💔 My Ishmael...
He's left us, you guys.
I am lost beyond my imaginings.
My dearest, sweetest, most loyal & favorite boy. I can't even begin. I can't even see how to start to see how big this hole is, how deep and how quiet it is.
Ishmael left us yesterday afternoon. It came on quite suddenly... he'd been eating less over the past weeks but was still doing really well, but beginning this past Saturday (a week ago) he stopped eating much at all and within days had lost at least a pound... He'd been struggling to sleep properly or find a comfortable position on his bed on the couch. He'd been struggling to offer me the reassurances he usually did with a look or a nuzzle. They came, but they were th fewest and furthest between I'd ever seen... and i've seen him through some yuck. Yesterday morning and then afternoon it came to a head... there was much hurried debate about what to do and our vet made a space for us yesterday at 2:40pm. I almost (nearly succeeded) had Bonnie turn around. The vet (the lovely Dr. Trepel) was amazed how much weight he'd lost since seeing him this past spring. He was dehydrated (despite copious water drinking at my hand). He never even tried to stand on the exam table. She told us it was time, and if he somehow bounced back, given his muscle mass, it would only be a small blip on a downward trajectory.
And so I chose, both Bonnie and chose, to let him go.
And did so as lovingly and strongly as I could.
I could write for days about what-ifs, and longer about his amazing strength and empathy. I could write volumes about him, things no one outside our home knows or understands. He was far more than a cat. I know that sounds stupid to some. I know others understand it. I can only tell you that with Schmael that truth was/is exponential. He was a little man. He was a spiritual being having a cat experience. Many of you knew him, but to be honest, it's only in the last 5 years I really felt like he and I knew one another, truly. I am the luckiest.
I want to post more photos but am only posting this one for now. Along with this stream-of-conscious blurb of text I keep fountaining out...
And also this video... this is from just this past Monday, which is the last day that he had longer periods of acting like himself. This was one of them. I didn't know why i took this video at the time exactly, but felt compelled to. Now I know why.

Ishmael was the kindest, bravest soul... he didn't know aggression. I could never sum him up here other than to say that a fair number of people knew my old cat Isaac whom I loved. Ishmael was more than Isaac..... For many years I believed and said I'd never know another pet friend like Isaac. But little did I know at the time, and for long after Isaac passed on (June 2005) that I already had another friend, just a 2 year old youngster, "The Baby", an even deeper soul, living with me then. By yesterday's end, Ishmael lived exactly twice as long Isaac did.... he was just a couple months shy of 21 years this coming February. Honestly we thought he'd make it... we were half-worried he'd make it far longer. Taking care of him the past couple years has been a challenge, but never the sort I've heard about from others. He never didn't reach the litterbox. he accepted help but never truly needed it to jump up on the couch, even as wobbly as he'd gotten in past month, and exponentially so in the past week. He never made it burdensome. He accepted my help and more, I accepted his (and I've needed a LOT in the last 5 years). That's the realization I'm dealing with today.
He was my best friend. He was the most loyal dog without any of the annoying bits. He was so much more than a cat - and I've had some great ones.
He was 'Shmael, Ishmael, Izzy, da Baby, Schmaelie, Priority Schmael.... and a dozen other nicknames. We knew his passing would come and would be awful, but we didn't expect how quickly/suddenly it would come. Given the past years and slow burn, we thought there'd be more time. We didn't expect the ambiguity in the quick decision I was forced to make. And more than anything I expected that the relief I would feel for him (and for Bonnie and I in some way) would at least be equal to the grief and loss...
It is not equal. I am so much more destroyed than I can express or could have imagined. Realizing the depth and breadth of his deep connectedness to so many parts of my life, and every facet of our past and especially our current home.
Our house, our couch (where he quite literally lived) is beyond empty at the moment. Everything I have gone out and done in my life for so many years has started and ended with Ishmael. He was a rock that I didn't entirely appreciate that I leaned on as much as I did. He gave me more than I can ever express to you guys.
This is so insanely difficult. I am so happy to know he isn't suffering. He is beyond pain and beyond time, so in that sense he is in a place where I'm already with him again. We all are. There is some peace in that.
But here now, in this realm... it's very empty. And I miss him more than I can describe or ever wanted to imagine. I can't be grateful enough for his quiet, steadfast gifts and trust. The guy kinda saved me more than once. The deepest, most beautiful soul... he taught us so much. He gave us more than we gave.
I love you Ishmael.
