St. Mary's church in Ware, Hertfordshire, was enlarged during the 15th century by Margaret Beaufort, Henry VII's mother. Another royal lady, Joan of Kent, mother of king Richard II, rebuilt the even older church in 1380! Joan of Kent was the wife of Edward the Black Prince, and was popularly known as 'the fair maid of Kent'.

Shaolin Kung Fu refers to a traditional system which was born from Ch’an Buddhism and Chinese culture and specific to the environment of the Shaolin Temple in Songshan Mountain. Amongst the various types of Kung Fu, the Shaolin system is believed to be the founding style of all martial arts. This tradition began around 1,500 years ago. It began modestly at first with general exercises to improve the health of the Shaolin Monks and later developed into a profound tradition including barehand and weapons forms, self-defence and meditation techniques, amongst others. In addition, Shaolin Kung Fu has spread throughout the world and is widely practised today.

A well known translation of “Kung fu”/”Gong Fu” is skill or effort. This term can be applied to any craft, skill or activity, whether physical, spiritual or intellectual and it may also be used as a way of describing a certain special quality. Kung Fu also refers to martial arts and given the previous association, it is a fitting term because a martial art requires great effort and artistry, cultivated over many years training.

A battle to preserve Ukraine’s cultural identity

Ivan Honchar was a famous Ukrainian artist. During his many field expeditions to Ukrainian villages in the 1950s, he gathered a large collection of ethnographic materials and works of folk art, which surpassed the collections of many other museums at the time. In 1959, he opened the first private museum in Ukraine, based at his own house in Kyiv. Visited by intellectual dissidents and high-ranking foreign guests, it came under the eye of the totalitarian Soviet authorities, who often persecuted and harassed the museum’s visitors. The artist didn’t give up, and with the independence of Ukraine in 1991, the process began to turn the collection into a state museum, shortly before the artist’s death in 1993. In 2022, Russia’s invasion posed an immediate risk to the collections, but EU support from the House of Europe has helped to save this unique cultural heritage.
