This was the image which many Reddit users (including myself) elected to upload onto their social networking profiles across the internet.

It was quite something to see my Facebook friends list suddenly display this in various places. Not as many as I would have hoped, but still a significant number.

One of my friends reported that almost his entire friends list had this image repeated. Perhaps I just have the wrong friends and family!

They were the people who started it all! The idea for an internet strike came from the forums of Reddit. They set the date and challenged the rest of cyberspace to join them.

The internet said 'kk'.

On January 18th 2012, Reddit displayed this page for 12 hours. It happened globally.

The MangaBullet club Guns and Games went on strike to protest SOPA and PIPA.

On January 18th 2012, the forums were rendered unavailable and the rest was as censored.

(NB the administration/moderators had no way of disabling the member board nor gallery.)

On January 18th 2012, every word of the TorrentFreak on-line newspaper was censored. They also displayed a notice explaining what was going on.

They probably win the prize for attention to detail too. I couldn't help but notice that they had even censored their meta-tags! The tab/toolbar title was just a series of stars.

Coco-Cola social media case study is one of the best examples available out there. The company was also named by Slate’s The Big Money as the brand “making the best use of Facebook,” and their well-publicized Expedition 206 campaign is billed as the company’s largest social media project ever. Coco-Cola has used several ways such as blogging, sharing photos/videos, tweets, social media apps to promote their brand and achieves huge success.

Lxnen is one of the musicians/artists whom SOPA/PIPA sought to protect. He patently thought the cost was too high.

On January 18th 2012, his website displayed only this notice.

André Brock, one of the preeminent scholars of Black cyberculture, explains his approach to Black digital practice through the frame of "joy" or jouissance. Writing about Black cyberculture often revolves around oppression, resistance, labor, or consumption. Brock, however, argues that Black digital practice's deviation from technocultural practice and desire can be understood as a feature, not a bug. He proposes that Black Twitter, in particular, offers a space for Black joy to originate, participate, and conversate, leading to surplus libidinal, communal, and political energies powering movements such as Black Lives Matter.

Wikipedia was one of the internet giants, which participated in the strike on January 18th 2012.

As the third most used website on the planet, it was possibly responsible for getting the message out to the most people.

Twitter certainly erupted with the bewildered reactions of some of Wikipedia's less aware users. At least two Twitter accounts kept the internet amused and entertained by retweeting the shock as self-absorbed children found out.

Got this used from Amazon for about $8 (including shipping). This 1994 publication should be in all cybergeek's library. It's an artifact of a time when the Internet first became publicly accessible. Trebor thinks of it as a search engine before one existed. I see it as a precursor of wikipedia.

My second foray into Second Life - I found this kind of library of cyberculture theory. Finally in a virtual world I manage to get the mullet of my dreams, and do some light reading.

As we all know, the internet runs door-to-door through a series of tubes, not wires like these. Hear Ted Stevens explain by listening to Educast #60.

I was unable to totally disable my articles, because of the mechanics of the site.

I did turn my profile dark, on January 18th 2012, to protest SOPA and PIPA.
