This flamboyant neo-gothic monument was designed by the architect Louis De Curte as a tribute to Leopold I, the first king of Belgium, at the initiative of his son Leopold II.
It was inaugurated on July 12 1880 on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Independence of Belgium.

Ce monument néo-gothique flamboyant a été conçu par l'architecte Louis De Curte en hommage à Léopold Ier, premier roi des Belges, à l'initiative de son fils Léopold II.
Il fut inauguré le 12.07.1880 à l’occasion du cinquantenaire de l’Indépendance de la Belgique.

Dit flamboyante neogotische monument werd ontworpen door architect Louis De Curte als eerbetoon aan Leopold I, de eerste Koning der Belgen, op initiatief van zijn zoon Leopold II.
Het werd ingehuldigd op 12 juli 1880 ter gelegenheid van de vijftigste verjaardag van de Belgische Onafhankelijkheid.

Correva l’anno 1852, quando il Podestà Muzio de Tommasini diramò un avviso comunale dove annunciava il progetto del parco. La voglia di divertimento della Belle Époque vide il Giardino diventare sede giornaliera di concerti e gare musicali, con bande e musicisti di spicco.
Oggigiorno il Giardino Pubblico ha smarrito quest’originaria vocazione allo spettacolo, nonostante sopravviva nei mesi estivi il cinema all’aperto.

Public Garden, a green legacy of Trieste that was.
It was the year 1852, when the Podestà Muzio de Tommasini issued a municipal notice announcing the park project. The desire for entertainment of the Belle Époque saw the Garden become the daily venue for concerts and musical competitions, with bands and prominent musicians.
Nowadays the Public Garden has lost this original vocation for entertainment, despite the fact that the open-air cinema survives in the summer months.

the genus is a member of the subfamily Cypripedioideae, commonly referred to as the "lady's-slippers" or "slipper orchids" due to the unusual shape of the pouch-like labellum of the flower. The pouch traps insects seeking nectar, and to leave again they have to climb up past the staminode, behind which they collect or deposit pollinia.
