I always see faces in the world around me, I can't help it ;-D

While assembling this polyhedron "Star Prints", created by Aldo Marcell, I saw this face with a big surprise in the eyes and mouth, so I tried to translate that into a photo. To my big surprise the shiny surface created another distorted face, magical ;-)

So the 'Star' is looking at himself and wonders "Is that really me?"

Here you can see a different view.

Origami "Star Prints" is related to another origami dodecahedron I folded earlier: "Oleo", (also created by Aldo Marcell), which is an "easier" version, just a few creases less.

Folded from 30 pieces of double colored kami paper (7,5x7,5 cm).

No glue.

Tutorial can be found here.

Another lovely design by Aldo Marcell, called 'origami Oleo'. It was fun folding it and to ensemble this dodecahedron, you have to be patient, 30 units without glue.

On the photo you see the same model from two different angles but at the same distance. In the upper one I see a face ;-)

There is also a tutorial, if you want to fold it.

I folded it with 30 squares kamipaper 11,7x11,7cm.

3D Geometry

This week the Snap Happy theme was 'geometry' chosen by Tricia. I have chosen three dimensional objects to be my subjects which I had to make first and this is the result of that.

Here are the two end models, each made of 30 pieces of paper measuring 7.5x7.5cm.

Final size: diameter 9.5 cm

Model: origami Picasso Kususdama

Design: Uniya Filonova

I got the diagrams from a friend.

A dodecahedron used as a 12 sided die. Each face is a regular pentagon with 5 edges and 5 verticies. The 5 adjacent faces are also visible.

Illumination: LED spotlight with a opposing reflector for shadow fill.

AMSTERDAM Festival Light - of the largest Alliance to the most intimate gesture: The Uniting Lightstar by Venividimultiplex clearly has the theme of friendship. To start we see from afar a polygonal, luminous object. To be precise a dodecahedron. That exists off again twelve pentagonal surfaces. That number corresponds to the number of stars in the European flag. Who gets closer, see also numerous strings of blue light that all points of this artificial star connect and that the ongoing relationships between the European countries and their inhabitants. The Uniting Lightstar houses another characteristic of friendship, namely the human ability to friendships and grow. Venividimultiplex, an Amsterdam collective consisting of Onne Wachira, Dirk Schlebusch and Joost van Bergen wants with The Uniting Lightstar the essence of friendship on display iconic way.

Another one from the Stockholm underground. This is is between two of the platforms where a giant Dodecahedron sits in between the tow platforms. It was hard to line this up as I didn't know what to line it up with the lines on the floor or the Dodecahedron itself. I went with the lines on the floor, but looking at it on a larger screen in not sure if it look balanced or not.

It is a variation of "Layered star dodecahedron".

Designer: K.W.Hur

Yes, the wheels are 3D printed, but you know, I could not leave the dodecahedron just unused, when it was once designed.

What you see is an pinktronish recovery vehicle with magnetic hook for your broken rovers.

Paper: 5 cm Kraft paper from Carmen Sprung's shop

Modules: 30 edge modules

Model: Lewis Simon and Robert Neale

Book: Modular Origami Polyhedra p. 45

The book says: This is a very sturdy model, a classic. Not really much to add, besides that it's superfast to fold too, with only 6 folds per module.

The blue dice has 20 sides and is called a icosahedron. The green dice has 12 sides and is called a dodecahedron. the yellow dice has 10 side and is called a pentagonal trapezohedron. Yikes! I will probably never need to know that again! :-)

My favorite coffee shop in Tulsa has this light fixture it has amazed me over the years and I have taken many photos of this dodecahedron cube, which makes a great subject for Beautiful Geometry.

I ran out of 1/4" spherical magnets before I could finish this form. It is hard to see what is going on without seeing them in person so I will attempt to describe it here: 4D Dodecahedral Tube Mesh

Invitation to Mark Ryden's new art show "Dodecahedron" in N.Y. So awesome! <3

Wish I was going! :'(

From 12 pentagonal rosettes and 10 strips of copy paper.

My design, so far.

Rosettes can be ditched to create a sphere only from 10 strips. You need paperclips and it is quite a mess.

Rosettes will hold the paper for you and make the assembly fool-proof.

From a circle. Initial investigations suggest this will be foldable from landmarks.

True woven dodecahedron - designed by dave brill, idea by Robert Neale(?), folded by me. An A4-sheet of copy-paper, cut in 6 strips which were painted with acrylic paint before assembly.

I really like this model a lot and it is the modular model which i have folded for the most times i think. It doesnt need a lot of modules, but still produces a complex geometric shape. (thats a thing i dont like about most of modular origami. you keep folding the same shape a lot of times...)

I folded this model a lot in school, as you dont need any good paper and can use any a4-sheet and can start folding. downside is, that unless you are a real pro, you will need paperclips for assembly.

Diagram is in dave brills book brilliant origami.

Hope you like it :)

A pair of 3D-printed polyhedra, shapes that are constructed of flat faces.

The larger shape on the left is a Small Stellated Dodecahedron and the smaller shape on the right is a Great Dodecahedron (yeah, I wasn't thinking about creating this photo when I printed them).

Both shapes are variants of the Dodecahedron, one of five regular Platonic solids, each of which is constructed from the same regular polygons. The Dodecahedron is constructed from 12 pentagons and has 20 vertices and 30 edges.

The Small Stellated Dodecahedron has 5-sided pyramids protruding from each face of the Dodecahedron. If you look at it facing one of those pyramids on-axis, it has the appearance of a pentagram (a 5-sided star) surrounding it. This polyhedron has 12 vertices, 30 edges, and 12 faces. One frequently see Christmas decorations that are in the shape of the Small Stellated Dodecahedron.

The Great Dodecahedron appears to have pentagrams embedded all over its surface. Like the Small Stellated Dodecahedron, it also has 12 vertices, 30 edges, and 12 faces.

An interesting fact is that the Small Stellated Dodecahedron and the Great Dodecahedron is that they are duals of one another. Every face of one corresponds to a vertex of the other, and vice versa. Other shapes that are duals of one another are the Cube and the Octahedron. The Tetrahedron is its own dual.

These polyhedra, like all polyhedra, obey Euler's polyhedral formula:

v - e + f = 2

This formula relates the number of vertices, edges, and faces that a well-formed polyhedron must have.

We all had team nametags. One of the things that I did a lot of was taking the paper ephemera and scanning it and putting it up on the wiki. When we'd finish a round, we'd get a certificate. Most of the certificates had some sort of puzzle within them, or we thought they did. Really you just had to cut out the pentagrams on them and make a dodecahedron out of the pentagrams. Dodecahedron!

I struggled finishing this off. Later I noticed one of the units had wandered into the paper recycling bag (hubby is very tidy) and once I retrieved it was able to finish it off.
