As photographers, whether we know it or not, we all have some tendencies that we follow when we're looking to frame up a shot. If y'all haven't figured out yet, I LOVE pastoral rural scenes and working trains into landscapes. I was in Roanoke for other business this past fall, but Sunday was a stunningly beautiful day, and the temptation to get out with the camera was too much for me just to drive back to Alexandria. As many of my friends love to give me grief for, Shawsville is one of my absolute favorites places to watch trains. I was going to go for the traditional fence shot with this incredible late afternoon lighting when this orange tree caught my eye, and all I needed was a train. In absolutely perfect late afternoon lighting, NS 195 pulled the hill as the last fading rays cast over the fields of Shawsville.

Grey Heron, just missed a large fish and managed to bury its head in the mud and weeds at the bottom of the lake - looked like quite a struggle to get out again - still wearing quite a lot of it.
Had the shutter speed pretty high in case he/she caught something.

This 9-Point drop tine Whitetail Buck was highly annoyed by a bumblebee that kept pestering him the other morning.
Comments not necessary, thanks for viewing.
Male Marsh Harrier (and Midges) back lit in the early morning sun. If this was black and white I could have probably pretended it was a snow storm.
Taken in Norfolk.

I couldn't resist posting this one for [https://www.flickr.com/photos/damndan] even though the tree ruins it.

Longing to be back in the mountains, so thought I'd revisit the archives from our trip last summer to the Canadian Rockies. This one was taken along the shore of Moraine Lake shortly after sunrise in Banff National Park.

Conrail font doesn't mingle on former Southern high hoods, it just doesn't look right. Take away the Conrail influenced number boards, other added modern appliances and this SD40-2 on train, G19 is right at home stepping through the 1970's Southern Railway era infrastructure at CP Grove in McDonough, Georgia.
