Incredibly, there were two of these whip-poor-wills next to each other off the boardwalk. Invisible unless pointed out. Magee.

There's a message in there somewhere...

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

The Cryptic mantis (Sibylla pretiosa) is a species of mantis found in southern Africa. They grow to about 45 mm in length, and have a long and thin prothorax. The distinctively ornamented species has projections on the head, prothorax and four femurs. They live on tree bark in woodlands. (info:wikipedia)

These small clusters of hidden, venomous sea anemones were discovered in a deep, dark hole (puka) in a lava rock formation by me during reef surveys that my husband & I were conducting in Honaunau Bay, Hawaii. This species had not previously been reported on the Big Island. During our 900 hours of diving in this location, we only located this unique animal in one other spot, but due to unfavorable ocean conditions were unable to return to that location again to photograph them. Sea anemones are predatory, marine animals of the order Actiniaria.

*After discovering these hidden anemones, it took several consecutive years of scuba diving to photograph them under mostly turbid or dim light conditions. The day finally came to do our poster presentation at Western Illinois University, Annual Meetings of the Illinois State Academy of Science.

*Poster presentation can be viewed below.

This picture focuses on the reproductive act of "camouflage prayer mantises" (Majangella moultoni) of Borneo. The male (on the back of the female) is spreading sperm in the female ootheca.

Disappearing Sign: Columbia, Virginia (Virginia Dairy)

Until now, the semi-terrestically freshwater crab Nanhaipotamon hongkongense was due to lack of better distribution knowledge considered a Hong Kong endemic. During a night walk in Shenzhen, however, I found crabs resembling the phenotype of N. hongkongense, so this species is most probably distributed in the southern parts of Guangdong, as well.

Other than N. guangdongense, which was abundant and not too hard to observe at some sites in Zhuhai, I was not able to find a site where N. hongkongense was similarly abundant. The crabs tend to flee and hide in their burrows at the slightest disturbance and may therefore be more cryptic than allied species in southern China.

Of all Nanhaipotamon species, N. hongkongense is the most traded in pet markets even in Europe because of its variable and signalling red or orange colour and vivid behaviour.

Collections of wild animals may pose a threat to current populations in Hong Kong. This and a cryptic life history may be the reason why they did not seem to be as abundant as N. guangdongense.

Background - All scenes displayed in the photos of the "Small Worlds" set existed for only a brief moment in time, having been created in a corner of my kitchen. Each real world physical construction is a maximum of 2" square and was shot under only natural light utilizing long exposures.

Cryptic Terrain – We call it “cryptic” only because of the lack of easily identifiable features.

This tiny shrimp was found on the blue tunicate. The flattened shape suggests it could be a Cryptic Sponge Shrimp (Gelastocaris paronae), but as far as I'm aware G. paronae is found on sponges where its colour and patterns almost completely camouflage it. This shrimp is mostly transparent, so perhaps it's a juvenile.

Have you seen something similar or can you identify the species?

The blue effect in this case is a result of shining a blacklight at close range with standard incandescent light still present in the room. This is Alexial, my deathstalker scorpion, Leiurus quinquestriatus.

In normal light she looks like this:

You should NEVER leave a blacklight on a scorpion long-term. The intense UV rays will eventually kill the nocturnal animal. Some pet stores market scorpion habitats with blacklights because they look cool, but they don't tell you the facts.
