If something defines Amsterdam is it's narrow houses along the canals.

It never suprises me to realize that very few old buildings in Amsterdam are actually straight, if any!

'Roid Week 2012 - Day 1

The idea of an election is much more interesting to me than the election itself...The act of voting is in itself the defining moment.

~ Jeff Melvion, Northern Exposure, Democracy in America, 1992

Today is election day...your vote matters...VOTE!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - Greek proverb

The Old Post Office Building at the corner of Clinch & Market Streets in Downtown Knoxville was built circa 1869-73 of Tennessee marble in the Renaissance Revival style. Alfred B. Mullett served as supervising architect for the design & construction. The building is three stories with fairly straight-fronted walls except for the small projection defining the entrance areas. Rusticated quoins contrast with the smooth surface of the walls. First floor openings, which are arched with keystones, are joined by a string course. Second & third story windows in the projected or entrance areas are treated with a complete entablature above each; those windows on the recessed surfaces are framed only in architraves. The roof behind the heavy cornice is not visible from the street. Originally, the building housed the post office on the first floor, with courtrooms and other federal offices on the second & third floors. There is a west wing that was added in the early 20th century. However, in 1933, the post office moved to a new, larger building and this old structure began to be used as offices for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

At the time of its construction in 1869-1873, this Old Post Office Building in Knoxville was considered one of the finest structures in East Tennessee and is now one of the few early buildings of distinction preserved in the city. In addition, on March 20, 1973, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). All the information above was found on the original documents submitted for listing consideration that are located here: npgallery.nps.gov/NRHP/AssetDetail/a72d7c90-e49a-4a86-a08...

A wingspan of 12-20 mm makes this the smallest butterfly in North America and one of the very smallest in the world. Shown here on one of its hostplants (atriplex semibaccata) at the Don Edwards NWR at Alviso California.

I have a sharper image of a butterfly of this species at www.flickr.com/photos/25673579@N04/28730652937/in/datepos... but yesterday I could not find one in ideal light, and the only one I found more than 8" [20 cm] off the ground flew off when I approached.

This is Batemans Bay in New South Wales in Australia. A beautiful clear sky and warm colours for sunrise. We're not often on the east coast of Australia so civil twlight pre-sunrise shots like this are always a treat.

I chose this photo to represent this quote as I feel the dew drops depict her tears - and the web, her captivity. However, looking at the web today, you see the beauty in its intricacies and the tears have turned to gems.

Whether it’s close to home or in a different state or a different country. Trees are in their own class of beauty. If they’re very tall or not it really doesn’t matter. They help define Nature. Trees can help create great landscapes. Trees can beautify sunrises or sunsets. “Trees Define Beauty” so much so that man needs to plant two trees to replace every tree taken down. Planting trees helps to keep the soil healthy and keep the air healthy to breathe. Gratitude and Kindness can grow on trees too so plant a soon. Where we live now we plant a tree for every year we live here.

"The best part of beauty is that which no picture can express"

Francis Bacon - English Philosopher (1561-1626)

(for Macro Mondays : Defining Beauty)

The Common Gull, Mew Gull or Sea Mew[(Larus canus) is a medium-sized gull which breeds in northern Asia, northern Europe and northwestern North America. It migrates further south in winter. Its name does not indicate that it is an abundant species, but that during the winter it feeds on common land, short pasture used for grazing.

Adults are 40-46 cm long, obviously smaller than the Herring Gull, and slightly smaller than the Ring-billed Gull, also differing from this in its shorter, more tapered bill with a more greenish shade of yellow, as well as being unmarked during the breeding season. The body is grey above and white below. The legs are greenish-yellow. In winter, the head is streaked grey, and the bill often has a poorly-defined blackish band near the tip (sometimes sufficiently obvious to cause confusion with Ring-billed Gull). They have black wingtips with large white "mirrors". Young birds have scaly black-brown upperparts and a neat wing pattern, and grey legs. They take two to three years to reach maturity. The call is a high-pitched "laughing" cry.

Oscar Wilde... The Picture of Dorian Gray

I was battling the midges (my first experience with the little bastards) tyring to compose some images of this Old Bridge without tourits in the scene. My patience ran out so I later cloned them out ;-)

In this image you can see the Graham, Marsco, in the distance.

From Wiki: Grahams are defined as Scottish hills between 600 and 762 metres in height, with a minimum prominence, or drop, of 150 metres

What is LIFE ?

Does this sound like a strange question to you ?

Of course we all know what is meant by the word LIFE ?
