I noticed in Safari that I was getting some pretty severe jank (lag) when firing the machine gun in this web-based game prototype, so I started digging.
It wasn't DOM manipulation, className changes or node removal - turned out it was cloned audio resources being freed from memory after playing, and garbage allocation interrupting the game animation pretty severely in Safari (and Webkit nightly) every so often.
Using standard HTML5 audio, you can't do "multi-shot" - each audio object is single-fire and monophonic. Thus when a machine gun fires, SM2 clones the Audio() instance to make a new object that can play independently, with its own timeline and events.
These screenshots are from Chrome DevTools. Interestingly, Chrome was less-affected by this issue despite having notably-larger GC events as well. I'm not sure how long Safari was taking, but it felt like up to 1 second in Safari 6 in some cases.
In the first case, the GC event is for 9.3 MB and takes 25 msec - blowing the 16 msec / 60fps ideal framerate budget.
In the case where audio is muted and inactive, the first GC event to happen is for 3.6 MB and takes 1.9 msec.
As Mythbusters' Adam Savage would say, "Well there's your problem!"
The solution to this is to simply create a pool of sound objects and rotate through them, if the play() rate is such that the sounds would need to overlap. While this will consume more memory (if not shared/reused by the browser) up front, it should prevent a lot of dynamic memory allocation and resulting expensive garbage collection events.
In fact, most sounds (like machine gun fire) are short enough that multi-shot is not even needed.
Maybe those guys were right about writing JavaScript more like C++ after all, static and all that.

This is my second wooden puzzle, also from my best fd as birthday gift. I opened this box on my birthday and started yesterday. Finished it in 18 hours.. I mean straight 18 hours. It was actually my first time to stay up and do puzzles all night long until this morning at 9.. needed to leave my fd's house the next day.

This painting is full of details and very flowery settings. It was harder than I thought. 505 wooden piece is a challenge due to puzzle shapes and irregular edges. (I finished my edges until the last piece). I was doing this in hurry thus didn't realize how amazing this painting really looks like until I finished it.
There were about 50 Whimsy pieces, very interesting and nice cutting. I will take a picture of back if I manage to flip that over.
De berging van de bultrug op de Vliehors had nog enige voeten in aarde. Het dier was binnen een paar uur na de ontdekking onder het zand begraven, omdat burgermeester van der Mark (r.) niet wist dat het om een bijzondere aanspoeling ging.
Een ter zake kundige medewerker van het plaatselijke museum werd niets gevraagd, en toen deze ongevraagd zijn kennis deelde, werd hier niets mee gedaan.

Nee, van der Mark had gehoord van het geëxplodeerde potviskadaver in Taiwan, en zag in dit vers dode exemplaar dezelfde gevaren.
Dus moest het sofort onder de grond, en dat Defensie dit kon doen was ook weer meegenomen, want dat scheelde de gemeente Vlieland weer kosten.
En zo ging van der Mark (6 oktober 1946, goed babyboom jaar) de geschiedenis in als de burgemeester die een zeldzame aangespoelde walvis meteen onder de grond stopte, en de dag daarop weg gaf aan buureiland Texel.

Als de Vlielanders niet zo benepen waren geweest, dan hadden ze ook wel begrepen dat hij als voorzitter van het stembureau geen nattigheid voelde toen zijn kroegvrienden met vervalste stemmachtigingen, allen geadresseerd aan inmiddels vertrokken medewerkers van het Strandhotel van zijn vriend Harry, voor zijn tafel in het stembureau verschenen.
Als de Vlielanders wat vaker over de heg hadden gekeken, dan hadden ze ook wel gesnapt waarom Robert Dries zijn eigen bestemmingsplan aan zijn laars lapte, en een vriend uit Zeeland toestemming gaf drie strandhuisjes op het strand van Vlieland te plaatsen. Maar zo'n bescheiden proef -drie huisjes, die drie maanden zouden blijven staan- moest toch kunnen? Bij innovatieve projecten moet je nu eenmaal ruim denken, anders komt er nooit wat van de grond. Bovendien deed hij het voor zijn vriend uit Zeeland, die hij in het borrel circuit van zijn toenmalige vriendin, een dijkgravin uit Zeeland, had ontmoet, en voor zijn vriend Tjerk van bouwbedrijf Dijkstra, die mocht de huisjes bouwen.
Vlielanders zijn namelijk een stelletje verwaande sukkels met een horizon die niet verder reikt dan tot de vloedlijn.
Als wij wat wereldser waren geweest, dan hadden we deze regent namelijk wel begrepen.
Dan zouden wij de vriendjespolitiek, het willekeurig toepassen van wetgeving, het met minachting spreken over je burgers, het eigengereide optreden, het niet groeten, enzovoort, dat zouden wij allemaal snappen.
Maar, helaas, wij zijn dom en verwaand."
Nee, die Vlielanders zijn maar een benepen en aanmatigend volkje, kijk nu eens naar de conduite van Robert Dries van der Mark, het is toch onbegrijpelijk dat de Vlielanders deze burgemeester niet voor het leven als burgemeester van Vlieland hadden willen benoemen.

Podstawowe funkcje zbiornika wiążą się z gospodarką wodno-szlamową 3-ch Zakładów Wzbogacania Rud, które prowadzą wzbogacanie urobku górniczego rud miedzi metodą flotacji. Koncentraty miedzi uzyskane w wyniku wzbogacania stanowią jedynie około 4-6 % wagi urobku. Większość wydobytej skały jest odpadem, który zostaje zagospodarowywany na powierzchni.
Proces flotacji wymaga użycia dużej ilości wody – 4-5 m3/t nadawy rudy do flotacji. Odpady z flotacji są szlamem w stanie płynnym, w którym części stałe zajmują 6,5-8,7% objętości. Odpady są transportowane rurociągami na składowisko Żelazny Most. W składowisku następuje sedymentacja fazy stałej, a woda sklarowana jest ujmowana i ponownie kierowana do ZWR-ów. Woda cyrkuluje stale w obiegu pomiędzy ZWR-ami i składowiskiem.
Roczna wielkość deponowanych odpadów z flotacji waha się od 20 do 26 mln ton, z czego prawie 75 % wykorzystywanych jest do dalszej nadbudowy, a jedynie 25 % podlega procesowi unieszkodliwiania. Składowisko „Żelazny Most” jest obecnie jedynym miejscem deponowania odpadu z flotacji dla wszystkich kopalń, co powoduje, że stanowi ono kluczowe ogniwo technologiczne, bez którego produkcja koncentratu miedziowego byłaby niemożliwa.
Obok podstawowej funkcji, jaką jest utylizacja odpadów, akwen utworzony w centralnej części składowiska „Żelazny Most” pełni jednocześnie funkcję osadnika klarującego wody nadosadowe użytkowane w obiegu flotacji, a ze względu na dużą pojemność również zbiornika retencyjno-dozujacego nadmiar wody kopalniano-technologicznej w obiegu. Od 1978 r., metodą hydrotechniczną (okresowo), nadmiar wody odprowadzany jest do Odry.
Źródłem uciążliwości ze strony składowiska „Żelazny Most” były unoszone okresowo, przy sprzyjających warunkach wietrznych, pyły z przesuszonych powierzchni zbiornika. Już w 1984 r. podjęto działania zapobiegające pyleniu. Wprowadzono „kurtyny wodne” – systemy rurociągów ze zraszaczami, zabezpieczanie plaż roztworami wodnymi emulsji asfaltowej przy użyciu śmigłowców i specjalistycznych pojazdów oraz systematyczne obudowy biologiczne zapory.
Składowisko „Żelazny Most” jest zasadniczym elementem zamkniętego obiegu technologicznego wód mineralizowanych KGHM, ich nadmiar kierowany jest do rzeki Odry. System oczyszczalni skutecznie chroni przed zanieczyszczeniem zawiesiną i metalami ciężkimi, a rurociągi umieszczone w dnie rzeki umożliwiają równomierne wymieszanie wód. Na bieżąco prowadzone są obserwacje i badania monitorujące zanieczyszczenie powietrza atmosferycznego, gleb i roślin, wód powierzchniowych i podziemnych oraz stanu zdrowotnego zwierząt gospodarskich, co stanowi podstawę do prowadzenia programów działań zmierzających do poprawy stanu środowiska.

Responsible for all site stability, scalability, speed, and security issues. System is built on OPAL (Oracle PHP Apache Linux). When OPAL is found lacking, responsible for decision to move parts to Java layer.
Solved site stability and scalability issues allowing for virality curve to grow site from 18 million registered users (January 2007) to well over 80 million registered users (March 2008).
Rearchitected site performance allowing a growth from 830 million monthly page views (Feburary 2008) to over 7.2 billion monthly pageviews (May 2009) while reducing the web server count in half.
Architecture made to securely transparently and dynamically recover from various security vulnerabilities (XSS, session fixation, cookie vulnerabilities), of which there have been many attacks on the site. Previously a database transaction that took weeks to complete had to be executed to deal with cleaning up after attacks.
Finished database partitioning (February 2007) to allow for site scalability.
Designed API to integrate with third parties (March 2007). Transformed it toboth an internal API and an Ajax/JSON one (February 2008) that is configurable, multiplexed, cacheable, and secure (XSRF, etc.). It is now used in every web page of the site as the DHTML library along with Yahoo User Interface (YUI) (supervised migration from various other frameworks starting in Feburary 2007).
Built the most popular dating application on the web in order to increase site engagement (May 2008). The application generates over 87 million page views, 17 million yes clicks, and 2.2 million matches every day (January 2009).
Built and deployed static content compiler (CSS, JS) to also be dynamically edge-cacheable (November 2008) while limiting both bytes and transaction numbers. Built and begun deployment on memcache-based dynamic cache for API and pages (the latter edge cacheable) that is generating an average of 3% extra server capacity a day (March 2009).
Help transition development from a waterfall release system (6 releases in 2006), to an agile one (27 releases in 2007), to a web-agile one (daily releases). Engineering codebase, team structure, work environment, and development process to reduce engineering churn from 100% a year when joining the company to <10%, while engineering team size has more than doubled in size.
This lead company to 17 months straight of profitability in the middle of economic downturn (since April 2008), top 80 website worldwide (Alexa, since November 2008, up from #320 in December 2007), #3 social network in advertising market share (HitWise, November 2008) #3 largest overall socal network in the United States (Nielsen NetRatings, December 2008), #3 and fastest growing social network in the United States in total daily users behind MySpace and Facebook, (comScore Media Metrix, February 2009), and #3 and fastest growing social network in the United States in time spent on site per user behind MySpace and Bebo (comScore Media Metrix, February 2009).
Al voor het derde jaar op rij probeert een scholekster eieren uit te broeden bij het land van Roel Luis.
Voor de derde keer naast een paal op nog geen twee meter vanaf de Postweg.
Ik fiets er een paar keer per dag bij langs op weg naar- en van mijn werk, en kan het dus goed bekijken.
De vorige keren is het broedsel mislukt; de scholekster moest er te vaak af lopen en op een gegeven moment waren de eieren weg.
Vermoedelijk door een van de vele kraaien gepakt die daar ook in de buurt zitten.
Het is daarom enigszins meelijwekkend om de vogel dit jaar weer een poging te zien ondernemen.
Het is weer gedoemd te mislukken, want de scholekster gaat ook dit jaar weer vaak van zijn nest af vanwege passerende wandelaars.
Natuurlijk ook weer wandelaars die hun hond los laten lopen.
Ik heb al nagedacht over hoe deze scholekster geholpen kan worden, maar ik zie geen oplossing.
Het zal dan vermoedelijk ook dit jaar weer niet goed komen.
Nu begreep ik van Anke dat er vrijwel geen een scholekster die in de weilanden west van het dorp broedt zijn jongen groot krijgt, deze worden vrijwel allemaal door de kraaien gepakt.
Jammer, want het gaat niet echt goed met de scholeksters.
Staatssecretaris Verdaas van Economische Zaken is opgestapt. Hij heeft aan het begin van de middag een verklaring afgelegd.
Verdaas is sinds begin vorige maand PvdA-staatssecretaris in het tweede kabinet-Rutte. Verdaas ligt al een tijdje onder vuur vanwege vragen over zijn declaratiegedrag als gedeputeerde in gelderland

Tot dat ogenblik was het record van kortstzittende staatssecretaris op een haar na twintig jaar in handen geweest van Charles Schwietert, die ingaande 8 november 1982 namens de VVD drie dagen staatssecretaris van Defensie was in het kabinet-Lubbers I .Drie dagen na zijn aantreden als staatssecretaris op 8 november 1982 trad Schwietert af. Zijn geloofwaardigheid was in het geding gekomen. De reden was dat hij in zijn curriculum vitae had opgenomen dat hij de titel van doctorandus droeg, terwijl hij nooit aan een universiteit was afgestudeerd. Ook beweerde hij ten onrechte luitenant te zijn geweest in het Nederlandse leger; hij was korporaal geweest.

The former Cinétol Theater in the Tolstraat in Amsterdam has been a Public Library for years. It opened as the Thalia during WWII. When it was renovated in 1954, it had a seating capacity of 592. The theater, an art house in it's latter years, closed on 26-08-1979.
Cor A. Koppies was a junior-projectionist at the cinema from 1954 until 1956, became the manager from 1961 - at the age of 25. He had worked as a projectionist and manager at other art houses inbetween. He soon played an important role in the art house scene at Cinétol and later at CineCenter which he also started in 1979 when Cinétol was to be demolished. He was also a distributor, introduced nightly screenings, booklets with film-info, teach-ins at the cinema as well as erotic and porn films in art houses.

I rarely leave projects unfinished, mostly because the "unfinished" part drives me nuts; unfortunately, this one slipped through the cracks. Demoed here in IE 6 (it almost worked in Mozilla/Phoenix at the time, save for some event handling.) A console.log()-style debug window is running to the left.
I got "so close" in this tribute to Scorched Earth (a PC-DOS classic game), and then hit a wall with a logic problem with multi-player where someone would die as the result of another's shot, they'd be removed from the player list, a turn would advance and then the "next" player would be skipped. In hindsight this should have been trivial, but I managed to muddle it up enough to frustrate myself to shelve the thing for a bit, and then it simply collected dust. Bah.
I'm occasionally reminded of this project, and briefly consider reviving it if only to get it finished. I was working on network play and chat before stopping, which lead to an early Comet prototype (which worked!)
The land was animated and "fell" like in the original DOS game too, and it was done by creating a ton of DIV elements. Yes, each slice of land is a 1-pixel-wide DIV element with varying height, randomly-generated at the start of each game.
Other fun parts: Making the tank's turrets with similar 1x1-pixel elements, and moving the turret in real-time as you adjust the angle/power on the HUD similar to the DOS game. (I never got around to doing this in the status window, apparently.)
The themes are separate CSS stylesheets, a sort of trend at the time (recall the CSS stylesheet switcher script?).. They actually worked quite well.
This was a fun experiment in object-oriented JavaScript following the fun of DHTML Arkanoid, though that one had the benefit of being finished and released.

This is café Eik en Linde. The other day i walked in, drank a Duvel and took some pictures.
At the bar people were gossiping about Robert Jasper Grootveld, de rookmagiër uit Amsterdam. Grootveld was a preluder to PROVO, an anti authoritarian movement in the 1960's that - whats in a name? - tried to provoke the uptight Dutch pre-war establishment. Last years he has been building styrofoam islands to help the world with rising waterlevels. According to the gossippers at the bar Grootveld had ran downhill and had become a lonely man
Eik en Linde is the pub for many worldimprover, provocateur, artists and writers. Grootveld belonged to the clientele for many years. I have this Eik en Linde photocollage composed a while back .. i like it. Tonight i read Robert Jasper Grootveld died, so i think here is a memorable occassion to post.

It's important to design in context. In other words, the environment in which the design is produced should, as closely as possible, match the context in which the final product will be used.
In this case the development team was based in a heritage centre (think museum/visitor centre) in Brighton.
We made a special effort to test the application with touch screens as this was to be the delivery medium for our kiosk software.
