2009 August 4 - While casting about for a truly heavy duty paper cutter that I can use to slice the bindings off my books, I came across this old-fashioned box cutter in the hardware aisle of Fisher Hawaii. It's made in USA, all metal and just 54c!

Toss in a box of 100 single edge razor blades for $7 and I now have 200 usable cutting edges because the razor blade can be turned and both corners used.

Guess I'll try this with a metal ruler (and clamps?) before dropping $300+ on an industrial cutter. :P

OK, so what's so bl***y special about a English made Stanley no 4?

Well to me they are not only good planes but they can sometimes provide a challenge as well as another opportunity to improve my restoration skills.

I clean a lot of old tools and hand planes are some of the mostdemanding in the sense that it contains of many parts - small and large - and it has serval corners and areas which are difficult to reach.

In this particular case I did seriously consider NOT buying this plane. It came with a broken and possibly not original rear handle with an awful repair and it had a hole drilled through the left cheek. Also I didn't need a no 4.

But I do feel sorry for these abandoned planes. And when the seller said all he wanted was to get rid of it, I felt someone had to take care of it.

So, three hours later including honing, repainting the body, glueing and reshaping the rear handle. It is still a plane with a hole in the side and a poorly repaired handle. And the paint work is not comparable to japanning, but to me the important thing is that this plane has a good flat sole, a lengthy and sharp cutter and it is again every bit as serviceable as any other mid range no 4.

This is one of our paper cutters at work. I don't know how many tons of pressure it has, but it can cleave through 6" of paper in one swoop, so I am pretty sure it would cut through car doors and stuff. Unfortunately, they won't let me find out for sure.

Looks better here!
