Glass Paint on Mirror

Spending numerous hours on the internet daily, I use it for socialising, researching and keeping up with current affairs. This has lead me to a psychological interest in social media and how technology has changed the way we represent ourselves within the digital world, both aesthetically and integrationally, through a number of different expressive visuals like photography and written text.

My practice combines collaborating various surfaces with mixed media to represent what we immerse ourselves in digitally. I’m creating these visuals on 2 dimensional planes to express my emotional and personal response of my own development within the current digital era producing that fleeting moment of self awareness through the subject of Selfies and consciously edited portrayals that is shared daily on the internet.

We sit in front of the many different screens everyday, monitors, TV’s, tablets and mobile phones, and it is generally a solo experience. I am using my own impression to portray cyber space and how we fail to control where our online uploads and information goes. Using mirrors I am bouncing reflections within a confined space that I have constructed to have the same infinitive quality of the world wide web and to recapture that solitary experience within the space of the work.

I saw this work being done, and thought it looked a little "Heath Robinson". It definitely had a DIY look to it - not the outcome at least, but the way it was being done.

A week or so before this happened, I saw the "builders" having a bit of a "heated debate" with the scaffolders.

Anyway I walked past there last night and thought it looked rather nice - a plasma TV up on the wall and ground floor "hollowed out" as it were. And this evening? Well, here's the story on BBC News...

Thought of using concepts in this weekend challenge thread "Tattoos" on the Sri Lanka Photographers group.

Future Magazine was one of a number of post-WW2 publications that aimed to take a view on contemporary current affairs emphasising the opportunities for the reconstruction needed to build a modern world. This issue "Britain in 1955" attempts to look forward to the next decade to see what has developed. The magazine was printed by Adprint Ltd. the interesting printing and publishing company with pre-war German emigré involvement.

This double colour plate is from the Graeter London Plan of 1944, a vast document that looked to reconstruct a modern, less crowded and rigourously planned modern city to sweep away the decay of Victorian slums and wartime damage. One of several such plans that were part of the revolution that helped underpin the Town & Country Planning Act and the New Towns Act this plate by Peter Shepheard shows an idyllic Lee or Lea Valley at Broxbourne with gravel pits repurposed as leisure sites. There would be a Lee Valley Plan and indeed much of the valley was encompassed in the Lee Valley Park. Also shown are the sweep of the new arterial roads effectively equating to what would become the M25 and M11, the latter planned to head north towards Harlow this way but whose route was changed by the MOT to the Roding Valley and the east of the New Town before construction.

The view from Hertfordshire encompassed Essex to the left and Middlesex to the right as the boundaries straddled the river valley, a natural boundary for centuries, here.

First off, a caveat, I am not in any way FOR nor AGAINST this particular protest. This is strictly a photojournalistic shot of a current affair in world politics at the moment.

Every morning driving in to work, I come across this group of Falun Gong supporters protesting in front of the PRC consulate. This protest must have been going on for more than half a decade as I have always remembered them being there. At one point, they even built elaborate huts in front of the consulate (on public property I might add) so as to house their supporters for the daily protest.

I for one, am not for nor against them as I view this matter to be 100% a PRC (Mainland Chinese) internal affair/politics and really have nothing much to do with Canada. That said, being Canadian, and a Vancouverite, I'm glad city council finally enforced the law to tear down their makeshift hut that they build right on the sidewalk (which is public property) outside of the Chinese consulate. While I respect their right to protest, I do not respect their right to occupy public land for their convenience/purpose. Their current form of protest is much more palatable for a Vancouverite as this involves them coming early in the morning, setting up their banners and then taken them down at the end of the day.

AFGHANISTAN CRISIS

A powerful earthquake has killed at least 1,000 people and injured 1,500 in eastern Afghanistan, an official of the ruling Taliban told the BBC.

The Taliban appealed for international help for the rescue effort as pictures showed landslides and ruined mud-built homes in the province of Paktika.

The quake struck shortly after 01:30 (21:00 GMT Tuesday) as people slept.

Hundreds of houses were destroyed by the magnitude 6.1 event, which occurred at a depth of 51km (32 miles).
