The Mars Opportunity rover has discovered clay minerals in an ancient rock on the rim of Mars' Endeavour Crater, supporting the theory that water may have once flowed through this area. These are photos I downloaded, of this discovery from the NASA web site.

No wait. Hang on a minute I remember now. These are photos that I shot down at Dudley Point, Darwin, the other morning. Please disregard all the above. I got confused. Sorry about that. Yes these are definitely the rocks down at Dudley Point.

The Research Vessel Arctic Discoverer was the workhorse of the successful effort to find and salvage the greatest shipwrecked treasure in United States history. Now, almost three decades later, the forlorn ship languishes, moored to a boat yard south of Jacksonville, Florida, the victim of its own success.

......the way you speak to yourself matters the most.

Most unhappiness in my life is due to the fact that I was listening to myself instead of talking to myself.

Talking to myself about the things I have to be grateful for, fills my mind with uplifting thoughts that buoy spirits.

Yes - I choose to be an optimist: living proof that anyone can be.

So, if you don't understand what I'm saying, I'm talking to myself, again. That's OK, practice makes perfect.

I wish all my friends a happy and prosperous 2021!

Nora

PS - The image is a photo of me holding my smartphone just moments after taking a selfie. I don't know about you, but I like to see the person I'm talking to.

This photo was taken May 17, 2017 on a remote mesa on the northern Paria Plateau where few people tread. It was my third expedition to explore sites beyond the well-known places on the plateau, and the first occasion for 3 all-day solo hikes that yielded noteworthy discoveries, like Secret Pocket, Sky Pocket and the Domes of the Gnomes. I've since returned each year and I continue to find new things. I hope to be back in May 2022 and maybe again in October.

This view, taken above Sky Pocket, looks south down the east wall of the Forked Tongue Ridge toward my starting point which is behind that standalone hill I call Anvil Butte. Beyond that is the butte with Hole-in-the-Rock Arch. Having completed the exciting Wrather Recon to Domes of the Gnomes the previous day, I returned from this hike feeling really pumped about what I had seen so far, which exceeded my expectations. The next day would be even better when I discovered Secret Pocket. A year later, in 2018, I returned to find the Lost City and other dramatic features.

Onsite video of these hikes are posted on my YouTube page as "New Discoveries on the Paria Plateau." The plateau, surrounded by steep cliffs on 3 sides, is in northern Arizona near the Utah state line. Its 400 square miles require 4-wheel-drive to reach and there are no services, so not many go up there. Fewer still hike into the backcountry.

Note: Paria rhymes with Maria. It's from an Indian word meaning "muddy water" (literally the case in the Paria River).

Disclaimer: I don't claim to be the first to have seen these sites. Indians and ranchers undoubtedly knew about them, but left no records. Others like Michael Kelsey and Steve Dodson have explored the plateau extensively, but apparently not where I hiked. I only claim "new discoveries" where there are no written descriptions or photos to be found on the internet prior to mine. I've also asked the BLM about them but have never gotten a firm answer that any ranger has been to them.

When people think of the UK they often think that there’s London and then the rest is just country side.

But, whilst London is no doubt one of the world’s best cities, the UK has so much more to offer.

There are a number of cities that have become extremely popular over the past few years, one of which is the Northern city of Leeds.

This apple tree is at the front of Trinity College and is reputedly descended from the apple tree that inspired Sir Isaac Newton (an Alumnus of Trinity College). If that girl is talking on an Apple iPhone........

Burghwallis is a small village and civil parish in rural South Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 300. The village is situated amongst mixed farmland and woodland on a slight rise roughly six miles north north west of Doncaster, or one mile off the A1.

The village church is dedicated to St Helen. The village pub is the Burghwallis.

In contrast with most of the villages surrounding Doncaster, very little in the way of residential development took place in Burghwallis during the 19th and 20th centuries. Today the village is one of a handful in the area to have retained much of its original character and has a very peaceful small-scale rural feel.

No church is mentioned in Burghwallis' entry in the Domesday Book; however, the Grade II Listed St Helen's chapel is likely to have been either standing or under construction at the time. Several architectural features suggest it is of a pre-Conquest design, and it is held to have been built between 950 and 1100 AD. Parish records as far back as 1596 exist and are available from the Doncaster archives. Priest-in-charge Revd Chris Herbert

The parish was the home of Catholic martyr John Anne, who lived in the Hall during the 16th century.

Jeremy Clarkson spent his childhood on the nearby Home Farm.

Burgh in general tends to mean town/township in Old Norse and Old German. The parish is referred to simply as "Burg" in the Domesday book, becoming Burghwallis in the early 13th century when Dionysia – one of seven surviving daughters of the local lord – was married into the Wallis family. The Wallis family line persisted among the local landowners through to the early 17th century by which time the name of the settlement was so far removed from that of the local aristocracy that the succeeding Anne family appear not to have thought to change it. The name literally means "village of the Wallis family".

Burghwallis Hall, also known as St Anne's Convent, is reputed to have a ghost. On 14 March 1934 a mother smothered her son while he slept, then concealed the body in a closet. Her husband discovered the body, then murdered his wife and took his own life. A music box is reputed to have been heard through the corridors along with the voice of a small boy. The ghost of the man in grey and a small woman are also claimed to be seen walking the corridors.
