Also known as Trwyn Du Lighthouse stands at 29m tall in the eastern extremity of Anglesey North Wales, The Lighthouse has a stepped-base designed to discourage the huge upsurge of waves that had afflicted earlier lighthouses on the site and reduce the force of the water at the bottom of the tower.
When we arrived the tide was out leaving lots of green moss and extremely slippy rocks. I was walking for no more than about 1 minute before i flipped up and landing flat on my back thankfully nothing more than a few bruises and a cut on the arm as i left the camera gear in the car to have a look around first.
Please feel free to favourite and follow.
After a sunny Saturday the weather changed to the typical November mood on Sunday. This did not discourage us and we used the afternoon for an intensive hiking trip around the Obersee near Bielefeld. Schildesche, Ostwestfalen, Germany

Today's morning greeting comes from my garden again, I had already threatened you with something like that. Here you can see a group of crocuses that were almost completely covered by a thick layer of snow overnight.
I love this type of imagery because it shows the battle of spring against winter, which struggles one more time before inevitably losing. The transitions between the seasons are always very exciting for me and often deliver particularly impressive pictures.
The second reason why I like this picture so much is that it conveys strength and vulnerability at the same time. Characteristics that are in each of us. We strive towards a goal, want to grow and blossom. But we face setbacks from time to time. Situations that discourage us and almost bury us under them. It takes strength to persevere here. This is the only way we can ultimately achieve our own goal.
I wish you all this perseverance and the will to personal success. And not just for the coming week.

Kings Canyon is a canyon in the Northern Territory of about 323 kilometres southwest of Alice Springs and about 1,316 kilometres south of Darwin within the Watarrka National Park. The walls of Kings Canyon are over 100 metres high, with Kings Creek at the bottom. Part of the gorge is a sacred Aboriginal site and visitors are discouraged from leaving the walking tracks. According to geologists, the valley was formed more than 400 million years ago. It cuts through a layer of Mereenie Sandstone, which was deposited here 400 million years ago. The sandstone can be viewed in the form of 30-m high cliffs, and as you go deeper, you can witness the softer Carmichael Sandstone, which has been present here for 440 million years. These two layers of sandstone are divided by a thin layer of purple shale or mudstone which depicts the environmental changes between the two formations. 15674

Kids on the side of the road
Where are you headed?
Young and fragile, but so proud
That used to be me at that age
Full of passion and restlessness
What awaits you on the road ahead?
Silent like a mystery
Will you listen to my story?
I used to cross the mountains and the seas
And have come across all walks of life
I used to have it all
Now everything is gone with the wind
Once I was discouraged and disappointed
Lost my direction and life had no meaning
Until I saw that being ordinary was the answer
While you still fantasize about your tomorrow
Wondering whether she will be better or worse
To me, it is just another day
I used to ruin all that I had
And wanted to disappear never to look back
I used to descend into endless darkness
And struggled to climb out but failed
I was once like you, like them.
Like a wildflower in Spring
Feeling hopeless yet still believing
Crying, laughing and living
And being ordinary

The perch is raising his dorsal fin in an effort to discourage the Great Crested Grebe from swallowing it. A futile effort, as it turned out. Water fowl always swallow fish head first to minimize damage from those spiky fins.
“Never say that you can't do something, or that something seems impossible, or that something can't be done, no matter how discouraging or harrowing it may be; human beings are limited only by what we allow ourselves to be limited by: our own minds. We are each the masters of our own reality; when we become self-aware to this: absolutely anything in the world is possible.
Master yourself, and become king of the world around you. Let no odds, chastisement, exile, doubt, fear, or ANY mental virii prevent you from accomplishing your dreams. Never be a victim of life; be it's conqueror.”

"America is home to some strange and, sometimes, downright ludicrous traditions and practices. Having a flamingo (or 50) in your front yard is one such tradition, and enquiring minds would like to know what that is all about.
Truth be told, the meaning of this practice is somewhat subjective as it depends on what the owner would like it to represent. When plastic yard flamingos emerged in the 1950s, it was the climax of America’s post-WWII obsession with the graceful birds. Then, plastic flamingos were kitsch items, cheap décor that added a dash of fun to the garden.
Flamingos also represent Florida, a popular retiree destination. Individuals living the American dream (at least in the mid to late 20th century) intended to spend their golden years on the state’s sun-soaked beaches, surrounded by flocks of pink flamingos. These dreams of ultimate relaxation spread throughout the country, and plastic flamingos were identified as the easiest way to turn homes into “beach houses”.
Of course, no great success story is without detractors. The 1960s saw the first signs of anti-flamingo rhetoric, like “cultured” homeowners and social critics, lambasted lovers of cheap plastic garden ornaments. Cultural publications and other media tried, by all means, to discourage the public from the favored gnomes, idols, and birds.
The sentiment gained so much momentum that even Sears dropped the pink plastic flamingo from their catalog.
Pop culture has also played a significant role in the history of the lawn flamingo. One of the earliest depictions of the ornament was in John Water’s popular 1972 film Pink Flamingo’s although the movie was not about flamingos.
However, the film did help America fall in love with the ornament again, as they were celebrated ironically as a lowbrow icon.
The movie’s success spawned a radical readoption of the pink lawn flamingo as America’s unofficial bird. The ironic wave was in full swing, with flamingo (now a recognized design theme) at the heart of the momentum. Flamingos returned to every decorative item you can think of in the mid-70s and through to the 80s…vases, tablecloths, etc."

This is a spot I'm beginning to enjoy for sunsets. There's some open sky, some trees framing the side, and those two reedy things blowing in the wind...except they're not actually blowing...they're frozen like that, and I enjoy their still movement. I think I would be sad if they were cut down. I'm used to seeing them there, as if they're watching the sunset along with me ;-)

Happy Gemini season to my fellow children of May and June! ♊
Zibska's release for RITUAL consists out of an astral headpiece illustrating the moon cycle and the various constellations enveloped by the night sky, named Asteria. Zib has made each constellation separately attachable, meaning that you can display how many and whichever constellation(s) you so desire.
For this post, I decided to pay tribute to my own sun sign, Gemini. To express the duality inherent in Gemini, I created a twin look using the various colour options of the Asteria headpiece, which happens to quite succinctly display my two main aesthetic interests: a bewitching enchantress of shadows accompanied by a bright and sunny counterpart.
Sadly the Gemini's duality is often associated with more malicious qualities too, such as insincerity and two-facedness. While I cannot vouch for all my siblings of the stars, I hope that this caricature does not discourage anyone from getting to know a Gemini. I can assure you that most of us don't bite (unless you're into that, *wink*)

Green and Black poison dart frogs are small amphibians about 4 cm (1.5 inches) long. They have poison glands on the surface of their body, and toxins are produced by their diet in the wild. Their bright colours and bold markings are believed to discourage predators. Poison dart frogs are also known as poison arrow frogs.
They get this name because hunters living in the rainforest traditionally used the frogs’ skin toxins on their darts and arrows. Some frogs are more poisonous than others. The toxins come from the ants or other insects they eat in the wild. Captive-bred poison dart frogs are not toxic due to their different diet.
I did not use a macro lens here but used a telephoto and still ran away so fast.

One of the most important and common pictures in Santorini is the ones of the blue domes. Even though it's a cliche, finding these domes it's just hard work. This is a picture of the blue domes in Fira. Once you get to fira you have about an hour or more till you get to this dome. So imagine what it is to be walking for an hour or so with fire falling from the sky (too hot). In the end you reach the place and now you have to be jumping around until you get the correct angle. For this picture we had to jump several house to get the perfect spot. You have to be careful over there but if you manage to get your spot you will get your shot. Don't be discouraged while you are there. See the different steps nearby and try to find the spot where I'm taking the picture.
Thank you all for your appreciation.

Toucans are wonderful birds, sporting such lovely and large bills. This one is a Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus) leaping up to get some bananas that the lodge regularly placed out for them. At the end of the trip a group of us when to Toucan Rescue Ranch which had such an educated (and pretty) guide who provided non-stop information as she led our tour of the facility. Although the name implies that its focus is on toucans, my impression was that sloths were its prime focus. We'll get to that in another post. I only mention it to encourage people to take the tour and support this, or one of the other rescue centers in San Jose. I recall her telling us about the toucan's bill. It's not strong, like a parrot, and cannot crack nuts (or the fingers of its handlers). Besides impressing humans, the chief function of the bill is regulation of body temperature. The bill is filled with blood vessels which are exposed to the ambient temperature over the large surface area of the bill. Most of the toucans at the facility were pets whose owners could no longer take care of them. Their presentation strongly discouraged toucans or other wildlife as pets, many of whom will outlive their humans and either perish or be taken by a refuge center. Common sense people!
Karma never used to move so fast, move so fast
Now every second that you can't go back, your pulse reacts
Dozen times you tried to bridge that gap, embrace your past
Discouraged, you just keep running in place
Hoping you can change all that, change all that
'Cause I know you've been losing sleep at night, at night
Even though you say you're satisfied, you lied, you lied
Scratch the surface but you're in too deep, in too deep
Paranoid you might admit defeat
So you don't speak, no no
Took a minute for yourself to see
You're not lonely or damaged
Girl, you're looking for release
You know you can reach for me if you need
'Cause I know you've been losing sleep at night, at night
Even though you say you're satisfied, you lied, you lied
You say you're fine, but in your mind
It's like you know me for the first time
Seeing the signs, you realize
It's like you know me for the first time
You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged, oh I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
The darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small
Show me a smile then
Don't be unhappy
Can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
This world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bear
Just call me up
'Cause I will always be there
And I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
I see your true colors
Shining through (true colors)

A tiny spruce tree no more than six inches tall has somehow grown out of the top of a hundred year old mooring pole at the edge of a busy waterway. Nurtured only by periodic rain falls, it somehow manages to exist and fights for its life. No one planted it and no one ever notices it although it sits in plain sight. Overlooked and unappreciated by those of us that are dealing with our own struggles to survive, it grows in silence not realizing that it's life can never be like the towering trees that surround it in the distance. Never the less, it feels that it belongs and refuses to give in to the forces that try to discourage its fight for survival.

Here is another shot I took the same morning at Wilderness Battlefield. To the left of the frame, you can see some of the Confederate trenches that still remain. The chain is meant to discourage people from walking on them. The fog lent an appropriately eerie feeling at this place where the armies of Grant and Lee fought. Over 3700 men died here.

Cyndi Lauper.............
We spent the day in San Francisco and just after sunset, headed to a state park I had picked out earlier to van camp for the night. By the time we'd driven bumper to bumper over the 4.5 mile (7 km) long Oakland Bridge, it was dark and foggy. I navigated us through Oakland to Walnut Grove successfully, quite proud of myself. But on the road to the park, my heart sank. We were in a subdivision with house after house after house emerging from the fog. This couldn't possibly be right, and I could feel Don questioning my directions, even though he hadn't said a word...
Out of the gloomy haze, a sign appeared, Mount Diablo State Park - and a little toll house - and a firmly locked gate. Even the dogs let out a discouraged sigh. A knock on Don's window, a ranger asking if we were there to camp. An obliging man who unlocked the gate and waved us in. Up the road on the left, he directed.
Up, indeed. Up, up and up to a campground on the mountain. An empty campground overlooking the twinkling lights of Oakland, the Bridge and San Francisco - all to ourselves. The next morning, Don rolled out quietly while I slept, jolting me when the van came to a sudden stop. He slid open the side door, revealing the eastern view at very top of Diablo. All this fell into my waking eyes.
Sometimes you just get lucky.

We as photographers are frustrated artists, most without the ability to draw or paint but generally we have a vision and use the tools at our disposal to create that through technical ability with our cameras, the addition of light modifiers or the use of software in our editing all to achieve the look and feel we are trying to convey to the observer.
Not every image will be a work of art to all nor even good to most but it is a creation that comes from within that needs to get out and how that is presented to the world is completely up to the artist.
Trolls do more than live under bridges they fill the internet and are constantly trying to make themselves feel better about their inadequacies by being critical of others so don’t let them discourage you away from sharing your work with others there are many more supportive caring people than not.

Drom Taberna is becoming my weekly haunt. The place is very poorly lit in weird blue and purple colours which really discourage photography. It is fine during the afternoon, as light pours in the west window, but good jazz usually happens later at night. The drummer spot, usually in the back and dark, was relatively well lit on this occasion. Lowell Whitty is not famous, but respected drummer with 'Heavyweights' and other groups. His twin brother Gram plays usually bass, but I have only seen them play together only once or twice. Their dad Brian is a guitar player and brother Leland is a sax player.

Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu (柳沢吉保) was the No.1 favourite of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi (徳川綱吉), the fifth Shougun (shogun). They were friends since childhood, and the Shougun often visited Rikugi'en to meet Yoshiyasu.
Tsunayoshi was an annoying idealist. He is remembered for issuing the Ordinance Prohibiting Cruelty against Living Creatures (生類憐みの令), which was an extreme animal protectionism based on Buddhist ideology of Nonkilling (Ahimsa).
He ordered to improve the treatment of prisoners and domesticated animals, in particular, dog, to impose the restriction on the use and possession of firearms, to discourage the use of leather, to ban falconry, hunting and angling, animal husbandry and aquaculture, keeping birds and fish as pet, training animals like dogs and monkeys to do tricks, etc.
Offenders were often exiled to Hachijoujima island, and some were even killed.
The ordinance had remained valid for 20 years until he died in 1709. The ordinance was lifted immediately after his death even before his funeral, which testifies how the people and government officials including his life-long friend Yoshiyasu felt about the ordinance.
It is a lesson of history for the Japanese, but I have an impression that the history is repeating itself on a global scale.

From a point on the north bank of the Ebro River, as it passes through the city of Zaragoza, I had the opportunity to capture this scene in which the towers of the Basilica of Our Lady of El Pilar can be seen, a medieval bridge, also called "Puente de Piedra" (Stone Bridge) and the reflection of the lights in the river.
The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar is a Roman Catholic temple in the city of Zaragoza, Aragon (Spain). The Basilica venerates the Blessed Virgin Mary, under her invocation of Our Lady of the Pillar praised as "Mother of the Hispanic Peoples" by Pope John Paul II.
It is reputed to be the first church dedicated to Mary in history.
Local traditions place the history of this basilica at the dawn of Christianity in Spain, attributing an appearance to Santiago el Mayor, the apostle who, according to tradition, introduced Christianity to the country.
This is the only known apparition of Mary before her supposed Assumption into heaven.
TRADITION: Apparition of the Virgin of Pilar: According to ancient local tradition, shortly after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Santiago was preaching the Gospel in Spain, but he was discouraged by the failure of his mission.
Tradition holds that on January 2, AD 40, while he was immersed in prayer on the banks of the Ebro, the Mother of God appeared to him, gave him a jasper column, and ordered him to build a church in her honor: "This place will be my house, and this image and column will be the title and altar of the temple that you will build."
Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants characterized by leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Prickles often occur all over the plant – on surfaces such as those of the stem and flat parts of leaves. These are an adaptation that protects the plant against herbivorous animals, discouraging them from feeding on the plant. Typically, an involucre with a clasping shape of a cup or urn subtends each of a thistle's flowerheads.

Findlater Doocot The doocot at Findlater dates from the 16th century, and is a Category 'A' listed building. It is of rubble construction, and limewashed. The protruding stone bands at intervals are to discourage rats from getting inside. Doos are semi-domesticated Rock Doves (Columba livia), the ancestors of the common feral pigeons found in towns. The birds bred almost all year round and provided eggs and fresh meat in winter, and their droppings were a useful fertiliser. However they fed on surrounding crops, so a law in 1617 stipulated that doocots must not be built less than two miles from the boundary of the estate, so in effect only substantial landowners could build one. This one is associated with Findlater Castle, about half a mile away. It is a 'beehive' doocot, the oldest type, and contains some 700 nesting boxes, each measuring about 15cm x 15cm x 36cm . The boxes start about 18 inches (45 centimetres) off the floor, and taper up to the top, where there was a opening through which the birds could come and go. A ladder on a pivoting stone in the centre of the doocot gave access to the nest boxes. Young pigeons, called 'peesers' were harvested when they were about four weeks old, usually in the morning when the parent birds were out feeding. There was a belief that the destruction of a doocot would be followed within the year by the death of a family member.
Taken at Fort Funston Beach, Daly City, California
The area is covered with a network of trails suitable for hiking or horseback riding. There are two Dutch sand ladders that extend down the dunes to the beach. The beach is known for its magnetic sand and strong currents, discouraging swimming. Fort Funston is a popular dog park and the only park in the GGNRA (Golden Gate National Recreation Area) that allows off-leash dogs. The strong, steady winds make the cliffs overlooking the beach a popular site for hang gliding. The gliding is rated intermediate difficulty (Level III). ( Excerpt from Wikipedia )
They are cute, but these things are so dang destructive... they drive me nuts with chewing up wiring and furniture in our back yard. Unfortunately our dog is too old to chase them away any more, so we need to find alternative ways to discourage them.

You with the sad eyes
Don't be discouraged
Oh, I realize
It's hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
And the darkness inside you
Make you feel so small
But I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
Show me a smile then
Don't be unhappy, can't remember when
I last saw you laughing
If this world makes you crazy
And you've taken all you can bare
You call me up
Because you know I'll be there
And I'll see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let it show
Your true colors
Your true colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
(Can't remember when I last saw you laugh)
If this world makes you crazy
You've taken all you can bare
You call me up
Because you know I'll be there
And I'll see your true colors shinin' through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let it show
Your true colors
True colors
True colors a shining through
I see your true colors
And that's why I love you
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
