"The mountain photographer is interpreting the face of nature - that mysterious infinity, eternally a refuge, a reservoir, an amplifier of spirit; a mother of dreams; a positive though elusive voice in whose depth lies its subtlety."

-- Cedric Wright, 1941

I do not claim to be a "mountain photographer" per se, though I had looked forward to this particular morning at this particular place for many a year, always putting it off, never capitalizing on the idea. Recently I was corresponding with a Flickr contact whose work and sense of adventure I admire, and she was interested in places to visit near Denver / Boulder. I suggested this view might be worth the effort, and ended up joining her, a friend of hers, and a friend of mine for a full-moon hike up into the mountains to witness sunrise. Here, the Diamond, the 2400 ft. east-facing wall of granite below the summit of Longs Peak (14259 ft.), is lit up by alpenglow and reflected in the perfectly still water of Chasm Lake (11823 ft.). It was a magical morning.

On a historical note, the first summiting of Longs Peak was by the famous one-armed Civil War veteran himself, John Wesley Powell.

On a frosty winters morning

Diamond Beach.

Following Hallmark's announcement of the rebrand to Diamond, inkeeping with other Rotala operations around the country, many new and existing vehicles have appeared in the smart two-tone blue. A few have received branding already. It certainly brings a nice bit of colour to this part of Surrey!

Most of the existing Hallmark vehicles have Mobitec destination displays, but the choice of Hanover's 'superx' function means that 'Walton on Thames' doesn't fit and thus looks rather silly scrolling across.

Okay... so here is the last of the seven images that I've just dumped on my stream.

I'll be posting the last of my Namibia images tomorrow... my own personal favourites.

Our next stop was the Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon or Glacier Lagoon, where we witnessed our first aurora sighting but it was very weak and the next morning we went to Diamond Beach to see all the Brocken Icebergs that washout to the ocean and the waves push them back on the beach. It was very tricky to shoot them when you are not equipped to deal with the constant waves. Here are a few I managed to catch. Cherry on top, toward the end our group ran into Mads Peter Iverson and had a great time chitchatting.

Iceland rumbles and simmers with volcanic activity, so the sand at Diamond Beach is black as the sediment is formed by boiling hot lava when it hits the cool of the sea. Some chunks of ice appear as an ethereal glowing blue colour. This is because water is actually blue (not just a reflection of the sky) so when you get ice without air pockets or particularly old glacial ice, it appears blue in colour. The contrast of the sparkling blue glacial ice against the volcanic sand is what attracts photographers from far and wide.

Happy Summer Solstice everyone! Thanks to all of you who constantly support me here on Flickr. I really do appreciate each and every one of you, my dear friends. I am struggling with a few things at the moment, so please excuse my absence and silence at times, but it is essential to my well-being for me to retreat sometimes; to recoup; recharge my batteries and put my house and thoughts in order.

Here is my cover of Diamonds & Rust, which I filmed on a British Summer's Day, hand on heart!!
