This Diwali, I came across several amazing types of fireworks & oil lamps.

This one is a Cryptic Diya.

As you can see from the construction. It has a slot fo lighting up a wick, but where do you pour the oil in?

Nah. Don't tell me you are going to use the same slot as the wick.

Scale Fact - The Diya height is about 4cm. Which means the Wick slot = about 3mm!

-

This diya is filled from the bottom. Turn it upside down, and there is a bigger pathway for pouring oil. Turn it back upright, some oil falls out, rest of it is in.

QED. Beautiful Cryptic Diya.

BTW - We didn't use this one. It was too beautiful to be burnt.. :p

Not the strangest thing I've seen at the pier on Pithalachocco, but pretty cool just the same!

The species in the "Nightjar" family are known for their camouflage.

This is a species that occurs in BC but is not expected to be seen in our area.

1stly we are (probably) on the very fringes of their migration range.

2ndly they are so well camouflaged that one seemingly has to flush them to notice them.

Bush crickets have some of the most incredible camouflage. It's almost unbelievable how some species, such as this one, look exactly like they are growing lichens/moss out of their back. Once they become adults and develop wings, they they take on a fresh disguise, almost perfectly mimicking leaves.

Bonefish are cryptically colored. Their mirror-like scales help them blend into their surroundings and avoid predators.

Co. L/derry, June 2024. Finally an opportunity to photography this special butterfly this year. I've seen a few fluttering around when I've been doing other things, but I managed to get close to a couple recently.

Both Wood White (L. sinapis) and Cryptic Wood White are found in Ireland, though as far as we know the former is restricted to the Burren in the west of Ireland.
