We still had a little time to kill after the Hollywood Reservoir, so we did something we've never even considered before. We actually went down and wandered around downtown Los Angeles.
I've long had this notion that because Los Angeles as a whole is so decentralized, downtown Los Angeles wasn't really a place. That's not really true, as this is as much a place as any downtown core. Like downtown Chicago, this is where a lot of people in banking and finance work, and I feel like there are a lot of architects down here. There's a jewelers row and offices associated with international commerce and diplomacy. There are lawyers. The high powered law firm of McKenzie, Brackman, Chaney and Kuzak operates out of a building somewhere off to the left. Hundreds of detectives have offices scattered around here. I think Tony Stark has an office building here somewhere.
Because I'm me, my main focus was on the big, white, cylindrical building seen toward the center of this image. That's the U.S. Bank Building, which at 1,018-feet-tall comes in as the second tallest building in Los Angeles. Were it in Chicago or New York, it would be either city's fifth tallest building. Which means you'd notice it, no matter where they put it. Originally named Library Tower, this building was completed in 1989, and I tend to think of it as the first structure to make the Los Angeles skyline recognizable. Before this, everything tall was a box.
As such, the building tends to stand out in disaster movies, which in the U.S. always feature either Los Angeles or New York. (Chicago's had some recent attention in the Transformers franchise.) I saw this building get nuked with the rest of Los Angeles is a really disturbing dream sequence in Terminator 2. (Needless to say, if disaster movies give you anxiety, don't hit any of these links.) I've seen it destroyed in massive earthquakes in the amazingly scientifically inaccurate 2012 and San Andreas movies. You can just see it getting wiped out for an instant by tornadoes in the also scientifically inaccurate Day After Tomorrow.
But most iconic for me is Independence Day, when the building is ground zero for one of three simultaneous alien attacks on the United States. Presumably, similarly iconic structures are being destroyed at roughly the same time in about 20 someodd cities all over the world, but the movie only shows the destruction in Los Angeles, New York, and Washington. As such, I've always referred to this as the Independence Day Building.
Mrs. Kobeto Ouihame, Community Relay speaks during an exchange with the UNICEF team, Kobéla convergence commune, Nzérékoré region in Guinea. UNICEF Guinea country office in collaboration with UNICEF WCARO regional office and UNICEF New York headquarters, conducted a field mission in October 2022 to review the status of the effective implementation of primary health care and the Child Friendly Communities (CFC) initiative in Nzérékoré region, Guinea.
The administrative region of Nzérékoré, located in the southeast of Guinea, 954 km from the capital Conakry, includes 6 health districts and has an estimated total population of approximately 2 million inhabitants. The epidemiological profile of this region is characterized by outbreaks of epidemics, including cases of measles, Ebola virus disease, Lassa hemorrhagic fever, and Marburg. Over the past two decades, the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene in Guinea has been committed to making maternal, newborn, and child health a priority. However, insufficient progress has been made based on the results of the DHS from 1999 to 2018. There has been a slight decrease in neonatal mortality rates from 48 to 32 per 1,000 live births, infant and child mortality from 177 per 1,000 to 111 deaths per 1,000 live births, and infant mortality from 98 deaths to 67 per 1,000 in 2018. Only 27% of children under 5 years of age sleep under Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs). 55% of children under 5 with diarrhea received treatment with Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and only 22% with ORS-Zinc. Only 83% of children with Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) received treatment or counseling and 30% on the same day. Only 24% of children aged 12-23 months received all vaccinations with persistent measles outbreaks. Low rate of exclusive breastfeeding 33%. High prevalence of stunting at 30%, 9% are emaciated or acutely malnourished and 16% are underweight. Low level of sanitation, 52% of households have an improved sanitation facility. The Ministry of Health's main strategy for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is based on primary health care. In 2018, UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene (MSHP) operationalized this new policy in 40 communes known as convergence communes with the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Decentralization (MATD).

UNDP ART Communication Officer Ola Kobeissi interviews women at the at the vocational training and rehabilitation Center in Haret Hreik. UNDP supported its establishment in partnership with the Swedish government in 2011 together with the Municipality of Haret Hreik. The primary objective of the training center is to alleviate unemployment and generate better income for the population of Beirut Southern Suburbs, a densely populated region comprising nearly 30% of the entire Lebanese population and confronting major socioeconomic challenges , the most adverse being unemployment and lack of job opportunities.
“Some 1,484 beneficiaries have received training since the centre was opened, of whom the majority are women,” said the center’s director Ali Mustafa. The center holds classes for women in agro-food processing, cooking, IT skills, crafts, and beauty, among other subjects, and there are other courses on electric installations and mobile maintenance that are tailored specifically for men. Each of these sixty-hour courses lasts for nearly three months.

The bus system in Panama City works on a decentralized system - a license is issued for the route, and the drivers purchase and maintain their own bus. Sometimes several routes and buses are license by one operator who then hires several driver/conductor teams. Some operators take quite a bit of pride in their buses, decorating them top to bottom with graffiti, ribbons, lights, mascots, murals,...

Distributed Marketing systems, in the broader ecosystem of Marketing Resource Management, isn’t a simple shoe-in to solve for the challenges of decentralized marketing organizations. And perhaps especially due to the relatively young nature of the industry, both the technology, and the partner selected, need to be the proper fit to meet the challenges of such an organization head-on.
I thought about this while reading an article recently published by Adweek titled The Trouble with Back-Ends: Why Publishers can’t Publish on the Web.
The article highlights the high-probability of failure for Content Management System (or CMS) installations, even recounting a $20 million debacle at BusinessWeek that purportedly led to the publication’s financial demise. The giant takeaway from the article? There is no silver-bullet…..Every publisher has different needs for how they manage their content online.
Why do so many get it wrong? The lucky few were lucky….or they had enough foresight to think through all business requirements, and how the organization can grow with the platform to which they commit. For the unlucky? Over time, millions of dollars are invested – both in hard-costs and labor – which inevitably gets tossed aside once the white flag goes up.
So how can a decentralized marketing organization avoid the same pitfalls publications are making when choosing their CMS systems? There are a few key points that come to mind helping decision makers at decentralized marketing entities choose the proper distributed marketing partner.
Software versus Service – Does Your Partner Provide Both?
Perhaps the greatest point to look for in your partner: to what extent are they strictly a software company versus a marketing services company? How does your potential partner make a living? Let me explain why this is important.
Surely – no matter what type of company you look at, they must build, configure and maintain their own technology. The difference is software companies will license you their software (they make money on the software). A marketing services company, on the other hand, will provide you the software as a means to provide services to the field (they make money on the marketing services behind it).
All things the same…..which one is better? It depends.
Without a doubt, the number one rule in running a successful distributed marketing strategy to properly support decentralized marketing initiatives is putting people behind those initiatives. This includes strong Account Management (to be guiding forces of best practices through the use of software) and strong field customer service (knowledgeable experts on the phone to guide end-users of the software and preach local marketing best practices). Typically, a marketing services organization will provide much stronger Account Support when compared to a pure-play software company (whose Account support may be non-existent).
Large Fortune 100 enterprises may prefer the pure-software route because they want to operationally staff and manage the entire initiative – including the whole vendor marketing execution chain behind the system. On the other hand, organizations that feel it would be better served outsourced, or simply don’t have the resources to add another operational layer, often require strong account management.
We often like to quote a famous line from Field of Dreams – “If you build it, they will come.” In reality, nothing can be further from the truth. You need to push methods for strong field and user engagement behind the platform. Either way you slice it – the general rule of thumb is that without strong support (usually with a pure software install), a distributed marketing initiative will fail.
An Ad Builder? Or a Marketing Platform? Know the Difference.
Second rule. Whenever the onus is placed on the field to finish the marketing execution chain, it impacts adoption (negatively). We often refer to this as the “last-mile problem”.
What do we mean by this? Many companies represent that they have a marketing platform, but at the end of the day, all it really is is an Ad-Builder. The user builds an Ad (in whatever medium – e-mail, direct mail, social media, etc.), but then he/she is responsible for taking it the last mile…. to an e-mail system to send the e-mail, or a printer to mail the file, or a social media site to broadcast the message.
If your system can’t handle this in a turnkey manner, deflecting the responsibility to the field is a sure-fire way to decrease use of your marketing programs/materials and lead to a failed initiative.
Concentrate on Your Core Requirements, but Make sure you can Grow
In consideration to the above requirement, the honest feedback is that no one company has “all-areas” covered. You’ll also most likely need to take baby steps on how you launch your platform and corresponding services to the field. Its a marathon, not a sprint.
In marketing, we always love to focus on the buzz words of what’s hot. But what are your core requirements? What does your organization spend 80% of their time supporting, or what is the most difficult challenges you are facing with your field? By focusing there first, you are solving for problems that are immediate and most important, rather than getting jazzed up by a certain feature that may have little overall relevance in the beginnings of your system.
That being said, you also MUST explore your partner’s growth potential to ensure your future objectives are aligned with the product and service roadmap of your company of choice. In evaluating your partner, to what extent is their core focus squarely focused on solving the needs of decentralized marketing organizations? What is on their product roadmap, and to what extent do your opinions matter in developing this roadmap. Is this their core platform, or just an extension of their system outside their area of focus? Is development finished on the software platform, or are their continued IT resources improving the technology? What are these resources?
By not focusing on core requirements, and/or choosing a company not dedicated to solving the complex challenges for decentralized marketing initiatives, long-term viability of your solution is poor.
In conclusion – always remember……be forward thinking about the potential growth of your marketing intiatives. Where you will be two years down the line will be a lot different from today. Avoid the pitfalls of the CMS landscape by understanding who your partner really is – and their philosophies on helping you drive strategy to deliver valuable local marketing solutions for your network.

Wafa Jamal being interviewed by Ola Kobeissi for a UNDP video production. The “Nijmet Al Sobeh” women’s cooperative was first established in 1998 with the aim to improve the conditions of rural women in Rashaya district. It is now run by 20 women and produces all types of jam and Lebanese “Mouneh” or stocks of food for winter days. The cooperative has outlets to local, regional and global (European and American) markets.
ART Lebanon supported these women through procurement of needed equipment as well as building their capacities to better improve their work, efficiency and marketing skills.
The woman being interviewed (Wafa Jamal) said that working at the cooperative has empowered her in terms of feeling useful, efficient and more confident. She admits how as a housewife she “used to feel like being a burden on her family especially amid the difficult economic situation”. Thanks to her work and earned income at the cooperative, today she believes she is “an adequate breadwinner of the family”. She spends her own money on her kids education, on her home and on health adding “I can also buy something for myself anytime I want”.

Our reluctance to following some simple steps to prevent wastage of food is becoming an act of sin now. We, very irresponsibly are tossing life-saving food it bins as if it is of no good use for no one. The food we are wasting weighs billions of tons. And, the amount of food not being used to satisfy global hunger is epidemically increasing.
There is only one simple solution to this serious problem. Simply purchase, prepare, serve, eat and throw wisely. With a little helping hand offered by the latest technology, we can smartly save a huge amount of unutilized food and route it to those who can address their needs with this food. We can use Delicia to put an end to this problem up to the hilt.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.
Akrotiri, a Bronze Age settlement preserved under ash from the eruption, provides a frozen-in-time glimpse into Minoan life. The ruins of Ancient Thera lie on a dramatic bluff that drops to the sea on 3 sides. Fira, the island's commercial heart, has the Archaeological Museum of Thera and boutique shops. It also has a lively bar scene and tavernas serving local grilled seafood and dry white wine, made from the Assyrtiko grape. Oia is famous for sunsets over its old fortress [Santorini Google Travel]
The UN-Habitat in partnership with the Ministry of Decentralization, Housing and Territorial Administration, and the ANMCV (National Association of the Municipal Districts of Cape Verde) organized, in June 22nd to July 2nd, a training course for Local Leadership Trainers for all the cities of Cape Verde. The objective is to create training modules for the Local Leadership to support the process of strengthening capabilities in Strategic Planning for municipalities of Cape Verde.
This action is in the scope of implementation of the One Programme, signed between the different UN agencies and the Government, whose specific activities are included in subprogram 3 - the promotion of citizen participation for the preservation of urban development - and subprogram 4 – the strengthening of municipalities for strategic planning and local economic development.
The Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Cape Verde, Mrs. Narjess Saidani, recognizing the importance of the meeting, stressed at the time, that the UN would continue to cooperate with the Government in the decentralization process, with the aim to support efforts for steady improvement in the lives of people around the country. According to Mrs. Saidani, this establishes priorities and resources at the local level to respond effectively to the needs for a uniform development.
The Minister of Decentralization, Housing and Territorial Administration, Dr. Sara Lopes, pointed out that this training course and the participation of all municipalities, attest to their engagement to develop a culture of valuing human resources, in order to establish the decentralization process in Cape Verde. In addition, the Minister also mentioned, that the Ministry will continue to count on the support from the UN Habitat as well as other UN agencies.
