.... African Canadian Torontonians, stand in solidarity with citizens of Baltimore and want Toronto's new police chief, Mark Saunders .... Toronto's first black police chief .... to end the policy of "carding" Saunders has addressed the issue of "carding” — stopping and documenting members of the public not suspected of a crime, a practice that disproportionately affects young black men. Saunders insisted carding is a necessary tool that enables Toronto Police Officers to tap into the street gang culture and gather information that would otherwise be “extremely complex” to obtain. Saunders is well aware of the outrage over carding and vowed to work with affected communities and with his officers to ensure everyone is treated fairly and with respect. However, Saunders stressed he “will not compromise community safety” and has no plans to abolish “carding” ....

That's Getter Robo (ゲッターロボ - Gettâ Robo) in front of the TV, which shows CNN reporting about the looming bird flu threat.

The water was still brown from the rainstorms and the boil water advisory was still in place, when the air got cold and the snow started to fall and fall and fall. We all had to dig out our hiking boots to get around.

These days in Thailand, it is difficult to say anything at all about politics, without statements being twisted by one side or the other. There seems to be very little space for constructive debate.

What intrigues me is the way political arguments are framed - what is said, how it is said, and of course, what is left unsaid. And how images are framed.

So here is a random series from recent demonstrations in Bangkok. These photos are from recent demonstrations in Bangkok against a bill that would have given a blanket amnesty for all 'politically' related crimes of the last 7 years - including those convicted of corruption. This is the main issue of concern in the framing of these demonstrations, with a backdrop of Thai flags. It is interesting that other issues of political concern are not voiced so vigorously.

The handheld banner say "Thais united against the bill that grants amnesty to those who have robbed the country"

At long last, after months of sacrifice and hard work, after countless ups and downs, after a decade of turmoil and distrust, the day has come. Today, Barack Obama, a man who has come to prove that the American Story does not belong to one skin color or one class or one region, has become our new President of the United States of America. It is an honor to say that I worked to help elect him and a privilege to live in this country at the moment it became possible. Do I believe that everything wrong in this country will suddenly get better? Of course not. However, I do believe that the energy surrounding today from all corners of the nation is a sign that we may finally, as one people, have the attitude and the optimism necessary to start changing our direction towards a better path. It will of course take time, but it should be a wonderful process to partake in and I look forward to doing my part.

God Bless and protect our new President.

So a few weekends ago (sometime in early January, 2014) I drove up to Folsom Lake because I had heard that the water level was a tad low due to our little drought problem. They weren't kidding. The muddy mess behind this sign used to be Browns Ravine Marina. Now it's Browns Ravine... well... ravine/mud puddle. I sure hope we get some rain soon, but I'm grateful for yet another memorable sign that tells an important, if tragic, story.

This girl has more to worry about than her Facebook pictures, but during her murder trial Social Networking played a HUGE role in the evidence. They looked at when, where, how, and who were involved in all of her pictures. When her status' were updated. Payed attention to what days she was out partying when her 3 year old daughter was reported missing. in this fast-paced, technological, and internet reliant world we are living in, the Judicial System has had to keep up.

Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

Louisiana State University Professor Ed Overton leaned out of a fishing boat and dunked a small jar just beneath the surface. “God what a mess,” he said under his breath.

On the 20th of April an explosion erupted on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf, killing 11 people and injuring 17. The real damage was yet to come as gallons of oil started pouring out of the well. Since then, estimates of over 200, 000 gallons of oil are leaking every day. The oil slick is now the size of Delaware and Maryland combined. On shorelines the damage stretches 241 km, from Dauphin Island, Alabama to Grand Isle, Louisiana. It is now affecting the marshland that stretches along the coastland.

These marshlands or wetlands are home to about 34, 000 Brown pelicans and seagulls, which are right now, trying to dive through the oil-soaked ocean to get to their food supply. Thousands of migratory birds travelling from South America making their way north, traditionally stop off at the Gulf Coast for two to three weeks are now in danger. Sea turtles, manatees and dolphins are attempting to come up for air through the slick.

There are three species that have been highlighted as most endangered by the slick, the Brown pelican who recently was just taken off the endangered list, the Bluefin tuna and the Kemp's Ridley sea turtle. The explosion could not have happened at a worse time as all these species are now returning to the Gulf area for breeding, expecting their home to be the way it was when they left it.
