Being an Iowa State student at the time (home of the Cyclones), we felt obligated to hike along this path. Unlike most canyons this one wasn't formed by erosion or glaciers. The floor of this canyon was at one time level with the surrounding rim but has sunk in at some point in history. The geological name for this behavior is a graben. It typically happens when the earths crust pulls apart. This part of Canyonlands has a plethora of these formations and it's quite amazing to walk through them and imagine how powerful the earthquake must have been to create such a depression.
