Good morning and Happy Dragonfly Thursday. Today's featured dragonfly is the female Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis), along with the male of which I included a photo in the comment section with another female for comparison purposes.
The female (and immature males) are mostly brown in color, with a double row of yellowish lines down the dorsal surface of the abdomen. There are also yellowish markings down each side of the abdomen as viewed laterally. Eyes of the females are green to brown, and as with the males, the face is white.
I hope you enjoy this short series on this very common North American dragonfly and find the commentary in the comment section informative.
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly great day.

Meet "Dash," the older of two siblings raised on the Benjamin Frankling Parkway by the Franklin Institute female ("Mom") and her mate of two years ("T3".) The two youngsters fledged last week and are still enjoying regular food drops provided by their parents. Here Dash is stalking some bugs.
"He doesn't want to owe anybody, doesn't want anybody to owe him. He works for whoever pays the most. He's downright magic with anything that flies, and he can pick wing nuts off a tabletop with a blaster without scorching the finish. He's a good man to have at your back when the going gets hot—as long as your money lasts."

Nothing special about this guy as they are found in abundant numbers up and down the east coast (North America that is), but lucky for us they're quite handsome critters!
Though you could have a different opinion if you were a small flying bug like a mosquito.

Good morning everyone. And as the title indicates, presented today are some of my first Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) pics this season.
As across most of North America, the Blue Dasher is one of the most common dragonflies found here locally. Always in the top three in terms of numbers along with the Widow Skimmer and Eastern Pondhawk.
As for the photos in this set, they're a mixture of both gender including immatures. The above along with the last pic in the comment section are both adult males...albeit young adults. As for the rest of the pics, due to it being early in the season, they're of immatures.
Kind of a long series so please don't forget to click on "view previous comments" if you don't see the additional photos in the comment section. Even better, scroll to them by clicking on the arrow thingy to the right of the above pic. And if you want to view any picture in the comment section large all you have to do is click on it where you'll also find the full text describing this very common dragonfly.
Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you're having a truly nice week.

BCOL C40-8M 4601 is in charge of train 348 at West Chicago, IL. A cool pair of CN Dash 8's, in different body styles. This train was delayed over 3 hours as the train in front of it had a possible suicide attempt occur. Apparently the crew saw someone lay down on the tracks as they approached. They went into emergency and waited several hours for police to arrive and investigate what had actually happened. Finally on the move here, in a fresh dusting of snow. The 4601 is turning 29 years old. Trailing, CN 2008, started out as C&NW #8509, almost 30 years ago.

The Blue Dasher (Pachydiplax longipennis) is a dragonfly of the skimmer family. It is common and widely distributed in the United States.
Mature males develop a bluish-white pruinescence on the back of the abdomen and, in western individuals, on the thorax. They display this pruinescence to other males as a threat while defending territories at the edge of the water.
Although the species name longipennis means "long wings", the wings are not substantially longer than those of related species. Females do, however, have a short abdomen that makes the wings appear longer in comparison.
