Why so hot?

The depth and shape of Death Valley influences its summer temperatures. The valley is a long, narrow basin that reaches down to 282 feet (86 m) below sea level, yet is walled by high, steep mountain ranges. The clear, dry air and sparse plant cover allow sunlight to heat the desert surface. Heat radiates back from the rocks and soil, then becomes trapped in the valley's depths. Summer nights provide little relief as overnight lows may only dip into the 85°F to 95°F (30°C to 35°C) range. Heated air rises, yet is trapped by the high valley walls, is cooled and recycled back down to the valley floor. These pockets of descending air are only slightly cooler than the surrounding hot air. As they descend, they are compressed and heated even more by the low elevation air pressure. These moving masses of super heated air blow through the valley creating extreme high temperatures.

"We moved toward the city, secure in our holy cause, and beheld such a fortress. And on every hand I saw a great plain of woe and cruel torment ..."

Dante Alighieri (Florence, between May 21 and June 20, 1265 AD - Ravenna, September 13 or 14, 1321 AD) [1] was a Florentine writer, poet and politician, .

Now on his private plane he looks at Europe.

Sunset over Badwater Basin, taken from Dante's View at Death Valley National Park. The overlook here sits at an elevation of 5,575 feet. It provides a breathtaking view of Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point in North America with an elevation of -282 feet.

Usually there isn't a lake here, it's a byproduct of the heavy rains from a hurricane in August that dumped about two inches of rain in the park. That doesn't sound like much, but to Death Valley it was a deluge of Biblical proportions. The ephemeral lake is massive, and stretches for miles across the basin (although it's only just a few inches deep). It's slowly shrinking as the water evaporates, so it won't be around for too long. I'm very thankful that the park was able to reopen and were able to see it.

The making of Death valley

Death Valley National Park, California

My wife and I took a day trip from Las Vegas to this magnificent place for my birthday. Death Valley had been on my bucket list for years. We spent all day here fascinated by the "out of this world" scenery, then drove back to Vegas.

It was quite a memorable experience to say the least. More pics to come. Thank you for your comments and visits.

The sweeping colors of alpenglow, the colors of the Belt of Venus, are traveling across the sky producing brilliant colors in the clouds over Death Valley in this view from Dante’s View on a windy morning. I had started the day more than a mile below this spot at Badwater. Down there in the dark I went to open my car door and it resisted. With my stereo on I could not hear the wind, and the wind was a minimum of 20mph at all times as it turned out. Thinking maybe it’s a sign that I shouldn’t be there, I decided to take my chances with the mountain wind instead which, while it can be just as windy or more, in my experience here tends to be far more variable. Despite the wind I was able to shoot this panorama of a brilliant sunrise as the air fluctuated between 0mph and 38mph randomly. The 11,049ft summit of Telescope Peak is hidden in the clouds. Down at Badwater, the outlines of the still present lake are hard to make out. To my astonishment I would later discover that the lake, which had just the day before been a few inches deep at backwater, had literally moved to the north by the wind leaving Badwater dry. In this view I can just barely make it out, compressed into a sort of crescent shape on the right and the reflective surface masked by distance and an extremely turbulent surface. I don’t get tired of the vast, alien desert beauty of this enormous National Park. Death Valley National Park is just a little bit smaller than the state of Connecticut.

Rounding off three days of successful testing on its return to the mainline, DB Cargo's born-again Class 92, 92029 "Dante" flies through Acton Bridge with unneeded insurance loco, Class 90, 90035 in tow.

The third and final days testing of this initial stint involved a long run out to Carlisle and back - the first time a DB Cargo Class 92 had been north of Warrington since 2015. The return leg was running as 0Z92 13:27 Carlisle New Yard to Crewe Electric Traction Depot.

The Brush Traction locomotive has returned after eight years and two months in store and is poised to bolster DB's active UK Tunnel/HS1 fleet. Before that, though, an imminent trip to Toton's paint shop beckons.

Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattore: fecemi la divina potestate, la somma sapïenza e 'l primo amore. Dinanzi a me non fuor cose create se non etterne, e io etterna duro. Lasciate ogni speranza, voi ch'entrate.”
