The Fokker DR1 Triplane appeared in 1917. It was a copy of the Sopwith Triplane. The DR1 was not particularly fast but it had an excellent rate of climb. It was also very manoeuvrable making it the choice of many aces, the best known being Manfred von Richtofen with his blood-red triplane.

[EN] During a 3.5 hour change in Valga, I had the time to make a little photo tour through the town of Valga. I ended my little tour near a railway crossing, where I would take a photograph of the Valga – Riga service. The service runs twice a day with DR1A units owned by Pasažieru vilciens. On August 27, DR1A units 311 and 210 were in charge of service 873 to Riga.

Fokker Dr.I

The Fokker Dr.I, often known simply as the Fokker Triplane, was a World War I fighter aircraft built by Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. The Dr.I saw widespread service in the spring of 1918. It became famous as the aircraft in which Manfred von Richthofen gained his last 19 victories, and in which he was killed on 21 April 1918.

Explored

Latvijas Dzelzceļš (Latvian Railways, LDz) two-car DMU DR1A-405 (formed of driving trailer DR1A-405.7 and driving motor DR1A-405.1) has just been started up at the end of Daugavpils station, where it was parked in a siding.

This was taken on the morning of the third day of the PTG Tours "Rail Wonders of Lithuania", not long before our special train departed (back into Lithuania, having arrived here at lunchtime the previous day and stayed just one night). Today had dawned bright and sunny (after heavy rain and a thunderstorm the previous afternoon), but the clouds soon gathered again and there was another afternoon thunderstorm.

My note taking at the time meant I didn't even record the number of the driving motor car (although it probably wasn't visible without walking off the end of the platform or going onto the footbridge across the yard), but I remember it being said that this was a VIP DMU - and it was certainly painted in a different livery from the usual Latvian class DR1A units, which were yellow and blue (and in longer formations). I'm grateful to Janet and John Cottrell (who photographed this unit at about the same time as me) for identifying the driving motor car and for confirming my memories!

The class DR1 DMUs were built from 1963 by Rīgas Vagonbūves Rūpnīca in Riga (now Latvia) for use all over the Soviet Union. A later version, the class DR1A, followed in the 1970s, with the prototype (the unit depicted) appearing in 1973 and then two production batches a few years later. Train formation was usually a driving motor and a driving trailer, with between one and four non-driving trailers between, although the examples we saw (and rode) on this trip (in Lithuania and Latvia) were all three-car units.
