Truth or Dare

Friday, September 21 at 6:00 pm

Directed by John LeBret

The ultimate performance experiment: for one night only and for six continuous hours, performers engage in a playful game of truth or dare. Audience members may come and go as they please, but won’t know what happens unless they make it through the duration.

HopKins Black Box theatre

Louisiana State University’s HopKins Black Box theatre opens its 2007-8 season with “Truth or Dare.” On Friday, September 21, the Black Box features the one-night-only engagement of a performance experiment in real time. Beginning at 6:00 PM and continuing until midnight, four performers will take the stage in an unrehearsed marathon game of “truth or dare.”

Unabashedly raw, the performance draws on avant-garde experiments carried out over long durations. “Endurance art,” most popular in the 1970’s, challenged its audiences to question the very nature of art itself, often by putting the artist’s body through a kind of test.

“Truth or Dare” also harkens back to classic American contests of endurance such as dance and Hula-hoop marathons and forward to the current popular fascination with reality TV. As New York Times performance critic Roberta Smith asks, “What is "Fear Factor" if not endurance art - performance's hard-core subgenre - with bikinis and more viewers?”

Audiences are invited to join in the challenge and see what unfolds during this daring experiment in the Hopkins Black Box theatre, 137 Coates Hall on LSU’s Baton Rouge campus. The box office will open at 5:30 pm and remain open until 11:30 pm on Friday, September 21. Admission is by suggested donation of $5.00 and includes in/out privileges for the entire performance.

Seating

The HopKins Black Box is a fairly intimate space with chair-on-riser seating. Audience capacity ranges between 50-100 people, as determined by the director of each show.

All seating is “general” although accommodations are made for people who need or request them.

Typically, we open the house 10 minutes before the start of each show. When attendance is heavy, patrons are admitted according to their ticket numbers, the lowest numbers first.

As the director prefers, late arrivals may or may not be admitted to the theatre once the show starts.

Parking

There are parking lots directly adjacent to Coates Hall. For the Friday and Saturday night shows and the Sunday matinee, the lots are typically free of traffic and you’ll find plenty of places to park. For the Wednesday and Thursday night shows, these same lots are busy and finding a place to park is more difficult. If the lots are full, we suggest you try the union parking lot located directly across the street from Coates Hall or additional spaces on Tower Drive.

To access Coates Hall by wheelchair, park in the north or south lots of Coates Hall.

imagine a world without free knowledge.

I think it’s cool that my art has a role in this SOPA & PIPA bill thing! This morning, I got on Flickr and saw the Darken Flickr Campaign. I had only briefly heard about this before and figured politicians had it handled. I read up on it for a while at school and as the day went on, there were more and more tweets from kids my age freaking out! So many people thought that, after only reading tweets and exploring twitter for a while, they knew enough to have a valid opinion on the matter. Of course, this annoyed me and right when I got home I ran to my computer and researched and talked to my mom about the bill! And of course the back of my mind was thinking and brainstorming for today’s photo! I found all my quarters and had just enough to buy three newspapers :) yes, I am that poor…

Anywho, if you don’t know much about this bill, read up on it!!!
