A queen beed frame made from white oak.

In Great Britain, Jack-O-Lanterns are traditionally made from turnips. The Halloween custom came to American through Irish immigrants, and since turnips weren’t cheap state-side, Americans used pumpkins. Today, pumpkins are used worldwide, to the disappointment of turnip farmers everywhere.

Dracula’s blood punch

Tip the cherry juice, orange peel, chilli, cinnamon sticks, cloves and ginger into a large saucepan. Simmer for 5 mins, then turn off the heat. Leave to cool, then chill for at least 4 hrs, or up to 2 days – the longer you leave it the more intense the flavours. If serving to young children, take the chilli out after a few hours.

When you’re ready to serve, pour the juice into a jug. Serve in glass bottles or glasses and pop a straw in each. Dangle a fangs sweet from each glass.

Sugar rationing in Europe and America from WWI and WWII kept kids off candy until the late 1940s. Radio programs at the time joked that children would have to explain to adults what trick or treating was, and many adult groups opposed the practice as it encouraged extortion and begging.

An Individual woman stands in the middle of the frame, looking away from the camera and appears to be in between actions but caught in a brief still moment before she carries on with her work. She is focused and deeply involved with the flow of her creative construction project. She had a red drill in one hand, and a several screws in the other hand. The sun is shining and she wears a tank top because its a warm afternoon in early spring. She stands outside, in front of her pale yellow house where you can see plants growing up the sides and there are several exposed wire boxes behind her. The straight on, horizontal framing draws notice to a peculiar feature on the house behind her— perhaps a large window was once there but the patch job is far from perfect.

Malloween ghosts

Butter, then line a 30 x 20cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Melt the butter in a large non-stick saucepan. Tip in the marshmallows, then melt very gently for about 10 mins, stirring regularly to make sure they don’t stick.

Once smooth, stir in the cereal until all of the grains are coated. Spoon the mix into the tin, then press down to make it flat and smooth. Chill until cool and set. Can be made up to 2 days ahead.

Make the ghost shapes two ways. Cut the cake into rectangles, then use a sharp knife to round off the tops and zig-zag the bottoms. Or, to make flying ghosts, stamp out circles about 9cm across and use a sharp knife to divide into teardrop-shaped ghosts. Cut pieces of leftover cake to make arms, if you like.

Carefully push a lolly stick into the bottom of each ghost. Put onto a cooling rack. If you’ve made arms, stick them on using a little white chocolate, then spoon over more chocolate and paint it over and down the sides of the ghosts with a pastry brush. Leave to set. Pipe on eyes with the plain chocolate or icing.

Enlarge the templates onto paper using the grid method and cut out. Trace the outline on the cotton-polyester fabric Fill in the outline with dark-gray housepaint. Allow the paint to dry

overnight. Place the chiffon over the painted fabric. Holding the chiffon and painted fabric together, fold over, and stitch the top 2 inches to create a pocket for a curtain rod. Hang curtain on window, silhouette and chiffon side facing out.
