The 100 Strangers Project
For some reason, I always seem to stumble upon a stranger rather than seek one out. I was going for lunch with a couple of friends when we passed by a local bootmaker, Mike Karnes, in Saint Jo, Texas and to my surprise he was giving a class on bootmaking. Shortly after we were seated at the restaurant, the class came in for lunch as well and we shared some friendly banter.
As we were leaving, one of the fellas asked if we would like to come in and take a look around the shop to see how boots are made. "Well... heck, yeah! And can I take a few photos?" And the answer was an enthusiastic "Yes!".
Unfortunately, the light was quite dim, so I increased my ISO and started shooting. That was when I struck up a conversation with Drew. Drew is a school teacher and is on summer vacation. He has been teaching economics, U.S. history, and government now for about 13 years and decided to spend a couple weeks this summer learning bootmaking. Following this class, he will have his very own pair of custom made cowboy boots to start off the school year. I thought that was so cool! Sure hope he tells his students about his summer experience.
Drew's dad was also in the class and has made a pair of boots in a previous class he had taken. He showed me a photo on his phone of the boots he made... and they were gorgeous!
So I would like you to meet Drew as he sits at his sewing machine working on his very first pair of handmade cowboy boots. I hope he will take a photo so I can see the results of his new found hobby!
