Surprised to find a Hedgehog on my drive when I arrived home late morning. He soon scooted off under the bush's, just time for a quick shot from the car window. It is usually considered they must be short of food if out in the daytime

The truck is there to block the cattle from going in that direction. A tractor came in later to block the road on our side. Regina Photo club field trip, NW of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. 13 November 2021

The eastern side of Morningside Drive is occupied by the 30-acre (12-hectare) Morningside Park, which has walking paths, playgrounds, and a duck pond. Non-institutional buildings on the west side of Morningside Drive are primarily apartments.

Morningside Heights stretches from West 110th Street (called Cathedral Parkway in some parts) to West 125th Street, and from the Hudson River to Morningside Avenue.

The #MacroMondays" #WearandTear theme

This is my late grandfather’s first driving licence, revealing on its unseen back page that he passed his test in November 1937. It’s a pocket-sized booklet, a little larger than a credit card, with a red cardboard cover.

It consists of a number of pages allowing it to be renewed annually at a cost of five shillings each time, a trivial amount to those who could afford a car. The average weekly wage in 1957 was between seven and eight pounds. Those under 50 may not be aware that there were 20 shillings to a pound and 12 pennies to a shilling.

Pictured is the most recent page, allowing him to drive 1957-1958. Examining the booklet reveals that some pages had become stuck together (some still are), their contents destroyed by separating them, caused by the licence having become wet. That was unsurprising. My grandfather was a Post Office Engineer, a reserved occupation in World War Two. He fought his war in London, repairing phone lines and telephone exchanges damaged by bombing which peaked in The Blitz of October 1940-May 1941 and again in the V1 and V2 attacks of 1944. I imagine him making and perhaps improvising repairs in unstable buildings, always with the possibility of an unexploded bomb nearby, maybe with water ingress and in all weathers with this licence in his pocket. Put that way it is not surprising to find grime and mould damage on his driving licence, apparent at the edges of the pages and across the page to the left of the worn out spine. And remember, he performed his dangerous work as a civilian, one of millions who just KBO (a Churchillism) as a member of our finest generation.

The photo was taken as shown using a 12mm extension tube. It is a multi-image stack, necessary to provide the depth of focus which was an issue due to the composition I chose. Photoshop allowed the grime and mould to be teased out to reflect this week’s theme.

Helen's kind reply below, which refers to her father, her own member of our finest generation, caused me to do a bit of digging. Although I mention above that my grandfather had passed his driving test in 1937, the stamp on the driving licence refers to "passed test group one". It was an eyesight test. Like Helen's father, my grandfather had never passed a driving test. It would take a person only slightly more direct than me to observe that, at times, the family might have guessed . . . :-)

I present here, on Flickr, a series of stolen and not stolen shots, rescued from oblivion, taken on the streets of Taormina, a tourist town on the eastern coast of Sicily. I took many photos by lengthening the exposure times, thus achieving a “blur” effect; I took portraits, especially of very nice couples, one of Chinese origin who got married in Taormina, one from Holland, another from Germany, portraits of very sweet and very nice Chinese girls, a very nice girl portrayed while she was working in a pastry shop, of the artist Leopoldo, a theater actor, who I had the pleasure of photographing (and posting) on several other occasions.

Ya had to be quick for scenery shots while riding on the train. And--hopefully not get someone else's head in your shot. The train was fun, but a lot of dedicated photographers elbowing for the best views.

Rated as one of Africa's most scenic drives, Clarence Drive is a breathtaking 22 km scenic mountain pass along the R44 road between Gordon's Bay and Rooi Els in the Western Cape, South Africa.

This route offers panoramic views of False Bay, its coastline, Table Mountain, and parts of the Cape Peninsula, making it a favoured drive for tourists and locals alike.

The road runs along the east coast of False Bay, passing notable spots like Kogel Bay, Sparks' Bay, and Rooi Els, extending towards Betty's Bay and branching to Cape Hangklip.

Clarence Drive was developed during World War II when businessman Jack Clarence proposed the construction of a proper road to replace the footpath used by drovers. The road was built with the labour of Italian prisoners of war and was part of a military project to improve access to radar stations on Cape Hangklip.

This history adds to the significance of the drive, which was later improved in 1998 with additional viewing points to enhance the scenic experience.

The surrounding area is part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, renowned for its extraordinary plant biodiversity and wildlife, including species like Cape leopards, African wild cats, and various small mammals and birds.

The coastal waters are popular for whale watching between June and December, attracting nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Rooi Els itself is a charming coastal village known for its tranquility and natural beauty, making the drive not only a scenic route but a journey through rich South African natural and historical heritage.

Opened in 1953, closed in 1986. The sign remains.

Asked a girl what she wanted to be,

she said baby, can't you see.

I wanna be famous, a star on the screen,

but you can do something in between.

Baby you can drive my car.

Yes I'm gonna be a star.

Baby you can drive my car,

and baby I love you.
