the kami so that Sony would also be protected by them in Europe."

Under this link you can read the whole text of the Cony Centre. Highly recommended.

I also dedicate this photo to the Ukrainians and the hope for peace in the near future. War must be outlawed and the instigators punished.

Dear friends, it seems we have our "freedom" back, a deceptive freedom, please continue to wear a mask indoors and stay healthy. 🇺🇦💙💛🇪🇺

May not look like it but spring has finally arrived. This scene will be markedly different in a week as evidence of green is appearing everywhere in response to consistently warmer temperatures.

You often come across them while hiking through the Dolomites and if you never been there before you think this is a road.

But appearances deceptive because after winter, this is a wildly churning river during the period when all the melt water rushes down from the mountain peaks, and to slow down the force of the churning water, they have placed large boulders and stones in the the bed of this dried-up river to slow down the force of the water so that it cannot flow with brute force towards the valleys.

Debris glaciers are a well-known phenomenon on the edges of the peaks and one of such glacier is visible on the left side behind the row of trees.

The water flowing down takes rocks and other stone debris with it on its way down.

In fact, their presence of this debris is a sign of the continuous erosion taking place in the Dolomites.

...ahead and above.

It's quite deceptive, that is a steep hill and the hedge at the bottom is taller than me - which isn't saying much. I spotted the trees vaguely through my 10x monocular but had no idea the sheep were there.

On the fringes of a densely crowded marketplace in the Guatemalan highlands, a reverent silence looms over the ivory gate of the General Cemetery. Beyond its deceptively sterile exterior, hundreds of vibrant tombstones pepper the hillside.

To outsiders, the passionate display of color may seem incongruent with loss of life — but according to indigenous Maya tradition, honoring the dead encourages the living to make peace with the inevitability of death.

One of the aspects of photography that fascinates me is when you come back and take a long and hard look at your photos- Which ones stand out? To me, the answer is often the deceptively simple composition that somehow draws you in.

Hopefully, I've managed to do that here: Draw you in :)

hold still, my love!

let me freeze in time

that elusive essence

of all that you are!

let me pan from head to toe

all those fleeting memories

that envelope you like a halo!

--that heady mix of honey and cinnamon

as you say into the phone “hello!”

--that dainty dimple

and the happy curl of your ruby lips.

is it my breath that sways

those curls framing your cheeks?

for years have we shared,

for ages have we walked

the long road together,

stopping, but for mere moments,

to fight our little fights

and talk our little talks,

to press our hands together

and smile

at things small and beautiful,

at some rare memory.

hold still, don’t breathe!

don’t sway

those delicious mountains and valleys

where often our rivulets

joined in a torrent of frenzy!

where in the labyrinth

of time and space

did we first meet?

do you remember?

you are my memory

and I am yours.

but memories are ephemeral

and fleeting and deceptive.

so let me freeze them in time

before you and I

fade away.

There is light and beauty up there , that no shadow can touch, likewise all that seems may not be good, what is good is always beautiful .. don't get fooled by the appearances that can be deceptive , look deepest and the true beauty will reveal herself .... what i am saying is this beautiful island in Tokushima lives a hundred of cats and snakes ,only few older fisherman , some are alone and some are old couples and houses becomes derelick because of few population lives in this island

To the north of the Wiehengebirge hills there is an extensive moor area, the Great Peat Bog. Despite the gray weather with light sleet, we didn't miss the opportunity to go on an extensive hiking tour through the area today. It was amazing to see how strongly the strong colors of the vegetation stood out against the gray sky. Hille, Ostwestfalen, Germany

I'm continually amazed at the songbirds that winter over in the mountains of Colorado. They are a deceptively sturdy, hardy, and beautiful addition to our winter wildlife.

The sunshine in this shot is deceptive - it was actually blowing a hoolie and it was a major challenge to keep the camera on target. I didn't get many keepers but I used the usual technique of taking hundreds in the hope that a few would come out ok!

I got that new Skinnery skin and it's GORGEOUS. If you're a redhead, get to Kustom9 straight away.

The rose is loved, without a doubt,

Nature is a wonderful creation.

Inhaling the fragrance is wonderful,

On the petals of her satin,

Dew drops are playing.

And there are thorns hiding somewhere.

Deceptive rose tenderness,

When you rip it off carelessly.

Symbols and secrets are hidden in it,

Where the rose is, there is a declaration of love,

Innocence, loyalty, purity.

After all, the rose is the beauty of the world!

A deceptively small section of the Common.. It has hosted many events including fairs, bonfires and the 'famous' Billy Smart's Circus!

Mums taking the babes for a tour of the neighbourhood. Taken on a cloudy evening as the sun was just down.

The photo is deceptive, flattening out depth - the drop from where it was taken down to the sheep is too steep to walk down and would have to be descended sitting.

Carry on to the left in the field where the sheep are, about 300 yards down the hill and you are in our garden.

These two characters live next door and we've become good friends during the lockdown period. They were hatched and raised by my neighbour and they crave human company especially a stroke of the head and a cuddle. In this case at least, appearances are very deceptive!

My husband is holding on to a tree with one hand and my backpack attached to me with the other, as I am leaning out over the edge to get this shot.

Blue Pool, also known as Tamolitch Pool, is where the McKenzie River seeps to the surface through underground lava fields that flowed across the landscape eons ago.

The water is so pure that it’s eerily deceptive. When water is that pure, the depth is often misjudged. For anyone who has visited Blue Pool will agree that the water only appears to be, at most, five feet deep. The rocks that rest on the bottom of the pool’s earthen floor seem to be so close that you can almost touch them by merely sticking your arm into the water. The true depth of Blue Pool is 30 feet!

The water from Blue Pool comes from underground where it has been purified by the rocks and sediment underneath the surface of the Earth. It’s constantly in circulation from its underground source. This also explains why the water is so cold; it comes fresh from underground. When water is that cold, it makes it difficult for organisms to survive.

The Tamolitch Falls, now a seasonal waterfall, once had a constant flow on the McKenzie River. In the 1960s, water was diverted for hydroelectric use from the stream above the falls; that section of the stream, as well as the falls, ceased to flow except during periods of heavy runoff or when water was diverted from the dams upstream. When this is not the case, the stream goes underground and now emerges below the falls. At the base of the former falls is the Tamolitch Blue Pool.

I have a photo of the Tamolitch waterfall in my waterfalls album. You only get to see the falls at certain times of the years. It was worth slogging through slush and snow to see the waterfall dropping into the pool.

The flower symbol of freshness, purity, simplicity, of the innocence of youth and courtly love, but also the flower of the deceptive game of illusion "loves me or loves me not." In fact, the petals of the daisy are odd numbers and if you start to detach the first petal with "loves me,” for a little romantic deception of mathematics, the last petal will necessarily give another "loves me" answer ... Here is the secret of the innocent deception of the sweet and the innocent daisy ...

It is believed that this bridge was built in the year 1860, and was commissioned by a knight named Friedrich Herrmann, who belonged to the local town of Kromlau.

Nestled in the forest of Kromlauer, the Rakotzbrücke or the ‘Devil’s Bridge’ is believed to be a miraculous and dangerous marvel that was apparently, according to local folktales, built by Satan himself. The bridge was built using local stones, and completed by hand to form a perfect half-circle. When the water reflects the bridge, it is deceptive as it gives the illusion of a perfect circle upon the stagnant glassy water of the lake.

According to local legends, the knight who built the bridge called upon the Devil for help. He is believed to have convinced the Devil to help him finish building the bridge, on the condition that the Devil would have the first living thing to cross the bridge for himself. The builders supposedly agreed to this condition and the Devil helped them finish building the bridge. However, they tricked the Devil by making a hen or a goat cross the bridge first, which angered the Devil. The Devil killed the animal before leaving, and the builders were saved. However, one of the legends say that the builder sacrificed himself to the Devil to save the community

Captured at Vandaloor, I am still wondering how I spotted this guy, he was so fast and so deceptive he moves an inch and you won't be able to spot him that easily. My camera was crying to get the focus right and my meter almost failed every other time and the exposure was my biggest challenge, but still I know this shot is worth all the troubles that we went through. Hope you all agree with me, I dedicate this shot to my friend Surendar @ Chittappa who is celebrating his birthday today, happy birthday chittappa. Thanks for all your comments and fav

Stockholm's public library. The library has been described as the physical manifestation of a transitionary period in both the rationale of its designer and the shifting values of European architecture; the ultimate result a deceptively complex synthesis of styles presented in a visually straightforward package: the fading influence of Neoclassicism juxtaposed against the emergence of Rationalism. Brilliant!

To call hip hop “poetry” is to praise it, to commend it as insightful or artful. To reject hip hop as poetry is to condemn it as shallow or poorly written. On both sides of the debate, then, “poetry” often acts as an honorific term. ... In contrast, very few hip hop artists do not rhyme.

Descending the stairs at Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island. I can't say enough positive about this place. I think it's possibly the most breathtaking natural scenery that I know of in New England. I always enjoy this place immensely.

However, the weather was deceptively hot and humid. I'd rented a bike to get here, but with almost 90 degree temperatures this turned out to be very challenging.

Breaking news : another peaceful day on the coast at North Norfolk - sea, sand and sky. Looks can be deceptive and over the years the RNLI at Cromer and Sheringham have saved countless lives.

With the rising of dawn the early fog covers the carnage that is the Toutle River Valley, the rocky cliff sides devoid of soil that was blasted away in an instant forty one years ago, the hummocks (large pieces of mountain) strewn about below, the boles of trees that were once a rain forest.

At this serene and chilly moment all was calm, no steam, no earthquakes, just me and the volatile young lady in a moment of repose.

Longing is it that nourishes our soul and not the fulfillment ; and the meaning of life is a journey, not the destination . For each answer is deceptive , every fulfillment melts our hands , and the goal is no longer once it has been achieved .

It was taken on the northwestern edge of Spitsbergen, in the Svalbard archipelago, not far from the receding snout of the Aavatsmarkbreen glacier — a place where the Arctic breathes in whispers and fractures. The date was late August, the season of deceptive warmth when the midnight sun hovers low and the ice begins to bleed.

The formation in the photograph is not solid rock, as some might think at first glance, but the collapsed mouth of a subglacial tunnel, formed by meltwater carving through the glacier’s underbelly. Years of pressure and refreezing sculpted those contoured ridges — layers of ancient snowfall compressed into dense, cerulean ice. The faint cyan glow inside the cave isn’t artificial; it’s scattered light refracting through air bubbles trapped millennia ago when mammoths still roamed the Siberian steppe.

The air inside smells faintly metallic, like cold iron and salt. It’s utterly still, except for the slow, rhythmic crack of thawing ice — a sound like distant gunfire, echoing across the bay. On calm days, the sea around the ice gate mirrors the sky in a sheet of mercury grey. On others, the wind funnels through the arch, producing a low hum, as if the glacier itself were exhaling.

Scientists who mapped this region in 2023 used drones to capture melt patterns here. They found that the ice retreated 37 meters in just two years — a rate almost double that of the previous decade. Beneath this particular overhang, water temperatures measured 1.4°C above the long-term average, enough to weaken the internal structure. Within a few seasons, this cathedral of ice will collapse into the fjord and drift into oblivion, another silent casualty of warming currents from the West Spitsbergen Current, which brings Atlantic heat ever closer to the pole.
