The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 ended slavery in Washington, DC, freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned them and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16, DC Emancipation Day.

In 2017, Emancipation Day is celebrated one week early.

Washington DC, Wednesday November 17, 2021.By my count around a thousand voting rights activists gathered in front of the White House to advocate for Congressional passage of The Freedom To Vote Act and The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. Most of the rally speakers railed against the filibuster and Biden's failure to end it because that is how Republicans can stand in the way of voting reforms and DC Statehood too.The crowd here today was multi-racial and multi-generational. Organizatons represented included MoCo DSA, People For The American Way, SEIU, Our Revolution, Black Voters Matter, League Of Women Voters and more. A hundred or so folks decided to be arrested by refusing to move from the sidewalk in front of the White House when asked to do so by the Police. The arrestees were courteously and quickly booked and immediately released.
