Site of the ancient oracle.

Delphi, IN

A sectional view of the well preserved Stadium at Delphi.

Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and became a major site for the worship of the god Apollo after he slew Python, a dragon who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth.

Delphi's Archaeological Museum contains a wealth of treasures excavated at the site of Ancient Delphi, just next door. Without a doubt, it is one of Greece's finest museums of classical art and antiquities. This photograph is of a detail of the most famous piece by far in the museum's collections, a bronze statue known as the 'Charioteer'. An extraordinarily accomplished work of art, it was dedicated by the Sicilian tyrant Polyzalos following his triumph in the Pythian Games of 478 or 474 BC.

The next stop on our vacation was Delphi. A place of worship and healing in the ancient Greek world. According to myth, Zeus set two eagles to fly around the world and they met at Delphi and found a pointed rock that was to be the navel of the world, thus Delphi was the center of the world.

The oracle of Delphi resided in the temple of Apollo, where it has since been determined there are gases emanating from the ground that can cause some hallucinogenic properties. Those with questions would pose them to the oracle for answers, however, the answers needed to be interpreted by the priests of the temple. The answers were rarely straight forward and frequently confused if mythology is to be believed.

This was the start of my biggest surprise about the geography of Greece. Everything is on the side of a cliff!

This building is the treasury of Athens that was built to commemorate the victory of the Greeks at the battle of Marathon. Of course in the writings on the building, the Athenians took full credit for the victory and ignored the contributions of the other city states.

The theater at Delphi, Greece, is build further up the hill from the Temple of Apollo and it presented the seated audience with a spectacular view of the entire sanctuary below and the valley beyond. It was built in the 4th c. B.C. our of local Parnassus limestone and was remodeled several times subsequently.

Its 35 rows can accommodate around five thousand spectators who in ancient times enjoyed plays, poetry readings, and musical events during the various festivals that took place periodically at Delphi. The lower tiers of seats were built during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Amazing location. Amazing history, of which the well-known and misunderstood oracle is only one part. See, e.g., en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delphi.

Sanctuary of Athena

Delphi hatte in der Antike mehrere Schatzhäuser der verschiedenen griechischen Stämme. Es war somit eine Art antike Schweiz, in der man seine Schätze deponieren konnte.
