One year on from Cyclone Aila striking Bangladesh in May 2009, more than 200,000 people remained homeless and many still suffered from an acute scarcity of safe drinking water. Here, Sondha Rani Mondol collects clean water from a water point provided by WaterAid and local partner Sushilan.

Out the window of Velocity, where the party takes place, the world's only all-wood roller coaster rises up under brooding rainclouds. Right at the end of the parade this afternoon, those clouds opened up and drenched us all, with a fury.

I'm an official roving photographer at the Mermaid Parade Ball afterparty following this year's torrential Coney Island Mermaid Parade - my assignment is to take pictures of the crowd and the happenings. It's a pretty joyous job.

Cyclone Gabrielle, one of the most damaging cyclones to come to New Zealand, wreaked havoc on the north island on the 13th and 14th of February. Although parts of Auckland were badly affected, most in our area got off lightly. We had to do some emergency surgery on this tree beside our house when a big split appeared and the high winds threatened to send it crashing down. Luckily Brendan and Peter had the right tools to get the job done efficiently. For the past week we have been hearing and seeing the destruction caused on the east coast where the flood waters engulfed houses up to their roofs, communities were cut off and cities were without power and means of any communication for days. So far 11 people have died, but it seems likely the death toll will increase. Worryingly over a thousand people are still reported as uncontactable, we can only hope that most of those will be located safe and sound.

People on boats arrive at the town of Bogalay, on the bank of one strand of the Irrawaddy river, southwest of Yangon May 8, 2008. Survivors with harrowing tales of villages smashed by cyclone Nargis are paddling wooden boats to the Myanmar town of Bogalay to find whole streets destroyed and food and water scarce. Almost no aid has reached one of the hardest-hit towns in the Irrawaddy delta of around 50,000 inhabitants, where the storm tore rice mills apart and washed away fishing boats.
