Invites are not necessary

This couple of Harlequin Ducks seemed to be interested in something happening down the beach. They were quite far from me.

Below in the comments is one of the captures I ended up taking about 15 minutes after this one. About an hour before this while at home I was checking out the gray skies, but also the slow brighter light to the west that was indicating the potential of the sun sneaking under the cloud deck for sunset.

So I headed down to the river at my Dad's. I surprised him by not calling and letting me know I was heading down (I had already visited him earlier in the day for a while, so he would not be expecting me back). He was sitting in the sun porch room that looks out over the river, taking in the slow sunset when I popped onto his deck with camera bag and tripod.

Told him I figured it was at least worth coming back to see what happened with the sunset as the potential was there for some great lighting. But it would be close to see which side won there with the clouds far off in the west. A lot like how the Super Bowl would most likely be too ...

This capture I made from out on the pier, and he had come out on this cold but calm winter evening on the pier to sit on the bench and discuss the pretty light, the reflections on the water (and who would also win the Super Bowl).

Whether the sky ended up lighting up or not ... just spending more time there with my Dad was worth while ... a win / win situation in my book. As my Dad will tell you, I have been down many times thinking the sky would end up being really colorful ... only to be let down. But I am getting better as time goes on to pick more winners.

Exposing these moments at sunset with the bright area and dark clouds is always a challenge ... getting that proper exposure to balance everything in one shot. Here I was also extending the shutter a little with the 6 Stop ND to smooth out the water just a bit as there was the slightest of breezes on the recent unfrozen river.

Think I got this one pretty close with the highlights there in the brightest of spots right at the limit.

Amidst the salt-tinged breeze and the echoing cries of distant waves, a colony of seagulls had gathered on the rugged shore to discuss a curious arrival – a weathered dinghy washed ashore by the tides. With raucous caws and flapping wings, they debated its purpose. Some argued it could be a grand nest, while others envisioned it as a makeshift fishing vessel. The elders, their feathers flecked with wisdom, suggested it might serve as a communal perch for their gatherings. As the sun dipped low, the debate continued, a lively avian symposium by the ever-restless sea.

Colorful debates on Buddhist doctrines are held here and these employ a style distinctive from those at Lhasa's other famous monasteries. Lhasa, Tibet

This is the debate courtyard of the byes college. Up to several years ago, the two philosophical colleges of se ra -- byes and smad -- used their own textbooks (yig cha), and debated separately. Fearing that there were not sufficient numbers of monks to sustain separate debate periods, the two colleges decided to consolidate their curricula sometime in the last decade. They adopted the textbooks of the byes college monastery, and since that time the monks of both colleges debate together for a two-hour period every afternoon when the doctrinal session, or "quatrimester" (chos thog) is convened. Like all of se ra's major debate courtyards, the byes debate ground is surrounded by an outer perimeter wall, and contains many trees that provide shade in the summer.

Debating on uploading this, but I wanted to show off how beautiful this came out. It looks so nice, I had to use it for a desktop background. Enjoy!

The tufted duck (Aythya fuligula) is a small diving duck with a population of close to one million birds. The scientific name is derived from Ancient Greek aithuia an unidentified seabird mentioned by authors including Hesychius and Aristotle, and Latin, fuligo "soot" and gula "throat"

The adult male is all black except for white flanks and a blue-grey bill with gold-yellow eyes. It has an obvious head tuft that gives the species its name. The adult female is brown with paler flanks, and is more easily confused with other diving ducks. In particular, some have white around the bill base which resembles the scaup species, although the white is never as extensive as in those ducks. The females' call is a harsh, growling "karr", mostly given in flight. The males are mostly silent but they make whistles during courtship based on a simple "wit-oo".

The only duck which is at all similar is the drake greater scaup which, however, has no tuft and a different call.

The tufted duck is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

American Ranch, Prescott, Arizona, October 2023

Montreal. Biodome. These two lovely parrots (hyacinth macaw) won't be the first animals you see, but surely they will be the first you hear. They are the loudest animal in there. When they squawk, it looks like a noisy competition for scaring the others or for shaking the building. You might even think there's a velociraptor around.

And finally you find the loud-mouthed couple and it's a surprise they're actually so small. They look like smiling. They are even cute.

Sometimes, the debates seem to work only to prove who shouts deafening. Unfortunately, it's not anymore about the words, but the volume they could reach. He who can shake the building the more wins all.

Washington University in St. Louis is hosting the second U.S. presidential debate in six days. It's costing $4-5 million dollars, some of which is going towards the army of guards already keeping everyone out of the part of the campus where it will occur.

The student newspaper reports that the 500 winners of the 10,000+ applicants for seats don't know where they're sitting. An op-ed in the paper complains that the candidates aren't discussing the most important issues, and a profile of the VP candidates states that Tim Kaine is so boring his Secret Service name is Tim Kaine. Also, there's an ad for "Trump's Small Hand Soap" being sold in the nearby student ghetto shopping district.

The April Blue Jay debate on will cold and snow be done by May. The Jay in the middle is looking at the snowflakes coming down and is seemingly not optimistic.

The other two jays know the robins have returned however they returned later this year. The Jays continue to debate holding out hope that snow will not appear in May and

with some luck be all gone by the end of April.

One piece of bread, twenty swan-shaped debates—feeding time on the waterfront is always a spectacle. While swans typically find enough food in the wild, extra treats can be helpful in freezing weather. Bread is fine in moderation (as long as it’s not mouldy), but it's worth remembering that feeding too much can lead to dietary issues. A little kindness goes a long way in cold weather.

The debates between monks occur in the presence of their teachers, with established rules or procedures for the defender and the questioners. The tradition can be traced back to to India and arrived in Tibet in the 8th century.

This debate takes place once a week. The monks sitting have to defend their point to the men that are standing. It is like a weekly exam to show whether they are ready for the next level. Each time the monk standing makes a point, the does a gesture of slapping his hands together and taking a step outward.

I am not talking about these old houses. I am actually debating whether to sell my Sigma DP1 Merrill. Ever since I acquired the Sony A7Rii, I have not been touching the Sigma. Afterall, it 's just a one-trick pony. As you can see from this image, under low ISO, it can capture incredible details with its Foveon sensor and fixed prime lens. The pixel level sharpness is hard to beat. But its dynamic range and high ISO performance really suck. So it winds up being a day time camera that I typically carry with me for hiking. And it turns out, my Pixel 2XL smartphone is gradually replacing the Sigma as my pocket camera. With the Sigma, I still needs to wear it on my neck. It 's compact enough but not really that pocketable.

So I am torn here. It 's Spring time and I would like to purge the unused stuff in my closet.

At Sera Monastery, Lhasa.

Sera Monastery, "Wild Roses Monastery" is one of the "great three" Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, located 2.01 km north of Lhasa and about 5 km3 north of the Jokhang. The other two are Ganden Monastery and Drepung Monastery. The origin of its name is attributed to a fact that the site where the monastery was built was surrounded by wild roses in bloom.

The original Sera Monastery is responsible for some 19 hermitages, including four nunneries, which are all located in the foot hills north of Lhasa.

The Sera Monastery was founded in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey of Sakya Yeshe of Zel Gungtang (1355–1435), a disciple of Je Tsongkhapa.

During the 1959 revolt in Lhasa, Sera monastery suffered severe damage, with its colleges destroyed and hundreds of monks killed. After the Dalai Lama took asylum in India, many of the monks of Sera who survived the attack moved to Bylakuppe in Mysore, India.

Sera Monastery in Tibet and its counterpart in Mysore, India are noted for their debate sessions.

And welcome to the Town Hall Debate. It is now time to begin letting ordinary citizens ask questions of the candidates; let us begin with Mr. Luthor.

----------------------

“Are the rumors of you’re terrorist activity involvement true?”

Those rumors are absolutely false. I’ve not, have ever been, or will, be working with terrorists or any other “super” threat to the United States.

----------------------

Jeff McEweel, President, founder, and sole member of the Aquaman Fan Club Asks:

“What kind of celebrations do you plan on throwing for Aquaman and the League of Super Friends for their victory and liberation of Gotham from Mr. Freeze? And what kind of cake will there be?”

While it is known that Aquaman, along with other super powered peoples, liberated Gotham from some of its escaped inmates, the more important issue of re-building is still present. Now is not the time to be praising vigilantes while a city is in ruins. And we’ll have Devil’s Food Cake when I’m sworn into office! [Crowd laughs]

----------------------

“Are the rumors true that you yourself, utilizing your companies military division, supplied the forces of escaped inmates, specifically Mr. Freeze, during the Gotham crisis?”

These rumors are not true. Although, there is truth to some of it. Freeze did gain access to stolen LexCorp experimental weapons during the Gotham crisis. Our LexCorp facility was attacked and stolen from multiple times when Gotham was cut off from the rest of the country. I will work however to track down all of these weapons now, aided by their tracking devices, now that Gotham is being re-built and the majority of its inmates incarcerated again.

----------------------

What do you plan on doing with all those so called super villains and psychotics roaming free on the streets of Gotham?”

The “super villains” of Gotham have been a large problem for a long time. This previous incident was the fourth massive breakout within two years, and it ended with the destruction of the city. Obviously, there’s something wrong with they way they were handled and incarcerated. As President, I would motion to shut down Arkham Asylum, and order that the newly re-captured, and soon to be captured, criminals be separated and moved to various prisons across the country, so they will never break out to team up again.

----------------------

“Will you outlaw all forms of vigilantism?”

Absolutely. These “superheroes” have been causing as much damage, destruction, and death as their so called enemies. They work outside the law, and have no consideration for our judicial system. The days of flying supermen are over. We as citizens and people of the United States need to take our country and problems into our own hands; we must help ourselves instead of being helped. As President, I will make sure this Golden Age of Heroes ends…immediately…Thank you.

----------------------

Questions supplied by various GCW members—Thank you! I tried to answer most of the questions, but if some were left out it would be most likely due to being previously answered in past debates, or the information was not as necessary for direct answers. And don’t forget to vote! Vote Luthor that is!
