Was talking to a friend on MSN on how to do bug shots with bright sky behind. I'd normally try this with fill flash in TV or AV modes but tend to get variable results. We looked at shots that Joserg (flickr member) has done and decided it looked like he was shooting in manual mode. So I quickly went outside and tried shooting ISO 100,1/200th, in M mode adjusting the aperture so I was about 1 stop underexposed on the sky and then used full flash. Seemed to give fairly reproducible results.

I have a soft spot for Dodge Darts, and we're not talking about on the top of my head! My Dad owned one and it was sort of my older brother's and my first car. Tough little bugger; my Dad wrecked it (hit while waiting at a light), my brother wrecked it (went off the road in a storm), and I T-boned another car that ran a stop sign. It survived all three encounters to live another day.

The "Orienter Darter" or "Indian Darter" (Anhinga Melanogaster), sometimes called snakebird, is a water bird and feeds mainly on fish. They use their sharply pointed bill to spear their prey when they dive; this is how they get the name darter. Darters spread their wings to dry by positioning themselves against the sun, after every dive.

The maie abdomen is red and slightly constricted near the front.

Females and immature males are yellowish brown . In both sexes the iegs are dark brown or black with a yellow stipe on the outside This very common species breeds in still water, and flies June - October, often travelling far from the water. It perches on shrubs and hedgerows and also on the ground. Most red darters seen in England are likely to belong to this species. Individuals from the bogs and moors of Scotland and Northern Ireland have more extensive black markings on the sides of the thorax and are sometimes treated as a separate species,...

A lovely male Common Darter dragonfly obligingly sat on the rail of a wooden bridge at Woods Mill, so I was able to take a photo of him. I had to be patient because he flew up several times and turned to look - accusingly, I swear - at me. Eventually he must have decided I was harmless because he settled down again. I'd love to have taken a photo from the front, but he was on a bridge, so I'd have got a bit wet! :))
